Meet Allison! This former professional ballerina found a new way to exercise after she walked away from dance and fell in love with strength training. "I had never been in a weight room in my entire life; ballerinas aren't allowed to have biceps!" she said. Read more about Allison's journey at JCCindy.org/blog.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) ECE teachers love to do mitzvot, or good deeds, in their classrooms: • M s. Rachel's South Wing Infants 1 class recently learned about tzedakah, or giving charity. The students painted their own tzedakah boxes, and the classroom families voted to give the coins inside to Ronald McDonald House.

• M s. Heather's and Ms. Kelsey's North Wing Early Preschool class collected stamps for the American Legion Auxiliary's Creative Arts program, who then sent the stamps to Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals around the country. Looking at and sorting the stamps is a stimulating activity for the veterans (who have served in all wars and conflicts since World War II) and helps them overcome their anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and loneliness.

Arts & Education Most recognize Susan Vinicor as a Pilates instructor, but she's a fervent JCC Arts & Education supporter as well. "My Pilates classes and other fitness pursuits at the J attend to my desire to remain physically active as long as possible, and Arts & Education feeds my appetite as a lifelong learner," Susan said. That she can enjoy both arts and fitness programming at one location is a bonus. "I always tell people that the JCC is the best-kept secret in Indianapolis because it offers so much!" Susan Vinicor, Pilates instructor and Friends of the Arts donor

Susan appreciates the cultural richness Arts & Education exposes her to, whether it be interesting books or revelatory experiences with authors, thought-provoking films or the beauty of a dance performance. "I am happy to give of my time serving on the Arts & Education committee and treasure by donating to Friends of the Arts to keep the programs going," she said. Shinshi-NEWS Maya in scouts planting flowers on Tu B'Shevat

Shinshinim, a Hebrew acronym for Shnat Sherut or “year of service,” are the best and the brightest of Israel’s recent high school graduates who have deferred army service to spend a year in a diaspora community. They serve the community through volunteering in synagogues, the JCC, Hebrew schools and youth groups.

"Tu B'Shevat in Israel" by Maya and Jasmin The 15th day (tu) of Shevat on the Jewish calendar is the beginning of a new year for trees. This day, which symbolizes regeneration, marks the season in which the earliest blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. Israelis celebrate by planting trees and flowers, eating dried fruits and looking at the beautiful almond trees that blossom at that time of year. Jasmin and her sister on Tu B'Shevat

To learn more about Tu B'Shevat, visit JCCindy.org/holiday, where you can also listen to a song about almond trees blooming.

Follow the Shinshinim on Facebook (@ShinshinimINDY) and Instagram (@shinshinim.indy) to keep up with all of their activities!
