Our Philosophy

Our experienced and dedicated instructors lead small classes that will teach your children aquatics skills in a fun, safe and nurturing environment. We want your kids to succeed and to love swimming as much as we do! For more information and to dive into swim lessons, contact Aquatics Manager Rick Taylor at rtaylor@jccns.com or 781-476-9912.

Aquatics Parent and Tot Swim

Seahorse: Level 2

Barracuda: Level 3

This is the exciting first dip into the pool for children and we make it special for everyone involved! Parents bring their children (ages 6 months to 3 years) into the pool for a fun lesson with one of our wonderful instructors. Sing songs, dance in the water and more.

Ready for the next level! Children learn important skills such as beginner front and back crawl, floating, glides (prone and supine), seated dives and treading water.

On the move! Students improve their front and back crawl by learning rotary breathing and body rotation. Breast stroke, underwater swimming, dolphin kick and diving will be introduced.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 1 or children must be able to easily enter the water and be comfortable participating in small groups.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 2 or ability to float and swim independently on front and back for at least 10 yards.

On Sundays we offer Parent Tot in two separate age groups: 6 months-2 years and 2-3 years.

Combo Starfish and Seahorse

Swim diapers are required.

Starfish: Level 1 Your children will learn basic swimming skills in this fun, no pressure class. They’ll practice blowing bubbles, floating and kicking.

This convenient option is for families who want a Level 1 or Level 2 class, but can’t make the scheduled times. Children learn skills from Starfish and Seahorse classes, including submerging their faces, floating and elementary front crawl.

Dolphin: Level 4 Students will improve their stroke technique and endurance in front and back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke and treading. They’ll refine their diving skills, too. Introducing: Zoe Dwyer (age 6 1/2), Ella McConnell (age 6) and Madeline Duffy (age 7). These all-stars wanted to take swimming lessons together at the JCCNS, but they could not find a class that worked with all three of their busy schedules. Luckily, for the girls, the JCCNS Aquatics department has Create-A-Class, which allowed them (and their moms) to form their own class at the most convenient time for them. The girls were thrilled! Their moms love that the “kids start at a young age with no bubble or float and that they are in the water the entire time with no time spent sitting on the side of the pool!” Coach Ashley works with them on stroke technique, swimming laps and gaining confidence in the pool. And, the best part for the girls is that they get to have a blast while learning to swim together!

HELPFUL HINTS FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD DIRECTOR STEPHANIE WALSH Keep It Positive I think everyone will agree that parenting can be full of joys and challenges all at the same time. No parent is perfect. However, it is important that parents empower themselves and work to act as positive role models. They should recognize that early parentchild relationships have strong effects on a child’s emotional well- being, problem-solving abilities and a child’s future success with relationships. Here are a few tips to make it a little easier, hopefully help you feel more fulfilled as a parent and enjoy your kids (even more.) 1. Nurture Your Child’s Self Esteem: Sense of self starts developing very early. Watch your tone of voice, body language and expression and let your child know they are special. Also, be a good role model. Be aware you are constantly being observed and your actions speak louder than words. 2. Catch the Good in Your Child: If your child is doing the right thing, take the time to praise and acknowledge their effort. Try to avoid saying “no” and criticizing. Use positive redirection and love whenever possible. 3. Be Consistent and Set Limits: Every child needs some discipline and the goal is to help children make “good choices” and learn self-control. It is normal for a child to test limits, but they need limits to grow and learn responsibility. 4. Spend Time with Your Child: I realize life is very busy and there is always something else that needs to be done. However, it is so important give your child one-on-one time with you. It can be as simple as reading a book together or eating breakfast together. Put the phone down, turn the TV off and really take the time to talk and see your child. It will make a world of difference to them. 5. Lastly, Know Your Own Limitations and Needs as a Parent: Parenting is difficult. Take the time to recognize that you need time and it is okay to “give yourself a time out.” Also, if you do make a mistake, forgive yourself. No one has all the answers. Realize that every parent has “needs” so take time for yourself and to be with family and friends.

Last Spring, when Kimberly and Andrew Samalis were planning their move from Florida to Swampscott, they looked at quite a few childcare centers before ultimately choosing the JCCNS for sons Henry, age 2 and Thomas, age 4. The J’s incredible reputation, wide variety of activities, amenities and caring staff made the decision easy. After visiting the JCCNS a few times, Kim and her family felt a connection and she knew she wanted her family to be part of the J’s community. “We love the teachers! The teachers at the JCCNS are hands down the most loving, caring nurturing group of teachers we have found since putting our children in daycare,” Kim says. After loving his time at the Summer at the J camp last summer, Thomas now takes part in the afterschool PEPs, including Tae Kwon Do, Sports Rangers and Swimming. Kimberly is able to enjoy the J’s fitness center after she drops the boys at school and loves the convenience of being able to exercise before going to work. The Samalis family has quickly become an active and wonderful part of the JCCNS community and we love that their connection to the J is a full-family experience!

Introducing…Marty Orloff! Marty is a longtime JCCNS member and a member of the Men’s Health Club. He learned about Pickleball about 9 years ago but did not start playing seriously until 3 years ago… And now he’s a huge Pickleball fan. “It’s an easy game to lean that is great for all ages, couples and families,” Marty says. “It was actually invented in the Seattle are by a family that was looking for a fun activity at a picnic in their back yard. The name Pickleball was derived by the name of their dog ‘Pickles’ that would chase after the ball. It is supposedly the fastest growing sport in the country now!” Marty and a few other locals brought Pickleball to the JCCNS about 2 years ago. Now he can spread the word out to local players who are looking for places to play. “We have a good group of experienced players and new comers just starting,” he says proudly. “Myself and the more experienced players are always willing to teach and help newer players.” The program has grown to as many as 20-25 players on some Saturday mornings. It is currently set up for more experienced players to come and play between 7:00am and 9:30am and newer players starting at 9:30am until 12:00pm. Of course, as always, everyone is welcome so maybe you can try Pickleball this year? Marty would love to have you join him on the court!
