Happy New Year........... Once again another year has passed and we begin anew. In 2014, we will look back and reflect, wondering if our efforts as Republican women have made a difference in our community and our state. We meet in unity with one another to echo our sentiments and reinforce our values as conservatives. Despite the diversity and circumstances in our individual lives, this is the one unifying force that binds and solidifies our alliance with each other. After all, it is our duty to extol the virtues of Republican values not only to each other, but to others who are looking for direction and purpose in their lives. Without the efforts of our board members, there would be no platform for us to express our beliefs, engage our passions, and convey our philosophy. We would not be a collective, force of compassionate women volunteering our time to make a difference within our community. The tireless efforts of our board allow all the members of Active Republican Women of Las Vegas an avenue to promote our conservative convictions. Our board members come from all walks of life, with different purposes and life choices compelling their ambition to succeed and accomplish. They are mothers and matriarchs, professionals and lay people, single and married, each with an unwavering dedication to stave off the onslaught of left-wing duplicity that has afflicted our nation’s culture, religious freedom, and defining values. One of the board members works two full time jobs, another is a single, full time college student who also works full time. In fact, 4 of the 5 executive board members work full time with many others also volunteering their career talents in full time positions within other Republican organizations. Despite their varied backgrounds and life experiences, they work selflessly and diligently to impart, preserve, and propagate the conservative movement from a woman’s perspective. As a club of conservative Republican women, we are empowered with a desire for success in ourselves and others. We believe in the drive for accomplishment and the dignity it delivers. We repudiate the notion that government is the answer to all that distresses our society and community. We believe in ambition and tenacity, self reliance and personal responsibility as the solutions to our nation’s challenges. We must especially remember that there are greater needs in our society than our own petty necessities, and that if there are differences within our organization, they are inconsequential in comparison to the challenges that beset our great nation. I’m honored to be the President of this great club, a role I simply could not hold if for not all the support by this board. I also welcome the desire of any member within the club to come be a part of our amazing board. As we embark upon the new election year of 2014, we understand that it will be a very interesting time as our political rivals attempt to salvage what is proving to be the failure of their core philosophical beliefs. Let’s not forget our own philosophy and the promises it can fulfill once again as we strive for the restoration of this great country.
My heartfelt appreciation and together, let’s look forward to an amazing 2014! 3

Literacy...Molly Governs A NEW YEAR CALL TO ARW LITERACY ACTION In this new year of 2014 the importance of American history is diminished or in some cases forgotten altogether. Popular conservative radio host, Rush Limbaugh, brings together a fun take on what children are missing by not knowing some of the famous American historical figures with a number one best seller, Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans. This book is written for ages 10 – 14 in mind, upper elementary school into middle school aged children. As an ARW Literacy Committee project let’s donate at least 30 copies of this book as a classroom collection to a needy school within our Las Vegas area. The book can be found on Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobel and other book sellers. Please consider purchasing a copy of this book and together we can fulfill this goal for at least one classroom. Another, choice for fulfilling the need for American history learning in schools for the school libraries and classrooms would be the three volume set of America, the Last Best Hope, Volumes 1, 2, and 3 By Dr. William J. Bennett, Secretary of Education during the Reagan Administration. This set of well researched and comprehensive works of American History is written for schools, upper elementary through high school. At least one set would be a worthwhile donation to any school. Multiple sets donated by ARW members would be even better. Together ARW members can bring our rich American history back into our local classrooms. Let’s do it in 2014 and make this a very Happy New Year! Molly Governs ARW Literacy Chair
Caring for America...Barbara Altman
We were honored this year by the Federation and received the Caring for America award for our club. I am so proud of this award, because we worked really hard in supporting our troops and our schools. We also received recognition from the Clark County School Districts -Community Partnership Program by inviting me to their Community Partnership Appreciation Breakfast. To all the Active Republican members I want to thank you all your participation in making it possible for our troops to be taken care of and of course a shout out to Patricia Derrick for her tireless work for our Military this year. She has done an amazing job. I also want to thank you ladies for your support of our Schools. You never said, no to me when I asked for something for our adopted School. Next year we will be adopting Hyde Park Middle School in their Vex Robots’ department to raise money for their supplies and parts needed to win world championships. Wishing you Peace, Health and Happiness in the New Year. Barbara Altman Caring for America Chairman

ARW Editorial Page Apparently the White House referred to Christmas Trees as “Holiday Trees” for the first time this year which prompted CBS presenter, Ben Stein, to present this piece which I would like to share with you. I think it applies just as much to many countries as it does to America . . . The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

Email us at ARWLV@ymail.com our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?” In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbour as yourself. And we said OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said okay.
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejewelled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are, Christmas trees.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, “Merry Christmas” to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a crib, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.' Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat. Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.
Are you laughing yet? Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it. Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Pass it on if you think it has merit.
Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early show and Jane Clayson asked her, “How could God let something like this happen?” (regarding Hurricane Katrina). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said; “I believe God’s deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of
If not, then just discard it.... no one will know you did. But if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in. My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully, Ben Stein 13

I am a Republican because…
I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.
I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability
I believe free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.
I believe government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.
I believe the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least.
I believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.
I believe Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.
I believe Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.
Finally, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
