WELCOME A warm welcome to all participants, faculty, volunteers, session musicians, visitors, and audience! We are proud to present the 1st edition of the Jazz Hap Festival, and the 3rd edition of the Jazz Harp Academy. A new festival for lovers of jazz, blues, singer-songwriting and improvisation, built around an intensive educational program for harp players with aspirations beyond the obvious traditions. Audience and participants can enjoy three days of inspiring concerts, jam sessions, workshops and presentations. We hope that you will enjoy being part of this festival weekend, and that it will be an enlightening experience for you. We sincerely thank BplusC Library and center for Arts and Culture, the City of Leiden, and other local partners for a warm welcome in this beautiful city. Our gratitude also concerns the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, VSB fonds, Cultuurfonds Leiden and other benefactors. We’d like to stay in touch and meet you again, either online or at future events. THE JAZZ HARP ACADEMY Ever since the start of the Jazz Harp Foundation in 2007, we have pictured a jazz harp course that is more than an incidental workshop. A training that is designed to last, to help talented students and professionals advance their jazz harp playing, and to give beginner and intermediate players more tools and confidence to improvise. An intensive course with a faculty of the finest jazz harpists ànd non-harpist jazz educators. Providing opportunity to experience playing in a band, jam sessions and inspirational concerts by faculty members. In 2010, the Jazz Harp Academy was born in Rotterdam. At the invitation of Louisiana State University, the 2nd edition took place in the USA at the birthplace of jazz, and today, you are attending its 3rd edition.

THE JAZZ HARP FESTIVAL This edition of the Academy is taking place under the umbrella of an entire Jazz Harp Festival, another dream come true. With many local, national and international partners, we are happy to present a full program of activities celebrating the versatility of the harp in jazz, blues, singer-songwriting and improvisation. Festival headliner is the ‘First Lady of Electric Harp’ Deborah Henson-Conant, who will perform an exciting one-woman show on Friday at the beautiful Aalmarktzaal, and teach a set of inspiring lessons and workshops. Further international harpist faculty members Wh[i_d][h#ied]mh_j[hWdZ\eba^Whf_ijCW[l[=_bY^h_ijKI7%IYejbWdZWdZ`Wpp^Whf_ij Heii_jpWC_b[liaW<hWdY[%8kb]Wh_W$J^[om_bbfbWoWjj^[IY^[bj[cWYecfb[n_dWd exclusive double bill performance on Sunday October 13. @Wppcki_Y_WdiWdZ[ZkYWjehi\hecJ^[D[j^[hbWdZiWdZWXheWZm_bbj[WY^Wjj^[ Jazz Harp Academy and give various workshops. The festival is working closely with BplusC center for Art and Culture. The characteristic BplusC building Het Leidse Volkshuis is the central festival venue bustling with activity for three days in a row. There are workshops especially for harpists, workshops for all instrumentalists and even activities for those who do not even play an instrument, such as ‘Body Percussion’ or ‘Listening to jazz’. Open mic sessions will take place at the Expo, where the Passion Food cafe will also be located amidst a wonderful harp exhibit. On Saturday night, a lively jam session will be held at De Branderij, where debut jazz players can be heard alongside seasoned jazz musicians. Comify, a new social medium on the verge of its international launch, will be reporting from the festival online. Also, parts of the festival can be seen worldwide through live streaming, and young talent will be enabled to record webcasts of their playing. All this is made possible through a crowdfunding project at www.voordekunst.nl and with the important support of Cultuurfonds Leiden, the VSB Fonds and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.

– with special guests Olga Shishkina and the Red Limo String Quartet Friday, October 11, 2013 – 20.15 @ Aalmarktzaal, Aalmarkt 7, 2311 EC Leiden € 18 / € 15 for youth up to 18, and BplusC students Tickets to be collected at Het Leidse Volkshuis On Friday night, festival headliner Deborah Henson-Conant, the American ‘First Lady of Electric Harp’, will perform in the beautiful Aalmarktzaal. A charismatic performer accompanying her songs, storytelling and jazz and blues playing with the strap-on electric harp. Henson-Conant will show us the true versatility of this instrument, and at the same time make us realize that it isn’t so much about the instrument you play, but about what you communicate through it. Proof of this will also be given in a special one-time collaboration with the grooving Red Limo String Quartet. The Jazz Harp Festival is further proud to present Olga Shishkina as a special guest to Deborah Henson-Conant’s show, in collaboration with Koistinen Kantele. Olga is a top talent on the electric Kantele, the ultramodern version of an old Finnish folk instrument. An exciting and for sure very inspiring concert!

DEBORAH HENSON-CONANT :[XehW^>[died#9edWdj_iW=H7CCO#Dec_dWj[Zh[YehZ_d]Whj_ijWdZj^[mehbZ½i premier electric harpist. She’s known for her high energy shows with orchestra and on solo stages, her evocative singing voice, her fusion of music and theater – and, for transforming the classical concert harp into a ‘Street Harp’ – a powerful, fully electric instrument a seventh of the size of a concert harp and fully electric. Her playing ranges from full-out bluesy to heart wrenching ballad. This is a feel-good, outside-the-box, bring-the-folks-you-love kind of show for audiences of all genders and ages- folks who want to celebrate what it means to passionately follow your own creative path. ‘Harpist, singer, songwriter, composer, author, cartoonist, entertainer, comedian – mix those together and you can just begin to describe Deborah Henson-Conant. Using her voice, her custom-built harp, her creativity and her love of symphonic music, Deborah Henson-Conant sculpts sound like others sculpt clay. Her performances blur the line between concert and Musical Theater. In her solo shows, she creates a world of sound, story and imagery out of solo harp and voice. In her orchestra shows she brings her background of improvisation and theater together with a love of lush, colorful orchestrations.’ JAZZ HARP FESTIVAL & ACADEMY 2013

Still in her mid twenties, Edinburgh born harpist, singer and composer Maeve Gilchrist has been credited as an innovator on her native Celtic Harp due to her unique chromatic and improvisational approach to the instrument. With her distinct vocal sound and exquisite harp playing, Gilchrist has brought audiences to their feet all el[h;khef[WdZDehj^7c[h_YW$ Daughter to an Irish mother and Scottish father she grew up immersed in traditional folk music. Today, she is the first lever harpist to be employed as an instructor by the Berklee College of Music’s string department and has written a folk harp method book, published by Hal Leonard Music. Maeve is based in Boston MA. She tours regularly with her own trio, featuring bass and fiddle and fusing her Scottish roots with the colors and freedoms of jazz. Alongside her classical music studies in piano and harp at the Amsterdam Conservatory, Rosetty was active as a pop singer, resulting in several albums with record YecfWdo9DH$7i_jmWi¼dejZed[½_dj^ei[o[WhijefbWo pop or jazz as a conservatory student in professional classical music studies, she was forced to quit this career and cancel her record deal. Later on, Rosetty took up the thread of writing songs and today, over 15 of her songs have been recorded by well known Dutch artists. Rosetty was long time principal harpist of the Metropole Orchestra, also referred to as the ‘world leading jazzorchestra’, which enabled her to work with the likes of Steve Vai, Bob Brookmeyer and Herbie Hancock. Since 2009, she is teaching arranging and improvisation lessons at the conservatories of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Habiba writes delightful and gentle songs, like small tales, which she accompanies with her harp in a playful and rhythmic way, incorporating pop, jazz, blues and folk influences to create intimate and original music. As a live performer, Habiba is being described as ‘driven and intense’. Habiba picked up the harp at an early age. While enrolled at the Amsterdam Conservatory harp department, she felt a great need to make her own songs, instead of studying the classical repertoire, and decided to give in to this urge. In the Summer of 2007, she won the ‘Amsterdamse Cee_[Dej[d½Yecf[j_j_ed$?d(&&."i^[fh[i[dj[Z^[h EP ‘Jewellery Box’, and on April 18, 2013, her debut album named ‘Take Flight’. After studying classical music at the Rotterdam Conservatory, supplemented with arranging courses, Ghislaine has been teaching harp since 1980. Inspired at first by Harvi Griffin at the World Harp Congress in 1990 she started playing jazz harp. Many master classes and lessons followed with a variety of ^Whf_ijiikY^Wi>Whl_m^eci^[_dl_j[ZjeJ^[D[j^[hlands more than once), Park Stickney and others. Alongside her extensive teaching practice, Ghislaine has her own jazz combo named Silly Strings. She writes swinging arrangements, compositions, and musical theatre productions to perform with her students. She published the ‘Harpomania’ method for pop harp and developed workshops under the same title with Annemarie van Dijk.

GUEST ARTISTS

OLGA SHISHKINA

Olga is one of the main characters in the process of “reintroducing” Russian gusli and Finnish kantele to the music world by breaking national and stylistical limitations. She studied at St. Petersburg State RimskyKorsakov Conservatory majoring in gusli and in the meantime attending piano, organ and orchestral conducting classes. After graduating with the highest honors Olga moved to Helsinki and started Masters degree studies in Finnish concert kantele at Sibelius Academy. At the same time, following her interest to jazz, she also studied jazz piano as a secondary instrument. With her guitar and kantele duo project “Off limits” she was the first ever to use electric kantele in jazz context. Currently, Olga is actively involved as an electric kantele player in improvisational music.

RED LIMO STRING QUARTET After eight years of playing jazz, hiphop, bluegrass and pop music the Red Limo String Quartet possesses the qualities of a band, skillfully using their string instruments for playing bass lines, guitar licks and drum patterns. They enjoy surprising their audiences with all kinds of swinging, groovy or funky music, taking advantage but also extending the possibilities of a traditional string quartet. As part of the Dutch band ‘The Kyteman Orchestra’, Red Limo has taken on many large popfestivals in Holland, Germany, and just recently in Moscow. At the moment they are on tour with singer Janne Schra, where the concept of being a ‘string band’ is brought to a higher level. 24

INITIATORS

SABINE MEIJERS

BRENDA DOR-GROOT

Sabine Meijers studied classical harp at The Royal Academy of Music in The Hague and Codarts Academy of Music in Rotterdam, followed by jazz and peformance classes by Park Stickney, Deborah Henson-Conant and Johan Clement, amongst others. Sabine performs a wide variety of musical styles including classical, tango and jazz. She played with several orchestras and choirs, and she regularly plays with smaller ensembles. One of her beloved projects is her own Alba Ensemble. This ensemble juggles and plays with the musical boundaries of the classical instrument the harp, the Hindi tabla and the jazz idiom of saxophone, guitar, bass, and drums. Sabine is a dedicated harp teacher at BplusC Leiden and IALH9Wf[bb[W%Z?@ii[b$I[l[hWbe\^[hijkZ[djiWh[ in specialized talent classes. All of them get to play in ensembles. As a guest teacher and harpist she travels all over the world to many international harpestry events. She is founding board member of the International Jazz Harp Foundation. Brenda Dor-Groot studied classical harp at the coni[hlWjeh_[ie\Hejj[hZWcJ^[D[j^[hbWdZiWdZ9ebe]d[ =[hcWdo$I^[fbWo[Zm_j^j^[;khef[WdKd_edOekj^ Orchestra and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra. Occasionally she still performs classical music, but since 2005 Brenda is actively involved in the world of jazz harp, both in spreading the gospel through the Jazz Harp Foundation and in playing. Brenda is regularly performing solo and in various interesting collaborations. With DJ, she improvises on tracks ranging from lounge to jazz and electronic dance music. Often originating from classical or folky themes made up on the spot, her improvisations with violonist Sietse van Gorkom usually end up rather funky. Brenda is currently specializing in blues playing, and presented her blues tone bending system in progress during a successful performance at the 2011 World Harp Congress in Vancouver. She performs with Brenda’s Real 8bk[i>Whf8WdZieb_ZXeZo[b[Yjh_Y^Whf"]k_jWh"XWii" and drums) and in various jazz settings.
