Mission Statement

JCC Rockland is dedicated to the enrichment and continuity of Jewish Life and to the preservation and celebration of our rich heritage. The center shall strengthen individual awareness and connection to the Jewish Community, the state of Israel, and the community at large through recreational, physical, education, social, and cultural programs.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

December, 2018 Tonight’s fundraiser, “We Are Rockland,” is much more than just a fundraiser. It is a celebration of “community.” The JCC has made an effort to be here for everyone in the community. For example: We support fellow non-profits to feed the hungry like Catholic Charities, People to People, and Rockland Jewish Family Service…. We coordinate and compete in events like Dodgeball with diverse organizations like Rockland County Pride Center, The Islamic Center of Rockland, and the Gaelic Athletic Association….. We are here for working parents with our full day Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center serving more than 100 children daily……

We provide financial assistance to families who can’t afford our programs….and

The JCC’s doors are wide open to the entire community, from newborns to those 100 years old or older, regardless of their backgrounds. Our honorees this year represent community members of diverse backgrounds. Each of them has made an extremely positive impact on life in our Rockland Community. You can read the bios of Steve Gold, Dr. Karen Tesik, Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski in the journal. We also honor the Jewish Community Campus which is home to not only the JCC but also Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland, Rockland Jewish Family Service, the local office of Israel Bonds, and The Epilepsy Society. December 1st is the last day of the 10th year since the Campus opened its doors in West Nyack. It has grown to become a true central meeting place for the Jewish and greater Rockland community. The Campus is home to events like the community vigil after the shooting in Pittsburgh, which was planned under the leadership of Jewish Federation and Foundation, and was held in the Eisenkraft Gymnasium, where more than 1,200 people were in attendance. Thank you to all of our hosts of house parties, our honorees, attendees, donors, hard working staff members, and the JCC board of directors for making this evening a success. We are Rockland!

David A. Kirschtel

December, 2018 Tonight is an important night in the history of JCC Rockland. Celebrating at “We are Rockland, we recognize that the JCC is here for the entire community. We also honor outstanding people who have made a real impact in the community, Steve Gold, Dr. Karen Tesik, Supervisor George Hoehmann, and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski. Their bios speak strongly of their accomplishments, but it is their character and love for our community that is truly impressive. We also honor a community treasure, the Rockland Jewish Community Campus (RJCC). The home to the JCC as well as Jewish Federation and Foundation, Rockland Jewish Family Service, the local office of Israel Bonds, the Epilepsy Society, and the entire community. In ten short years, the Jewish Community Campus has become a central address for the Jewish community and all of the people of Rockland County. It is the gathering place for both community celebrations and solemn occasions. After the tragic murders in Pittsburgh, more than 1200 people of all backgrounds came to stand together as one community in the Eisenkraft Gymnasium. It may appear to be simply a building housing the organizations that call the Campus home; however, as these organizations continue to grow their programs and their level of engagement in the community, the Campus itself is buckling under its debt. We need everyone in Rockland to work together to raise the necessary capital to ensure the continued existence of the campus. Please support the RJCC to whatever level you can. As president of the Campus and the JCC, I encourage you to contact me (president@jccrockland.org ) or call David Kirschtel, CEO (845-362-4400 x108) to discuss the ways you can help. Many thanks to my wife Robin and my children who support me in all of my endeavors. They have always understood my passionate belief in the importance of our Rockland community, the Campus, and the JCC. Finally, thanks to each of you for your support in making Rockland better for our community today as well as for generations to come.

Mitchell S. Brill

OUR HONOREES

Dr. Karen A. Tesik Dr. Tesik has been an educator in Rockland County for over twenty-five years. Throughout these years she has served as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and currently as Interim Director of Pupil Personnel Services for the South Orangetown School District. Regardless of Dr. Tesik’s title her personal and professional goal is to advocate for those in need and teach young adolescents how to advocate and lead with empathy, passion and conviction. During her tenure as Principal of South Orangetown Middle School, the school was recognized as a National School-To-Watch and a NYS Essential Elements: STW Model Middle School. The staff and students worked collaboratively to earn this title and committed to establishing traditions to teach respect, leadership and build a sense of community. One example is the Butterfly Project. This project took flight two years ago at the middle school. On an annual basis students participate in various activities including the painting of new butterflies to represent the children who perished in the Holocaust and honoring the survivors. Last year the Executive Director, Cheryl Rattner Price visited the school. Ms. Rattner Price spoke to the students about being an advocate, a leader and thanked them for their hard work and dedication in keeping the project moving forward towards meeting the goal of 1.5 million butterflies and most importantly making a difference in today’s world. Dr. Tesik has presented at local, state and national levels on various topics including advocacy, leadership and the power of collaboration. She recently completed her doctorate degree and was awarded the Scholarship Award for High Academic Achievement. She resides in North Rockland with her husband Michael.

OUR HONOREES

George Hoehmann George Hoehmann was elected Town Supervisor of Clarkstown in November 2015 and again in November 2017.  Dedicated to public service and promising a more accountable government, George has made reducing government spending a priority of his Administration.  George and the Town Board have cut over $1 Million in salaries and benefits, and reduced or eliminated compensation for the Town’s Boards and Commissions. George cut property taxes for the first time in over 30 years. He took real and practical steps to preserve our community by overhauling our zoning and building codes to eliminate certain uses in residential areas and ensure that downzoning would not occur. George created the Office of Code Compliance and put real teeth into the fight against illegal housing. Under his leadership, the Town passed the Do Not Knock Law, which over 6,000 residents have joined, to prevent unwanted solicitations; studied the Police, Recreation and Parks, and Environmental Control departments to find efficiencies; converted street lights to LED’s saving over one million dollars; became the only administration to hold Tele town Hall meetings, a cost-effective way to communicate directly with thousands of residents; expanded the Towns open space program by acquiring property on Mountainview Ave. and the Rockland Country Day School; resurfaced and paved more roads than ever before; expanded recreational services; completed Phase one of the renovation of Street Community Center and made improvements to the Germonds Pool and Lake Nanuet facilities. George initiated the Military Tribute Banner program that honors residents of Clarkstown who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Previously, George served as a Town Councilman from 2009 – 2015.  As Councilman, George devoted his tenure to innovation and fiscal discipline for the Town. He proposed the “File of Life”, a program designed to improve access to medical care information for first responders for seniors and persons with medical conditions. He proposed “Project Lifesaver”, a tracking device worn by persons in danger of wandering, especially those with dementia, or autism, that enables the police to more quickly recover these persons. In 2014, a groundbreaking, large-scale solar field proposed by George was opened on a landfill in West Nyack. This 13-acre site now contains over 8,000 solar panels creating green energy which will result in a long-term savings of over $4,000,000 to the taxpayers. In addition, this project was accomplished through a public/private partnership where the private developer covered all the installation and maintenance costs of the project. George has worked hard to save the taxpayers money in other areas, as well. George was raised in West Nyack by parents Barbara and Howard Hoehmann. He resides in Nanuet with his wife Catherine and three children Ashleen, Thomas and Ciara. George attended Clarkstown schools. Upon graduation, George attended Cathedral College in Douglaston, Queens and graduated with a BA in Philosophy and a Minor in History. He attended St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers and received a MA in Ecclesiastical History and a Masters in Divinity as well as a BA in Theology, by affiliation, from the University of St. Thomas in Rome, Italy.

OUR HONOREES

Kenneth P. Zebrowski Kenneth P. Zebrowski was first elected to the State Assembly in a special election on May 1, 2007. He was re-elected in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. A native of New City and a licensed attorney, Ken Zebrowski graduated from Clarkstown Schools before receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree Magna cum Laude in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany and his Juris Doctor degree from the Seton Hall University School of Law. Prior to his election to the State Assembly, Zebrowski was a member of the Rockland County Legislature for one year. Ken was active in the Rockland County community volunteering for several not-for-profit organizations and also serving as a youth sports coach. Professionally, upon his graduation from law school, Zebrowski was a partner in the law firm Zebrowski & Zebrowski, PC with his father Kenneth Peter Zebrowski. After Ken’s father passed away, he joined the law firm Braunfotel & Frendel, LLC. During his years of service in the State Assembly, Zebrowski has authored and passed numerous bills that affect the lives of New Yorkers. In 2013, Ken authored and passed a Hepatitis C testing bill that was the first of its kind in the nation. This bill, which has served as a template for numerous other States, has led to the testing of thousands of New Yorkers enabling them to get treatment for this life-threatening disease. Ken has been a leader in the Assembly majority by organizing coalitions of like-minded legislators to achieve real results for New York Families. Over the past several budget cycles, Ken was successful in capping the Medicaid costs of County governments, preventing reductions and changes to the STAR property tax relief program, restoring the GEA cuts to schools and protecting Rockland businesses from losing tax incentives. He led the charge to bring full day kindergarten statewide, authoring a bill that provided a model for the funding structure that was included and passed in the 2018-19 state budget. Ken has been a reform minded legislator who has sponsored bills to ensure transparency in campaign material and co-sponsored measures to close the LLC loophole and strip corrupt public officials of their taxpayer funded pensions. While working on significant state-wide legislation, Zebrowski has also been a strong advocate for Rockland County and its unique issues. There is no stronger voice against overdevelopment and illegal housing. Zebrowski’s dogged advocacy has exposed illegal building and fire code practices throughout the County that puts people’s lives and home values at risk. Due to his efforts, the Department of State and State Education Department have instituted extra-ordinary intervention within Rockland County and he has sponsored a package of legislation that overhauls the outdated inspection system of private schools. One of Ken’s priorities is ensuring Rockland County is not overlooked in State Government. An example of his work was changing a statewide manufacturing incentive program to ensure Rockland would be included. In addressing some of Rockland’s more difficult problems: he co-authored the bill that gave unprecedented review power to the New York State Comptroller over Rockland’s budget and established oversight and additional funds for the East Ramapo School District. He has also authored and passed bills for Rockland County school districts and taxpayers that have had to deal with unique tax certiorari challenges. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Banks Committee and as a member of the following committees: Codes, Judiciary, Labor, Government Employees and Ethics. The 96th Assembly District includes the entire towns of Clarkstown and Haverstraw; the district also includes part of the Town of Ramapo.

OUR HONOREES

Steve Gold Steve Gold is a tireless supporter of the JCC Rockland and Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County. The list of his leadership and volunteer activities is impressive and lengthy. For the past two-plus years, Steve has chaired Federation’s Community Relations Council (CRC). He and his colleagues vigilantly seek out anti-Semitism and address incidents of vandalism, and racist and hate-filled comments. CRC members work with other religious groups, community organizations, government officials, educators and the media to inform and educate. They initiate dialogues to bring greater understanding and tolerance to our county. Previously, Steve served the JCC as board president, fundraising vice president, and vice president. He brought worldwide attention to the 2012 online petition effort to recognize the Israeli Olympic team members slain at the Munich Games. He and the victims’ families led the campaign to have the Munich 11 Minute of Silence observed at the London Olympic Games. That effort, which was initiated by the JCC Rockland, did not result in a minute of silence at the Olympics but was commemorated at the Maccabi Games held that summer in Rockland. Steve co-chaired the opening ceremonies of those games. He has been a member of the Board of the Rockland Jewish Community Campus. Steve and his wife, Helene, are JCC Legacy Society members and supporters of the Wall of Giving. He is the co-founder of Skinny Burgers™ By Gold & Masters, a healthier alternative to traditional burgers. Steve is also the lead partner of Peace of Woodstock Stage, which is transforming the original main stage from the 1969 festival into unique 50thanniversary collectibles.

OUR HONOREES

Rockland Jewish Community Campus The Rockland Jewish Community Campus is being honored for its role as a central address for the Jewish community, enriching Jewish life, and welcoming the entire community. The Rockland Jewish Community Campus (RJCC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to secure the Campus as a central address of the Rockland Jewish Community today and for future generations. Enhancing Jewish life is at the core of its mission, and it plays a significant role in the wider community as an inviting and welcoming place for all. In 1997, the Rockland Jewish community raised $5 million to purchase its first Rockland Jewish Community Campus. It was a 26,000 sq. ft. building on 5.5 acres on Route 45 in the Town of Ramapo. The Campus thrived and outgrew the existing space. A group of Jewish leaders, who understood the invaluable role of the Campus, had a shared vision of a larger Campus. They each invested their time and financial resources and began a Capital Campaign to purchase the 135,000 sq. ft. building on 15 acres in West Nyack. The community supported the campaign. The RJCC opened on December 2, 2007 with both American and Israel flags visible as 5,000 plus community members came out on a snowy day to tour the Campus. Today, the Campus tenants include Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, Rockland Jewish Family Service, the local office of Israel Bonds, and JCC Rockland all under one roof. The agencies are thriving and benefiting from residing together. Tens of thousands of people walk through the Campus door every year. Studies show that a thriving Jewish Community Campus has a positive impact on synagogue membership and engagement with other Jewish agencies. Just a few examples of how the RJCC positively affects the community include:

The JCC has 4,000 members and another 6,000 participants annually

Rockland Jewish Family Service serves hundreds of community members in need, including the 200 families who receive monthly food packages from the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry

The Chazen Senior Center serves more than 1,000 seniors

Community wide celebrations such as Israel @ 70 under the leadership of Jewish Federation and Foundation have drawn crowds of 1,000 plus people

The Deborah Koenig full day early childhood center, for 6-week old infants to Pre-K children, started in 2014 has grown to over 100 children.

JCC Summer camps have grown from a total of 50 children in 2012 to 300 children a week

RJCC welcomes and engages affiliated and non-affiliated Jews, interfaith families, cultural Jews and plays a significant role in the wider community. It is an inviting and welcoming place, regardless of religious background, ethnicity, race, income, special needs or nationality. This year the RJCC will kick off a capital campaign to eliminate the Campus debt and secure the building for future generations. The RJCC Campus is located at 450 West Nyack Road, West Nyack NY. www.rjccampus.org. 845-362-4400
