Somebody once asked Steve Lacy: "Steve, please explain in ten seconds what's the difference between composition and improvisation." Lacy's answer: "You have all the time you need for ten seconds of composition. For ten seconds of improvisation you have - well, exactly ten seconds." "Every soprano player looks up to Steve Lacy," Wayne Shorter once said. And we know that Wayne was taught by John Coltrane, who made the jazzy soprano saxophone popular in 1960. The soprano, however, was only Trane's secondary instrument. Steve Lacy was the first important musician to dedicate almost his entire life to the soprano sax. Even the great Sidney Bechet - together with Hawkins the progenitor of all saxophonists - played the clarinet in addition to the soprano. Avove all, Lacy is an improvising musician. Steve Lacy died on 4 June 2004. He was one of the most important and innovative improvisational musicians to ever leave this planet.

ARTIST: STEREO LISA TITLE: ANNO ONNO MONNO 4 250 079 75 765 7
Adaptations of little tales like Bongo Bar, Girls Camp, or Wedding in a Gherkin Glass make up the irresistible charm of this unusual band. Founded in 2001, Stereo Lisa features two female vocalists, nine instrumentalists, and the Olaf Ton Quintet in the midst of it all. Ingenuity, creative play, and perfect technical skill come up as ingredients for a captivating blend of musical styles, from free jazz to hip hop. In an ecstatic flight of fancy, these musicians celebrate a playfulness that borders on obsession. Apart from Gebhard Ullmann, definitely one of the most important German tenor saxophonists, there are eleven other nonconformists, from Berlin-based dyed-in-the-wool clarinetist J端rgen Kupke to angelic vocalists Ibadet Ramadani and Almut K端hne; for each of them, Benjamin Weidekamp invented tailor-made voices. You'll find no mere fellow travellers or nonessentials in STEREO LISA, even the smallest character in a given story is perfectly cast. So why on earth didn't they do likewise in SAT.1's real Girls Camp show? Well, if they had we would have missed a great story and a good laugh.

Paco de Lucia is the undisputed champion of the flamenco guitar. For thirty years, he has been a role model, an idol, and a forerunner of modern flamenco. In the meantime, he has risen from a shadowy insider's existence to worldwide popularity. Celebrated as a child prodigy at the age of eleven, de Lucía has ventured beyond the borders of his genre on many occasions. Though he experimented with different musical styles, he never neglected his roots. "You grab tradition with one hand, and with the other hand you scratch, you search. With tradition you can go anywhere and run away, but without leaving that root". That's how de Lucía describes his approach to integrate old and new styles.

Born 1953 in Chicago, Chaka Khan joined in the beginning of the 1970s the funk rock group Rufus. While most of the singers remained discrete, she developed a highly energetic and sexually suggestive stage persona. The first hit was in 1974 with "Tell Me Something Good" which was written by Steve Wonder. Soon the soul singer became the highlight of the band. Already at that time with the roughness and volume in her voice everyone knew nobody could play with that lady. It wasn’t very surprisingly when Chaka Khan left Rufus in 1978 and released her first successful solo record "I’m Every Woman". In search for respect for her work she started with jazz but her label wanted her to do hits which he had with "Ain’t nobody" and "I Feel For You". Drugs and Alcoholism came after the worldwide success story in the 1970s and 1980s. In the new century the singer started all over again and found her way to a comeback. In an interview she said: "I don’t want to be pigeonholed, I want to be the mediator, a healer. Musicians are dreamer. A culture without art and music is a dead culture." Mission accomplished.

4 250 079 74 159 5 DVD-5 Video Dolby Digital 2.0 NTSC 16:9 Regional Code: All Running Time: 79 minutes
There is no need to talk about the meaning of Archie Sheep’s "Fire Music" of the 1960s, his research for the essence of the Afro-American music, the blues or his political engagement. Shepp belongs to one of the independent, self-contained and artistically most important personalities and his creativity goes far beyond music. In the last decades he exposed time and again with the tradition and researched its possibilities together with various partners. For over 10 years he performs regularly with the French singer Mina Agossi. She drew attention to herself with a few experimenting; undogmatic albums that contained blues, rock and free jazz and brought an astonishing fresh mixture. With her rebellious attitude she differs pleasantly from the well-behaved recent mainstream singers.
