See bus schedule next page. Throughout the day, buses will be running between each venue and the Transportation Hub at the Merage JCC Campus in the TVT parking lot. Athlete/Artists will need to go through the Hub to get to all venues. This allows the bus operation to run smoothly while allowing athletes to cheer on their fellow athletes. Only athletes/artists and coaches are permitted to ride buses to Games activities. Athletes who are dropped off at the Hub in the morning will be able to take bus transportation directly to their athletic venues. Buses will be labeled with the names of the venues. Late arrival to the Hub for bus pick-up or to the Games venue will be grounds for forfeit. A specific morning bus schedule, from the Hub to the venues for the first game/match, etc., will be available. We will not hold buses for late athletes. Athletes may be dropped at their specific sports venue from 7:30 a.m. prior to the first scheduled event (refer to the Guide Book or OC Maccabi website for locations and times) only if approved in advance by the athletes’ coach. Athletes are required to ride the buses during the day for athletic competition. They may not drive themselves or ride in cars with anyone other than their Delegation Head (if the situation requires doing so). Host Families are encouraged to come and watch the athletes compete and to cheer them on, but may not drive them during the day after morning dropoff. Athletes/Artists are not allowed to return to their host family home during the day. They must remain with the JCC Maccabi Games program from morning drop-off until pick-up after Evening Events (with the exception of Host Family Night). This includes local Team OC athletes/artists.

Tel Aviv/OC Beach Party at Newport Dunes On Monday night the OC meets Tel Aviv. Come celebrate with your new friends as Maccabi takes over the Newport Dunes Resort. One side of the beach bowl will be Tel Aviv themed with a DJ, dancing and more. Visit the Israeli shuk (market) for funky hair artists, air brush tattoos and caricaturists. Then head over to the California side to check out live bands including singing group Six13, A Sharp Turn Ahead and more. Also try out inflatable twister or the water tag maze and jump your heart out at our giant bounce house.

Boomers/Irvine Lanes

On Tuesday night the 2013 JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest are taking over Boomers and Irvine Lanes. See how many strikes you and your friends can get at Irvine Lanes, check out who has the faster lap on the go-kart track, battle it out in the Laser Tag Maze or play one of the many arcade games at Boomers.

Transportation to evening activities will leave from the TVT Maccabi Bus Station at the end of the day’s athletic competition and arts workshops. Buses will begin loading promptly at 4:30 p.m. and depart starting at 4:45. All buses will be loaded by delegation on a first come first served basis. After Monday and Tuesdays evening activities, athletes will be picked up by their host families at the evening activity. On Thursday night, after the Closing Party, athletes will be picked up at the Merage JCC. All teens are expected to check out with their coaches and delegation heads before leaving with their host families Orange County athletes are required to check out with Team Orange County Delegation Heads and Coaches.

JCC Cares activities are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Check the schedule on the following pages for the time and venue of your project. When you arrive at your JCC Cares venue, look for the sign reading JCC Cares sign-in.

Rachmanus Rules During the JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest®, athletes, artists, coaches, artists in residence, delegation heads, chaperones and spectators are bound by the Rachmanus Rule of fair play. Participants are expected to support teens of all backgrounds and levels of experience. “Blowing out” a much weaker team for the sake of scoring points is contrary to the spirit of the JCC Maccabi Games® and shows a lack of Rachmanus (mercy/compassion). Artists are by nature collaborators who support and encourage one another. Making fun of a delegation, specialty or artist shows a lack of Rachmanus (mercy/compassion). Lashon Harah (slander, gossip, trash talk), putting down other athletes or artists, making fun of a weaker team or athlete, making fun of an artists or specialty shows a lack of Rachmanus. JCC Maccabi athletes and artists are expected to engage, interact with, and support teeens that are not from their delegation, or in their sport or specialty. The atmosphere of JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest and its significance as a truly Jewish event will be enhanced if both participants and spectators have an understanding of and a commitment to following the Rachmanus Rule.

22

JCC Maccabi Guide Book

The Rachmanus Rule States: •

Treat others as you would like to be treated

Be a good loser

Be a gracious winner

Practice good sportsmanship

Respect teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and spectators

Demonstrate fair play at all times

Refrain from actions that may cause injury to others

Lead by example

Project a sense of pride

No taunting

Make a positive difference on the field of play or in the art workshops

JCC Maccabi Guide Book

JCC Maccabi Glossary Delegation: This is the team/community that athletes/artists are representing. Every artist, athlete and coach is attached to a delegation. For example: Team Orange County is also known as the Delegation from Orange County. Delegation Head: This is the Delegation leader. They are the head supervisor for all the artists, coaches and athletes who are participating in the Games or ArtsFest for that delegation. The Delegation Head is your first point of contact for any issues arising with the teens that you are hosting. Maccabi Central: The central office for the JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest is located in the Children’s Lounge at the Hub (Merage JCC). Any phone calls/ emails/other communications will come through Maccabi Central. If you have a problem relating to housing or any other Maccabi related issues, you should call your Delegation Head immediately. (See the phone listing on the inside back page.)

Hub: The central location for the JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest. In Orange County the hub is the Merage JCC. It is where our bus routes originate, where lunch is served, where Hang Time is located and it is generally the place where athletes will congregate at the start and end of the day.

Venue: Sites where Maccabi Week athletic competition or other events are taking place. The Games will be using 10 venues across Irvine, Newport Beach, Tustin and Garden Grove. Credentials: The identification tag that every spectator, volunteer, artist, coach, athlete and host family must be wearing in order to get past security at any JCC Maccabi venues. Credentials are a laminated information card attached to a lanyard. You should wear your credentials at all times during Maccabi Week! Tarbut V’Torah (TVT or Tarbut): The Jewish Day School located on the same campus as the Merage JCC. The parking lot for this venue is accessed at the same address as for the Merage JCC at 1 Federation Way, Irvine, CA, 92603. For reasons of convenience, this guide uses the name Merage JCC for events that are being held on the entire Samueli Jewish Campus.
