THE JEWISH MOSAIC: From Gold Rush to Gold Records

Featuring in-depth seminars with distinguished Scholars in Residence Dr. Emily Katz & Bree Burgess

SEMINAR 1, Dr. Emily Katz

THURSDAY

WEDNESDAY

TUESDAY

MONDAY

California Jews

9 -10:15 a.m.

SEMINAR 2, Bree Burgess 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Jews & American Music

CALIFORNIA’S JEWISH PIONEERS Learn about the first Jews to strike roots in California, as participants in the Gold Rush and as founding figures of the Jewish communities of San Francisco and Los Angeles. We’ll read from poignant memoirs of the era in order to reveal the triumphs, struggles, and everyday lives of 19th-century California Jews.

TIN PAN ALLEY: The Jews who paved Tin Pan Alley From the creation of our country’s publishing and music copyright laws to the songs we love to hear and sing, Tin Pan Alley - and the Jews who dominated it - established American music as a unique force for success, expression, and pure pleasure. Learn about the writers, and sing along to timeless melodies like “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and “Happy Days Are Here Again”.

JEWS AND HOLLYWOOD How did Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe become movie moguls, shaping the film industry from the ground up and changing American culture indelibly? How “Jewish” is Hollywood, anyway? Join the discussion about the presence and influence of Jews in the film industry--past and present, real and perceived.

BROADWAY: Beyond Fiddler... With giants like Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Kern (just to name a few), a handful of Jews created and dominated something that is uniquely American the Broadway musical. Learn which shows were ground breakers, and sing along to a few show stoppers.

WEST COAST JUDAISM Explore the historic institutions and daring innovations of Jewish life in California, from the classical Reform of San Francisco’s Temple Emanu El to postwar LA’s entrepreneurial experiments in Jewish learning. Uncover fascinating trends in Jewish culture and life today, including the rising significance of Jewish film festivals and museums and the changing nature of the Jewish family.

POP/ROCK: Jews on the Record From the top of the charts to your favorite album, Jewish artists have sold millions of records, with their popular music and rock n’ roll reflecting, shaping, and celebrating our world. Carole King, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and the bands KISS, Van Halen and even Guns ‘N’ Roses have Guns ‘N’ Moses in the family tree. Plan on some quality time with classics like “You’ve Got A Friend”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”.

JEWS AGAINST PREJUDICE? ETHNIC RELATIONS AND THE QUEST FOR CIVIL RIGHTS California Jews have encountered other ethnic minorities as neighbors, as competitors, and as allies. When have Jews stood with and for other minority groups, and when have they stood apart? What lessons can we learn from these historic interactions?

SWING: Lovechild of Klezmer and Jazz With it’s roots in the African American experience, Jazz is just that American. Throw in a little Klezmer influence, and suddenly Benny Goodman plays, Richard Rodgers writes, Helen Forest sings, and the world swings! Let’s croon, hum a tune, and cut a rug to some of the greatest music ever!

Daily Schedule 8:30 a.m. 9-10:15 a.m. 10:15-10:30 a.m. 10:30-11:45 a.m. 12-1 p.m.

The Slutzky Art Gallery Presents: Alison Hyman – “L’Chaim…to Life” Dates: 4/15-5/31/13 Come Meet the Artist: Opening Reception: 4/21/13, 4-6 p.m. Open to the Community! Artist Bio: Alison Hyman was born in Glasgow, Scotland and currently lives and works in Irvine, California. She received an MFA in painting from Laguna College of Art and Design and a BA Honors from Glasgow School of Art in textile design and printmaking. She has exhibited frequently since 1970, in group and juried exhibitions in Britain and USA, and in solo shows both in Los Angeles, (“Conversations”Arena 1 Gallery Santa Monica, June 2011) and London, (“Macbeth”The Old Vic, Sept-Nov1980). Her published work includes illustrating the Glasgow Year of Culture brochure in 1990. Alison’s work documents her surroundings: her drawings spanning decades of travels, and her oils reflecting her many lively meals with family and friends.

Artist Statement: My work is a visual diary, a snapshot in time, comprising unguarded moments that capture the essence of the time, place or event. It is a series of small and large conversations. It is also an exploration of subtle dichotomies: the gestures can be read as benign or threatening. Is he in process of standing or sitting down; is she being aggressive or just animated? Each figure is distinct but the interdependence is crucial. The events are fleeting, but there is also an implied passage of time in the long horizontal, cinematic layouts which require the viewer’s eye to move rather than taking in the whole piece in an instant. In some paintings, the view through the glass objects distorts the figures and this is significant as it reflects our personal interactions. Family, faith, and food are the cornerstones of my life. I spend a large part of my time creating meals as events, such as Friday night Sabbath dinners or Passover seders. The Jewish religious calendar is full of these events, accompanied by rituals such as the blessings over candles, bread, and wine on a Friday, or special foods such as matzah at Passover or pomegranates, apples and honey at the New Year. As this adherence to ritual is such a large part of my life, so the elements of these rituals take presence in my paintings.

JCC Early Childhood Learning Center

We’re Your Partners in Childhood Education Preschool at the J

Transitional Kindergarten

Our preschool will help your child develop a lifelong love of learning and our teaching faculty will help prepare your child for the best kindergartens in Orange County

Do you want your child to be a leader and excited about learning?

The Merage JCC’s Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC), provides a smooth transition from home to school where children learn to explore and relate to a wider world. Our goal is to build a strong foundation and nurture a joy of lifelong learning. We offer programs for children six weeks old through Transitional Kindergarten. CURRICULUM: Our curriculum is founded upon the richness of Judaic tradition and values and is deeply inspired by the theories and philosophies of the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. This philosophy of early learning maintains a strong focus on children’s academic development through an approach that fosters a love for literacy, math and science. Each day we provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth that prepare children for kindergarten readiness. In our small class sizes, children develop research, inquiry and critical thinking skills. Children construct meaning from their learning environments which seamlessly blend the richness of Jewish values, traditions and holiday celebrations into our early childhood education. JCC preschoolers and their families have access to an unparalleled facility and all the benefits of the entire Merage JCC, including indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, swimming pools and spacious grounds. Through creative hands-on experiences, our children embark on a journey from home to kindergarten. Our programs are designed and based upon the most recent research in brain development and are founded upon cutting edge child development. We know that children learn and progress as they grow and develop new skills and ways of thinking and perceiving. In our stimulating classroom environment our children are encouraged to embark on an exploration of concepts, gain awareness and understanding of literacy and numeracy, and become more articulate, confident individuals.

ECLC SPRING SESSION 2 2013 MAY 6 TO MAY 31, 2013

Transitional Kindergarten is a very exciting time in your child’s school experience. “TK” at the Merage JCC is designed for children who either “just miss” or “just make” the cut-off for Kindergarten entrance, but would benefit more from a small class size and enhanced curriculum in this year. Our TK program is taught by experienced Kindergarten teachers and offers the gift of an added or enhanced year for children who fall on the “cusp” of entry into elementary school. Children are prepared to continue on to Kindergarten or a first grade upon completion of the TK program.

Registration opens April 25 In person or online

SHAVUOT CAMP May 15 and 16 by registration only.

Our program focuses energy on building a strong classroom community based on mutual respect and fostering social-emotional growth in each child. Over the course of the TK year, your child will dive deep into literacy and math and science explorations, learning key concepts through a variety of lenses. The children will strengthen their relationships with the alphabet, build a solid foundation of reading skills, and expand their understand of the purpose of writing and varying forms of communication. Math will focus on developing strong numeracy skills and problem-solving from multiple perspectives. The TK community of learners will use experiences in the real world to examine and interpret their academic and socialemotional understanding.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: April 22 ECLC & ITC Closed @ 3:30 p.m. MEMORIAL DAY, Monday, May 27 ECLC Closed

In our small class sizes of 18 students to 2 teachers, children actively research, inquire and think critically about the world around them. While our academic standards are fixed goals we are working towards during the Transitional Kindergarten year, our school’s philosophy is to have a flexible inquiry-based curriculum that is guided by a series of research questions. At the heart of everything we do is the ultimate goal of fostering curious, creative, and critical thinkers.

STILL A FEW SPACES OPEN FOR 2013 SCHOOL YEAR! Call to take a tour or to be placed on the waiting list.

FOR MORE INFORMATION about the ECLC, call the Preschool Office at (949) 435-3400, ext. 290 or email meragejccpreschool@jccoc.org
