OUR PROUD SPONSORS

FROM THE EDITOR G’day and welcome to JCU Dentistry! Congratulations on getting an offer to study at this great facility! You’ve all worked hard to get to this point, but the hard work doesn’t stop here! I know that all of you are excited to sink your teeth into this course and experience the university life here at JCU. The first few months can be overwhelming and it might take a while to get used to. For most of you, it’s your first time at university while for others it’s your first time away from home, whether that be 1hr away or 14hrs, 3 long flights and a 25 minute drive to the airport. This booklet is designed to help break the ice for those new to Cairns and Australia. It is a guide to help you learn about the essentials - the location of shopping centres, activities to do in your precious time off, as well as the many attractions that are best suited to the student budget. As dentistry students, we use many parts of the Cairns campus to attend lectures, practicals and tutorials. As such, we have included a copy of the campus map to help you navigate your way around. There are also some previous student insights into what it’s like living at the Cairns Student Lodge! If you need any more information, remember you can always ask your mentor (assigned to you on the first day of O-week), your home group coordinators (who you’ll meet in the first week of uni), your first year experience coordinator as well as the dentistry administration team. Keep in touch and remember that they are there to provide you with assistance, moral and social support in times of need. Congratulations again and brace yourself for the fun filled years ahead! All the best for your 2018.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Congratulations on making it into JCU Dentistry! Before you head off to knuckle-down and study hard, it’s important to establish and maintain a healthy work-life balance while you’re in University and that’s where we, the JCU Dental Student Association (JCUDSA), come into the picture. Since 2009, our student-led organisation has aimed to develop a strong sense of culture within the dentistry community by enriching the student experience. JCUDSA works hard to deliver a long list of sought-after, unmissable activities for our members so you’re definitely in for a treat! There are social and sports events to enjoy, community and charity initiatives to join, an opportunity to party-hard during our much-anticipated annual Dental Ball, and much more. We also focus on the academic side of dentistry and provide support through class representatives, guest lecturers and even help with exam preparation! Importantly, we recommend that you sign up for a JCUDSA Gold membership to take advantage of VIP discounts with local businesses that we have teamed up with as well as our exclusive events and merchandise – it’s worth it! We are also always on the lookout for enthusiastic people to join the committee so keep an eye out for opportunities to come if you would like to get involved! Finally, we hope this booklet will help you to kick-start your journey and enjoy the next few years at JCU. We’re all so excited to welcome you to our family, so don’t be shy and come join us at the JCUDSA O’week festivities!

LIFE IN THE TROPICS Whether you’re travelling from interstate or internationally, you know you have reached Cairns once the humid weather drains your body’s sebaceous glands from every bit of content it holds. But seriously guys, don't forget to stock up on insect repellent as you'll become a magnet for mosquitoes in no time!  However, it is without a doubt that your time here will be filled with new experiences and friends along the way! This region is also well-known for many things including rainforests, mountain bike events, scuba diving and snorkelling around the Great Barrier Reef.

CRUISING AROUND CAMPUS Whether you are feeling homesick or stressed from the dentistry workload, you can always depend on JCU services for student support. Academic advice can be given through the Student Mentor Program and Learning Advisors in the library. Further, on-site professionally trained psychologists are available with drop-in sessions daily. There are also many student societies and clubs to join, from our very own JCU Dental Student Association to the Rural Health in the Northern Outback (RHINO). For the fitness fanatics, there is a gym on campus and membership can be purchased at the JCU Student Association office. We’ve also got sporting teams, Zumba and Pilates sessions (visit the JCU website to learn more). Our campus also features an impressive three-story library, several 24hr computer labs, a café and licensed bar, and a sporting oval and basketball court.

LIVING IN STUDENT ACCOMODATION   Life at the Cairns Student Lodge is unlike any other University accommodation! There is definitely a strong sense of belonging and, best of all, meals and utilities are completely catered for. It is also a stone’s throw to JCU and the Campus Shopping Village. Further, the Lodge Event Hub organises trips, events, and career and life skills workshops too. To ensure all students feel safe and secure, there is a friendly and dedicated team of Residential Leaders (RLs)! The team comprises of mostly second and third year dental students who can help you feel more at home and provide pastoral care. Overall, the lodge is a brilliant place to meet new people.  Other than the Cairns Student Lodge, there are other accommodation options available. The Beaches Luxury apartments are located directly across from JCU, and there is the new John Grey Hall of Residence located on campus. Many students also live in share houses in surrounding suburbs.

SMITHFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE Located approximately 2km from campus, the Smithfield Shopping Centre is just a short ride away from all of your food, clothing and lifestyle needs. Here, you can find major supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths, and Kmart. There is also an Event Cinemas nearby and if you show your JCU student ID card on Mondays you can snag yourself a discount! Recently, the shopping complex underwent major renovations and this brought with it the arrival of many new restaurants and dining options including Burger Urge, Sushi Train, Burrito Bar, Lone Star Rib House, Subway and Pho Pho Vietnamese Street Food!

TOP CLUBS & BARS It’s important to maintain a healthy work-life balance and this fact is no exception for JCU dental students. Nightlife in Cairns is quite dynamic, so it's not uncommon to find your fellow peers having a fun study break at one of Cairns' many  sought-after bars and clubs.  Salt house: Be amazed by the beautiful views of the water and city lights. There are two bars, live music on weekends, a restaurant and heaps of space to sit, catch-up with friends and relax over fancy cocktails. Gilligans/The Attic: Best known by the locals as “Gillies,” this attraction is a backpacker’s paradise. You can find an eclectic mix of people who come together to party in the biggest night club in Cairns! It’s open every night of the week and contains both inside and outside catered areas.

THE CAIRNS ESPLANADE Located just 20 minutes driving distance from the JCU campus, the Esplanade is one of Cairns' best known landmarks. As a hub for local and international visitors, it's the perfect place to go to if you're looking for a beautiful view, an early morning jog or even a nice dinner along the water. Here, you will also find the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon which is a perfect place to spend time soaking up the sun whilst enjoying a dip in the water and viewing the beautiful Trinity Inlet and mountains that line the horizon. Additionally, many restaurants and coffee shops are only a small walk away and there are communal BBQ areas surrounding park grounds under the luscious, leafy trees. Similarly, there are many forms of all exercise equipment dotted throughout the parks and esplanade boardwalk. If you venture out for a short, relaxing stroll north along the beachfront boardwalk you will find yourself passing by Muddy’s playground, a highly populated Skatepark and a beach volleyball court.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS Rusty’s Markets : A well-known tourist icon that features a cluster of stalls offering a range of fresh produce including seafood, coffee, florists, tropical wines, massage, bric-a-brac, Cecil’s Rice and Spice, second hand goods and much more. There’s also a range of food joints with live music on weekends to keep you entertained for hours. It’s a great way to kill time on a weekend and get the first pick of many first produce.

Kuranda : If you’re keen for a little escape away from the hustle and bustle of

Cairns, a trip to Kuranda is the way to go! It is a great place to explore as it is surrounded by a World Heritage Listed Rainforest and has a village of its own (Kuranda Village) which houses markets, cafes and bars as well as accommodation and camping. Nature sights that can be seen on this trip include Barron Fall, many wildlife zoos (venomous animals, bats, birds, butterflies, etc.), and the Wildlife Safari Reserve and a Koala Garden. Fur, the Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway are offered and are great ways to experience the beauty of the tropical rainforest.

Cairns Night Markets : Offering a wide array of tourist and souvenir shopping, the

Nightmarkets are a great place to go for desserts, cheap massages and much more!

Waterfalls : For those of you who like swimming or just dipping your feet in the

water and appreciating the scenery around you, be sure to visit the many waterfalls of Cairns! They are great places to go with a group of friends to socialize and enjoy some sausage sizzles! Some include Crystal Cascades, Behana Gorge, Millaa Millaa, Crystal Cascades, Emerald Creek, Josephine Falls.

SHOPPING & LIFESTYLE Cairns Central:

1-21 McLeod st, Cains, QLD 4870. The biggest shopping centre in Cairns, offering over 180 stores including Myer, Target, Coles, JB Hi-Fi, and Event Cinemas. TRANSPORT METHODS Walking

If you live at either the Beaches Luxury Apartments, the Cairns Student Lodge or the JCU on-campus student accommodation, then walking is more than a viable option (might just be a little rough during the summer days)! The Beaches Luxury Apartments is about a 5-7 minute walk from campus, while the Cairns Student Lodge is about 10 minutes walking distance. Keep in mind that we do live in the tropics so you'll have to bare the humidity and unpredictable downpour of rain. Make sure to have an umbrella on you at all times, especially during wet season!

Bus (public transit)

Sunbus offers various buses with routes leading to the northern beaches, Cairns central, and Cairns city to name the least. Pro tip: present your student ID card with your student concession s at the time of ticket purchasing. Popular buses: 110 – Taking this bus from the JCU bus stop will lead you to Smithfield shopping centre, Cairns Central, Cairns city (your stop to get to the clubs), Cairns City, Cairns Central, and. If you take this bus the opposite way up north it will lead you to some of the northern beaches such as Trinity Beach, Palm Cove, and Clifton beach. 111 – similar to 110

Driving

While purchasing a car is not entirely necessary in Cairns, it does make things easier as many places in Cairns such as the super markets, fitness classes, shopping centres, restaurants and beaches are not within walking distance. Alternatively, public transportation, taking a taxi, or ordering an uber (more friendly to the student budget compared to taking a taxi) are also reasonable options.
