2009 fall preview Before the start of the 2008 women’s tennis season, head coach Gale Bacon and the Gulls entered the MacDonald Gymnasium and noticed that of all the banners hanging in the rafters, there was one significant omission: a TCCC Women’s Tennis Championship. Having the goal of the program’s first banner in mind, the Gulls went out and accomplished that very objective, winning the 2008 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship with a 5-2 victory over Colby-Sawyer College. The Gulls then moved on to the NCAA Tournament where the team ran into a tough Wellesley College opponent. Endicott looks forward to defending the program’s first TCCC title in the upcoming 2009 season by returning four of its six major contributors from the 2008 squad. Fifth year head coach Gale Bacon

including First-Team honors in number one singles and doubles. The Gulls will have four seniors returning in 2009, all of whom had terrific junior campaigns. Nicole Breting (Johnston, R.I.) looks to match an extremely successful year, as the senior went 11-4 in number two singles last year and 12-4 overall in singles matches. Her doubles partner, Lori Wardner (Wrentham, Mass.), also had a strong 2008 as the duo combined to go 12-5 in number one doubles last season while Wardner was an impressive 14-1 in number three singles and 16-1 overall. Alyson Boehm (Lowell, Mass.) returns in 2009 after going 12-4 in number one singles and 2-0 in number three singles a year ago. Boehm was also a crucial part of the doubles teams as she went 16-2 overall in numbers two and three doubles. Finally, Rachel Layton

in wins (59) and a 72.8% winning percentage. Bacon coached six players to All-TCCC honors in 2008,

The Gulls listed four freshmen on their roster in 2008, and none was more vital to their success than

now sophomore Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.). In her first year of competition, Cioffi took the number one singles job by storm and went 14-2 overall while garnishing First-Team All-TCCC honors. Cioffi also teamed up with Alyson Boehm to go 15-2 in number two doubles and 16-2 overall in doubles play. Fellow classmates Emily Annis (Hampton, N.H.), Kristen DiFillippo (Lynnfield, Mass.), and Kerri Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) will all look to make contributions to the 2009 team, as well. Freshmen Laura MacLeod (Mashpee, Mass.), Molly Scannell (Cheshire, Conn.), Ashley Sullivan (Concord, N.H.) and local product Gina Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.) all look to add depth to the team’s pursuit of their second-consecutive TCCC crown.

Gale Bacon

meet the coach

Head Coach Gale Bacon enters her sixth season at the helm of the Endicott women’s tennis team. In 2008, the Gulls played in their secondconsecutive The Commonwealth Coast Conference Final having lost the previous year to Roger Williams. The Gulls faced off against Colby-Sawyer in the 2008 Finals and made history as the team captured its first ever TCCC Championship by downing the Chargers, 5-2. Endicott moved onto its first women’s tennis NCAA appearance where the Gulls squared-of with Wellesley College. For her efforts, Gale was named the 2008 United States Professional Tennis Association’s New England Coach of the Year. The Gulls enjoyed their most successful season ever as Endicott finished its season at 16-2 overall and a 9-1 record in TCCC contests.

Before taking over at Endicott, Gale was the tennis coach at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School for 12 years and then was an assistant coach at Salem State College for the following three years. When Endicott began its search for a women’s tennis head coach, Coach Bacon knew it was something she would love to do. While working at Endicott, Coach Bacon has been coaching and teaching tennis at the Manchester Athletic Club for over seven year.
