2011 spring preview Once again favored in the preseason The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) coaches poll, the 2011 softball team features eight freshmen who will be expected to contribute immediately. The Gulls, winners of eight straight conference championships, hope a trio of seniors can help make good on the preseason prediction and secure their ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance. Head coach Mark Veilleux enters his 17th season at the helm and will have to rely on a number of underclassmen to replace the loss of four talented players to graduation. Second baseman Sarah Spaziano (Norton, Mass.), shortstop Jenna Lazar (Milton, Mass.), third baseman Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass.), and outfielder Megan Downey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) were each named all-conference in their senior seasons. Endicott’s success in 2011 could depend on how quickly a young but talented group of underclassmen can fill the void. Reigning TCCC Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-TCCC selection Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) returns for her senior season as the Gulls’ top starter. A four-time conference pitcher of the week last year, Bortolotti was 20-7 with a 1.84 ERA in 24 starts. The pitching rotation benefits from added depth with sophomore Kayla Carignan (Laconia, N.H.) and three freshmen who will help shoulder the load of a 38-game regular season schedule. Carignan was a two-time conference pitcher of the week and went 8-4 in her inaugural season. Jennie Lacolla (Stoneham, Mass.), Danielle LaRocque (Averill Park, N.Y.), and Nell O’Connor (Harwich, Mass.) will all compete for time in the circle. Along with Bortolotti, senior co-captains Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) and Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.) will have to provide leadership and experience on and off the field. Wright spent the past three years playing centerfield but is likely to transition to shortstop to solidify the middle of the infield. Offensively, she led the

team with seven home runs and 26 RBIs as a junior. Freshman Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.) will see time immediately in centerfield as she looks to fill the gap left by Wright’s move. Hovhanessian will return in left field after starting 38 games last year. She hit .320 as a junior and was tied for second on the team with 21 RBIs. Sophomore Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.), who saw action in 32 games including 20 starts as a freshman, assumes right field duties. Three underclassmen will compete for time at catcher. Last year’s TCCC Rookie of the Year Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) earned Second Team All-TCCC accolades and was impressive on both sides of the plate, hitting .315 and registering a .985 fielding percentage. Sophomore Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and freshman Alli Noyes (Tewksbury, Mass.) have emerged as viable options at the position as well. Sophomore Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) returns to first base after a stellar freshman campaign in which she had a .377 batting average and a .623 slugging percentage en route to Honorable Mention All-TCCC honors. With the loss of Spaziano, second base is an open race between sophomore Katelyn Soja (Chicopee, Mass.), freshman Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) and freshman Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.). Sophomore Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) played 23 games last season and will vie with freshman Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass.) for time at third base. The 2011 schedule kicks off with 10 games in five days in Kissimmee, Florida. When the Gulls return, they will quickly embark on their conference slate with road games at Anna Maria and Regis. Endicott’s first home game of the year comes in the form of a TCCC Championship rematch against Western New England on March 27.

Mark Veilleux - Head Coach

Endicott’s record holder for career wins and longest tenured head coach begins his 17th season leading the softball team. Since Veilleux’s arrival, the softball program has won 11 conference championships, including the last eight, and made eight NCAA tournament appearances. A three-time Coach of the Year (GNAC in 1999, CCC in 2002, TCCC in 2008), Veilleux boasts a 448-166-10 record. During his time, the Gulls have averaged 28 wins per year, highlighted by a school-record 41 in 2008 which culminated in a trip to the NCAA Regional Finals. Veilleux took over the program in 1995, just one year after it began competing in NCAA Division III. In his first year he led the Gulls to an 18-4 overall record and finished undefeated in the NEWMAC en route to the program’s first conference championship. Endicott won back-to-back conference titles in 1998-99 as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). In 2002, The Blue and Green raised their fourth banner after finishing 21-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. That season and each since has resulted in a conference championship and NCAA tournament berth. Individual and team success have come hand-in-hand under Veilleux. During his tenure, the Gulls have showcased six conference pitchers of the year, five conference players of the year, six conference rookies of the year, and 57 allconference selections. Additionally, 25 players have been named to the NFCA All-Region team and one – Robyn Savitske – has earned All-America status. Coach Veilleux has served on the NCAA Division III Regional Selection Committee and the NFCA Division III All-Region Committee. Veilleux is a lifelong resident of Danvers, Mass. where he currently lives with his wife, Judy. He has two children, Amy and Mark.

Mark Kulakowski - Assistant Coach

meet the coaches

Mark Kulakowski is in his ninth year as an assistant for both the Endicott football and softball teams. Coach Kulakowski is the Gulls’ Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line coach in the fall, while he spends the spring working with the outfielders on the Endicott softball team. In eight spring seasons with the softball program, Coach Kulakowski has helped Head Coach Mark Veilleux make eight trips the NCAA Tournament, as well as win The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship each year. Head football coach, JB Wells, and Kulakowski helped get the football program up and running in 2002 and has offered his coaching expertise to the running backs, special teams, and defensive line since then. A graduate and four-year athlete at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Kulakowski was the captain and Most Valuable Player of the Corsairs’ football team in 2001. Kulakowski holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from UMass Dartmouth. He also received his Master’s degree in education from Endicott in 2005. Coach Kulakowski is also the head softball coach of the Bay State Northeast Summer Team. In the past five years, his teams have won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the games. This past summer’s team won gold after losing just one tournament game. In 2007 and 2008, Kulakowski served as the MIAA North Sectional Softball Tournament Director. Coach Kulakowski also teaches private softball lessons and coaches at Strike One in Danvers, Mass. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Coach Kulakowski works as the Athletic Facilities Director. He currently resides in Danvers, Mass. with his wife Katy.

Laura Carlson - Assistant Coach

Laura Carlson enters her fifth season as an assistant with the Endicott softball team, working primarily with the pitching staff. She brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate level. In high school, Carlson was a three-time state champion at Bishop Fenwick High School. She went on to star on the soccer and softball teams at Merrimack College where she was named second team All-American in both sports. In softball Carlson hit third and played right field, helping guide the Warriors to the 1994 NCAA Division II National Championship. She currently ranks fifth in career runs scored at Merrimack. Carlson went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Salem State College. Her coaching career includes stints as the head soccer and softball coach at Pine Manor College (Boston) and Bishop Fenwick. Currently, she works as a guidance counselor at Gloucester High School.
