endicott college cross country

2009 fall preview The Endicott College cross country teams look to continue its march to the top of the standings in 2009, as head coach Sharyn Longo spent the summer recruiting a strong running class to help for 2009 and beyond. The Gulls finished last season with a second place finish for the women and a sixth place finish for the men. The squads will look to improve on those placements, as the men will receive guidance from its seasoned runners and the women will rely on an influx of youth. During the 2008 season, the men’s team had TCCC Rookie of the Week three times and Runner of the Week two times, while the women’s team received Runner of the Week two times and one Rookie of the Week award. One week, the Gulls’ men and women garnered all four conference honors with each team getting both Rookie and Runner of the Week. Endicott’s women’s team returns six of its ten runners from last season including a pair of seniors in Lynne Gallagher (Lowell, Mass.) and Megan McGraw (Georgia, Vt.). Gallagher helped the Gulls with an average time of 22:30 in her races and had an average finish of 51st in eight races. McGraw was also a strong contributor as the now senior had an average finish of 45th while also having five top-10 finishes in 2008. McGraw raced to a first place finish in the Pilgrim Pride race with a time of 21:12. The junior class also has a pair of members on the team as Sarah James (Pawtucket, R.I.) returns to the Gulls. James did not see the course last season but looks to hit the trails hard in 2009. Junior Emily Calkins (Southport, Conn.) joins the

team for her first season and will attempt to be an integral part of the squad. Sophomore Brittaney Plante (Nashua, N.H.) headlines the class of 2012 as she ran extremely well for the Gulls a year ago. In ten meets, Plante had an average finish of 41st out of 143 runners. Joining her on the trails are returnees Kelly Cameron (Barrington, R.I.) and Deanna Slobin (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Cameron’s 2008 season was highlighted by a fifth place finish in the Pilgrim Pride race while the sophomore also finished 19th out of 108 runners at the TCCC Championships held near the end of the season. Deanna Slobin had a pair of top-20 finishes including a 17th place finish at the Gordon Invitational and just missing out on the top-10 with her 11th place finish at the Pilgrim Pride race. Another pair of sophomores join the team as first year runners Rachel Moreau (Tolland, Conn.) and Katie Trifilo (Pepperell, Mass.) will try to contribute in their first collegiate seasons. The freshman class is well-represented on the 2009 women’s cross country team as Sharyn Longo added six freshmen to the mix for this year. The freshman class comes from all over New England including three runners that hail from Connecticut including Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.), Kim Shepherd (Essex, Conn.) and Erin Sturgeon (Salem, Conn.). Joining those runners from the Constitution State are Jennifer Dickerson (Windham, N.H.), Monica Gardner (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Olivia Spinale (Attleboro, Mass.).

On the men’s side, the Gulls return seven of 10 runners from last season. Endicott will be led by a trio of four-year runners in Mike DelVecchio (Westford, Mass.), David Le (Marblehead, Mass.) and Sam Turner (Portland, Maine). Turner had a good 2008 including a 9th place finish at the Pilgrim Pride race while DelVecchio and Le will look to add depth and leadership to the team. The junior class also has three team members highlighted by Michael Macisso (Portland, Maine), Brendan Mitchell (Chelmsford, Mass.) and James Perkins (Biddeford, Maine). Macisso had a pair of top-20 finishes last season while Brendan Mitchell added three of his own including an 8th place finish at the Pilgrim Pride. Perkins will look to build off four top-50 finishes out of 10 races from a season ago. In 2008, the Gulls were led by sophomore Greg Payne (North Attleboro, Mass.), who was the top finisher for the Gulls in every race. Payne had a pair of wins at the Gordon

Sharyn Longo

Invitational and Pilgrim Pride while having seven top-20 finishes overall. A pair of first year runners Alex Dinola (Westford, Mass.) and Tom Rofrano (Sayville, N.Y.) also join Payne from the class of 2012 to help the Gulls get to the top of The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

The Endicott men’s and women’s teams begin their third season with head coach Sharyn Longo. Longo has given the program a resurgence the past two years, with the level of competition, team commitment and recruiting efforts all rising to combine for team success.

The Gulls will run for their first-ever TCCC Invitational win when Endicott hits the trails on Halloween and follow that up with the ECAC Invitational the week after on November 7, 2009.
