Dr. Myra Gutin is an
authority and author on the topic of American first ladies, Dr. Gutin is the author of The President’s Partner: The First Lady in the Twentieth Century, and Barbara Bush: First Lady of Literacy. Widely quoted in national and international news media, her research interests also include political communication and women in politics.
Michelle Obama played an important role in the recently concluded presidential campaign. For almost a year she criss-crossed the United States raising money, speaking about her husband and trying to bring out the faithful on Election Day. Mrs. Obama's role was not very different from that played by Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barbara Bush or even Betty Ford. Through ups and down, missteps and moments of triumph, the first lady or the those aspiring to be first lady have met the American public in an attempt to persuade the grass roots to cast a vote for their favorite candidate. Please join us for a discussion of "Tercentenary Theater"--the presidential campaign and the way in which the first lady functions as a campaigner.
