VISION By asking our faculty staff and students to think beyond,

ERIVAN KARL HAUB Political economist, environmentalist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Friend to Saint Joseph’s University

we seek excellence in business education that offers breadth in terms of broad based coverage of business concepts and skills, depth through focus on specific industries and professions, and wholeness via education of men and women in service of others in accordance with the Ignatian tradition.

Saint Joseph’s University

Saint Joseph’s University acknowledged its treasured friendship with Erivan Karl Haub and his family through the naming of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business in 1997 and the Erivan K. Haub Executive Conference Center in 1988. For more than 30 years, Erivan K. Haub was at the helm of the TENGELMANN Group, a German-based family enterprise. After developing the company into one of the world’s largest food retailers, he handed over his position to his sons. Mr. Haub is now chairman of the board of the TENGELMANN Group of Enterprises. The TENGELMANN Group was started in 1867 when Mr. Haub’s great-grandparents, Wilhelm Schmitz and Louise nee Scholl, established a coffee- and tea-importing company which the following generations expanded into a chain of grocery stores. Under Mr. Haub’s leadership, the company has grown into an international enterprise, which operates more than 8,000 outlets and employs more than 152,000 associates. Today, the TENGELMANN Group is represented in 15 countries and comprises the grocery chains TENGELMANN and KAISER’S, the limited assortment discount stores PLUS, and the textile discount stores KiK. In addition, TENGELMANN is the majority shareholder in THE GREAT ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC TEA COMPANY, Inc. (A&P), which operates stores in the United States. Mr. Haub also is a political economist who trained extensively, both domestically and abroad, before moving to the helm of the TENGELMANN Group. He is married to Helga Haub, nee Otto. They have three sons born in Tacoma, Washington, and eight American grandchildren.

As a family, the Haubs are dedicated to the advancement of global communication, international trade, education, historic preservation, and environmental protection. Mr. Haub was honored, among others, with the first Earth Day International Award. In 2004, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award stated that in addition to his work as an entrepreneur, Mr. Haub engaged himself in an extraordinary way for humankind, for culture and for charity, but above all for the protection of the environment. The Haub family’s enduring commitment to education is demonstrated in their landmark support of Saint Joseph’s University. In 1992, Mr. Haub was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the University. Friend to students and professors alike, Erivan Karl Haub has made a dramatic impact on education at Saint Joseph’s University and the Erivan K. Haub School of Business.

O WEN A. M ANDEVILLE H ALL A decade ago, the Erivan K. Then and now, Mandeville Hall is a symbol of excellence as well as a destination for the very best in business education. Undergraduate, graduate, and executive students interact with a world-class faculty to continually think beyond traditional learning models. WALL STREET TRADING ROOM In fall 2002, Saint Joseph’s University established a customized trading room in Mandeville Hall where students obtain first-hand exposure to financial concepts such as portfolio construction, risk management, and financial engineering. This facility — designed for Saint Joseph’s by Trans-Lux Corporation and the first of its kind in the Philadelphia region — is just another example of how real-time experiential learning is incorporated at the Haub School. The room’s electronic ticker displays ongoing, real-time market activity and stock prices, while a tri-color board provides students with current financial information and graphics. Computers in the trading room are equipped with software packages including MetaStock Professional, Research Insight, and Crystal Ball, providing students with the most realistic trading experiences possible before they join the high-tech, fast-paced corporate environment. Students use both current and historical information in the classroom; the same information is used by portfolio managers in their day-to-day business. This technology ensures an effortless transition between the academic world and the professional work place.

The Erivan K. Haub School of Business established the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics as the result of a private alumni gift in fall 2004. The Center integrates ethics into the Haub School’s teaching and research agendas through various programs including a speaker series, faculty workshops, a biennial conference, student retreats and immersion experiences, as well as an annual national survey. A critical differentiation point between traditional business education and the Saint Joseph’s University experience is this ethical dimension. The Arrupe Center supports and enhances this dimension in both theory and practice.

Erivan K. Haub School of Business

The Erivan K. Haub School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This is the highest accreditation possible for business schools around the world. The Haub School is also home to the silver chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the AACSB honor society recognizing superior achievement in business education by both faculty and students. At the University level, Saint Joseph’s has earned many additional accolades for its outstanding graduate and undergraduate programs. When Saint Joseph’s was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter in October 2000, it became one of only three schools in the Philadelphia metropolitan area – and among just nine of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities nationwide – to earn both Phi Beta Kappa and AACSB endorsements. It is this academic excellence that continues to earn some of the highest rankings for Saint Joseph’s University. U .S.N ew s & W orld R eportrepeatedly ranks Saint Joseph’s among “America’s Best Colleges,” and the University consistently places in the Top 10 of its category: Regional Universities/North. In addition, Barron’s Profiles of A m erican C olleges rates Saint Joseph’s “very competitive” among colleges and universities nationwide. Saint Joseph’s has also received the highest possible accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The University is a member of the American Council on Education, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the National Catholic Educational Association, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities, the American Library Association, the Association of Liberal Arts Colleges of Pennsylvania for the Advancement of Teaching, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Middle Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration. In the specific area of part-time professional business education, the Haub School has been ranked by U .S.N ew s & W orld R eportamong the Top 25 programs in the nation for the fourth time.

HAUB SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ENDOWED CHAIRS The Haub School of Business houses three endowed chairs — the Brian Duperreault Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, the Sutula Chair in Accounting, and the C.J. McNutt Chair in Food Marketing. In 2004, the Brian Duperreault Chair for Risk Management and Insurance was established within the Department of Finance. Duperreault ‘69 is former chairman of ACE Limited, a Bermuda-based insurance company and global leader in insurance and reinsurance. He also is a member of the University’s board of trustees. The chair recognizes Duperreault for the values, commitment, outstanding leadership, and service he has demonstrated throughout his accomplished career. The Edward G. Sutula Chair in Accounting was dedicated in honor of Dr. Sutula, former chair of the Department of Accounting, by alumni. The Sutula chair, the first Saint Joseph’s chair established, is a tribute to his commitment to students and his profession as a 40-year veteran teacher and CPA. The chair supports the Haub School’s vision of excellence in business education and assists in recruitment, leadership, and teaching through relationships with public accounting firms, government, and private industry. The C.J. McNutt Chair in Food Marketing was established in 1984. McNutt was a longtime president of Campbell Sales Company. The chair recognizes a career distinguished by individual excellence and high achievement in the food industry. It was established to bring a qualified and accomplished research professional, with a strong food orientation, to lead the research effort and serve as a mentor to faculty members within the department.

FACULTY E XPERTS The primary commitment of faculty in the Haub School of Business is to help students learn to think beyond their own expectations. To this end, every faculty member is expected to contribute to the academic environment through effective teaching, active student advising, service to the University, and intellectual contributions that reach a wider audience. So, while the individual expertise of Haub School faculty manifests itself primarily in the classroom, many are national and international spokespersons on a wide range of critical issues. Students are the ultimate beneficiaries of this world-class collection of scholars and real-life practitioners. At Saint Joseph’s you won’t just hear about these professors, you’ll experience them first-hand.

Nancy M. Childs, Ph.D.

Dr. Childs is an expert on U.S. and international food businesses and food label policy, and on the increase in obesity in the United States. “Food labeling will accelerate in importance for consumers as more companies claim health benefits in their products, because we’re so desperate to fight the obesity trend and the chronic diseases of aging,” she notes.

Thani Jambulingam, Ph.D.

Dr. Jambulingam studies the pharmaceutical industry within the broader context of the entire healthcare system and maintains that the industry has a vital role to play in the delivery of better, more efficient, affordable, and safer care. “Each year, 1.5 million people are affected by medical errors. Efforts currently being made to fix this problem carry a $6-7 billion price tag. Pharma has to take an active role in providing information to patients.”

Saint Joseph’s University

John J. McCall, Ph.D. As director of the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics, Dr. McCall focuses on mentoring Erivan K. Haub School of Business faculty in the Center’s Fellows Program so that students are assured of substantive and repeated exposure to questions of ethics in the classroom. “Students need to have a serial exposure to business ethics. This is not an issue to be covered in the last chapter of the textbook.”

W. Richard Sherman, LL.M., CPA

Dr. Sherman serves as site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, overseeing students as they help elderly and low- to middle-income residents of the neighboring community prepare their tax returns each year. He has also been honored with the IRS’s outstanding achievement award for his work with the SJU program, the largest university-based VITA site in the region.

Michael R. Solomon, Ph.D. An authority on consumer behavior and the marketplace, Dr. Solomon studies the complex relationship between marketing strategies and consumers’ preferences for everything from fashion and the foods on their supermarket shelves, to the sofas in their living rooms and the music they download on their iPods. “Brands, like people, have personalities,” says Dr. Solomon, whose research interests include lifestyle issues; branding strategy; the psychology of fashion, decoration, and image; avatars and e-commerce; and the symbolic aspects of products.

I am a physician by training, and I chose to come to Saint Joseph’s largely because I wanted to broaden my knowledge of business. In addition to the business education that I received, my most rewarding experience at Saint Joseph’s came from a lesson learned in class — that there is a conscience to the work that we do. We not only need to believe it, we need to live and lead it. That is one of the challenges we face coming out of this program — to be true leaders of business with an ethical approach to what we do.”

The Saint Joseph’s EMBA program has exposed me to business professionals from diverse backgrounds and industries. This exposure has given me the opportunity to enhance my analytical thinking, emotional intelligence and leadership skills. The challenging curriculum has provided me with the newest innovative business concepts while emphasizing the importance of ethics, values and serving others.” Karen Baptiste Trade Promotions Manager Johnson & Johnson Sales & Logistics Company

I have personally financed every dollar for my higher education at Saint Joseph’s and it appears to already have a positive ‘net present value.’ I am actively incorporating the knowledge that I have gained into my everyday business life. The Executive MBA program has kept me focused and made me realize my full potential. I currently am sitting with two offer letters on my desk, which would not be there without the experience I have had at Saint Joseph’s University.” Brian Canna Sales Engineer DCI Bio LaFitte

OUR PHILOSOPHY Students learn from an experienced departmental faculty, sharpen their business intelligence by developing technical and analytical skills, and seek purpose by making valuable contributions in their workplace and beyond.

I have been successful throughout my career due to my dual skill set of business and technical capabilities. When I decided to further my education with a graduate degree, I searched for a program that would provide formal education in both arenas. The MS in BI (DSS) provides such a dual focus. Technical courses are taught with an eye toward how business can utilize the technology, while the business concentration courses enable students to enhance their knowledge of a specific business area. I know that the knowledge that I have gained from the program will help me in my quest for continued advancement in the future. I would recommend this program to anyone who is seeking to develop or refine their skills in the realm of business technology.” Brian Brown Associate Director, Logistics and Analytics Cephalon Inc.

TWO EXCITING FORMATS The MSBI program is available in two formats. In addition to our on-campus program, we also offer the MSBI program in an on-line delivery mode. You can learn more about the on-line format by visiting w w w .

The M.S. in Business Intelligence program is ideal for professionals in business functional areas such as marketing, accounting, and finance who are faced with mountains of data and important strategic and tactical business decisions. Our program will give these professionals the tools to ask the right questions and navigate through data toward the appropriate answers. For undergraduates with an interest in technology and a focus on using that technology to solve business problems, this program will give them a path toward more lucrative and challenging business opportunities.” Ira Yermish, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Decision & System Sciences Saint Joseph’s University

I was lucky to find all these at Saint Joseph’s University. To gain a competitive edge in the workplace I decided to sharpen my skills in the field of finance. What attracted me to the new M.S. in Financial Services was the opportunity to concentrate my studies in the field of finance. I am so pleased with the course offerings and level of knowledge the professors bring to the classroom.” Peter Sciortino Vice President Wachovia Securities, LLC.

The M.S. in Financial Services Program provided me with the foundation of knowledge to successfully sit for the CFP® exam. The program has set me up to be a successful leader within the financial services industry. One of the reasons I chose to pursue a degree at Saint Joseph’s and a career at The Vanguard Group is that both institutions hold values and ethics in the highest regards.” Derek Reinhold Supervisor, High Net Worth Services The Vanguard Group
