endicott college women’s basketball

2010-11 winter preview The 2010-11 women’s basketball team will look to a pair of seniors in hopes of raising the program’s first The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) championship banner. Senior guard Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) and senior forward Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, Mass.), both Third Team All-TCCC selections last season, will be relied upon to offset the loss of last year’s TCCC Co-Player of the Year Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, Mass.) to graduation. With a new head coach and a strong recruiting class, the Gulls hope to turn last season’s 19-8 record into a banner year in 2010-11. Cecelia DeMarco begins her first year as head coach of the Gulls. The Boston native brings a wealth of experience at every level of the game. This year’s squad welcomes six new freshmen to a balanced roster that will test itself early with the Endicott Tip-off, a two-day tournament in November that features Lyndon State, Newbury, and Wesleyan. Vitale returns after a successful junior season that culminated in season-ending conference honors. The forward was a presence in the paint on both sides of the floor, leading the team in blocks (39) and finishing third in scoring at 10.8 points per game. Classmate Brittany Kelleher (Wakefield, Mass.) was one of only four players to see action in all 27 games last year. Look for the senior forward to continue to contribute on the glass, where she grabbed 104 rebounds as a junior. Wright returns for her final season in Blue and Green as the team’s top all-around player. The guard led the Gulls in three-point shooting and was second on the team at 14.5 points per game. Her ability to distribute

the ball was evidenced by 81 assists. Wright grabbed 105 rebounds and was ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III with 3.7 steals per game. Sophomore guard Jen McBrien (Medfield, Mass.) and junior guard Kate Kovach (Moon Township, Pa.) will provide game-tested support in the backcourt. McBrien, last year’s top reserve who played in all 27 games, will see an increased role this season after the graduation of starting guard Kaylin Burke (Leominster, Mass.). Kovach started in 25 games last season and finished second on the team with 33 three-point field goals. Junior guard Nicole Heffernan (Londonberry, N.H.) returns after shooting 47% from the field last season while senior forward Catie Cullen (Beverly, Mass.) looks to provide veteran leadership in her final season. Six freshman will look to make an immediate impact in their first year at Endicott. Sam Crough (Cohasset, Mass.) will be one of the first players off the bench, and at 5’11, can play any position on the floor. First year guards Ashley Walenta (Plainville, Conn.) and Heather Moody (Dunstable, Mass.) provide depth in the backcourt while Jordan Ferland (Charlestown, N.H.), Jenn White (Lisbon, N.H.), and Julie Manning (Hull, Mass.) will all compete for minutes up front. The Gulls open the season with ten non-conference games, including six at home where they went 13-3 last year, before tackling conference competition. Endicott finished 11-2 in the conference in 2009 and fell to Regis in the semifinals of the TCCC Tournament as the number two seed.

Cecelia DeMarco - Head Coach

Cecelia DeMarco has been announced as the new head coach for the Gulls women’s basketball program. DeMarco becomes the seventh head coach in program history and takes over a team that went 19-8 (11-2 TCCC) and reached the conference semifinals last season. DeMarco brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the department and is a proven builder of basketball programs. A Boston native, who started her coaching career in 1973 as the head coach of the Bishop Fenwick women’s basketball team, DeMarco comes to Endicott with over 35 years of coaching, teaching, and administrative experience across a variety of levels. A large portion of DeMarco’s coaching success has been at the NCAA Division I level with a nine-year head coaching stint at the University of New Hampshire, where she led the Wildcats to winning records in seven of those nine seasons. DeMarco’s squads amassed two conference championships and qualified for post-season and regional conference championships for nine consecutive seasons. She was selected as the Converse District Coach of theYear in 1983 and in 1987, UNH promoted her to Associate Athletic Director. After a two year period as Athletic Director at Bridgewater State College, DeMarco moved on to Yale University, where she began another successful run as head coach of the Bulldogs women’s basketball team in 1990. In fact, her leadership catapulted the program from a last place standing to a third place finish in the competitive Ivy League. By the end of her tenure at Yale in 1999, DeMarco became the all-time coaching wins leader in Yale women’s basketball history. DeMarco returned to coaching in 2007 and took the helm of the NCAA Division III MIT Engineers where she led the team to a 12-win season, their highest total in over 10 seasons. The team qualified for the NEWMAC playoffs for the second time in program history. Most recently from 2009-2010, DeMarco served as an assistant coach for the University of Massachusetts Amherst women’s basketball team and held a variety of responsibilities. DeMarco graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. She later earned her Master Degree in Physical Education from Washington State University in 1977. She has been named to the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame, the Bridgewater State Hall of Fame, and been given the Bridgewater State Outstanding Alumni Award. “I am thrilled to be joining the Endicott Athletic Department,” said DeMarco. “The enthusiasm for athletics is evident from the players to the President, and that enthusiasm is contagious.”
