The 2009 Calpoly Design Village was themed Post-Apocolyptic where governments had collapsed and zombies invaded. Teams had 12 hours to transport their structures up a 1.5 mile dirt road and construct them in Calpoly Canyon where they would survive for two nights. The Thunderbox was a modular structure designed to safely house and sustain three occupants.

The structure was designed to be mobile and have the ability to adjust to any terrain. A transportation cart was built from structural frame to carry the load.
The butterfly roof was designed to collect rainwater and store it for later use. It also had a system of louvers that could be opened to allow light into the structure without compromising safety.
The front wall of the structure opened up and created 50% floor area.
Best Overall Award
This small boat house is located on the beach front of Skywater Lodge, a private residence in Lake Tahoe. The design/build problem was to create a structure to store 3-4 small boats. It needed to be accessed in the summer and protected from the harsh elements in the winter. There was an existing deck where the boats had been stacked in the past, which became the base for the new structure. The building was designed to blend into the hillside by mimicking the surrounding granite boulders, with its undulating roof and grey color palette.
ReConstruction Warehouse The ReConstruction warehouse is dedicated to recycling and re-using construction materials and any other object, to lessen the amount of debris that goes into our landfills. The main structure of the building is a butler beam truss system with an angled ridgeline, to symbolize a shift in ideals and the transformation of a material from old to new; from deconstruction through reconstruction. All programmatic spaces are constructed using different reclaimed materials creating independent objects within the warehouse. They also are a showcase of ideas for customers and visitors. The reconstruction warehouse is a rough and durable building, with the ability to be accessed by a truck or any other larger equipment.

N.S.A.D. Urban Campus The Urban Campus is a proposal for the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, to expand their existing infrastructure and create more of a campus feel for the students. The building would be located adjacent to the existing building and would include a central quad with an outdoor amphitheater, a student housing tower and all the amenities necessary. The structure would not only be an icon for the school but provide a platform for conversation between the city and the school.

The beds are cantilever from the building to save square footage while offering a unique experience to the user. This also optimizes valuable floor space within each dormroom, maximizing the amount of useable room each resident has without increasing square footage.

Architecture of the seam: Models
This model is an exploration of how a surface can acts as a seam; specifically one that is negotiating along a cliff face. The intensities and changes that happen start to form spaces and pathways. This study was done in section with just under 200 cuts and the gradient of change that happens between each cut, is an expression of the fluidity of the transition and continuity of the surface.
The Grid This model is an exploration of a series of seams set on a Cartesian grid. The rigidity is broken up by introducing curved lines in the z-axis. It is the depth of the seam that creates the feeling that the entire series is more curvilinear and organic; even within the confines of a static grid.
