THE TUNING SPORK EFFORTS TEAM
TOYS & NEEDS 2011 Social Effort Proposal on behalf of the Tuning Spork Efforts Team Latin America As most of you are probably aware Jay Haze and Isis Salvaterra with their Tuning Spork Efforts Team have been carrying out a series of projects helping vulnerable communities around the world with the belief that if each individual does a little bit, the world can be a better place and as much as this may sound utopic to many it does work through collective action. Our team believes that through art we can reach for people and that alone becomes the catalyst for solidarity and political action. The achievements acquired on this thought have improved many lives already as seen in many of our projects, the latest being Red Dot Relief. Forces were joined with the Japanese NGO Peaceboat following Japan’s Tsunami and the result was overwhelming. Music is the answer!
HISTORY Jay Haze, now a resident in Lima‐ Peru, was doing social projects in the community of El Salvador (a slum currently sheltering 500,000 people). As a result of the interaction with the kids and their families in that community, Jay decided to do something in order to offer them a better Christmas by doing an event and bringing the wider community together for such cause. Exposing the idea to Isis Salvaterra, who would later become his Manager, someone who was born in Latin America (Brazil) and growing up in London, graduated in Sociology and Politics with a focus in the Third World, they started to put ideas together on how to generate Toys & Needs to this community and document it. The result was a success and one year later and a few other projects down the line, they are here again to repeat the dose! OUR AIM We are here, for the second year running, to ask you to embark with us on the mission of generating a better Christmas to vulnerable children and their communities around South America, also to generate political awareness to the current situation in the region and above all, show how, with a little bit of good intention and willingness we, as individuals, have the power to make a difference.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? LATIN AMERICANS CHOOSE A COMMUNITY TO HELP IN YOUR CITY On the run up to one week before Christmas several promoters, artists, clubs and any individual willing to volunteer would help generate funds to buy Toys & Needs to a community or any charitable institution of their choice, them being orphanages, Non‐Governmental Organizations, people on the streets, slums, etc. If you do not know where to start please ask us, we have many links in Latin America and can offer some suggestions of communities in need. EUROPE AND THE REST OF THE WORLD FUNDS GENERATED IN OTHER COUNTRIES CAN BE SENT OVER TO A COMMUNITY OF YOUR CHOICE IN LATIN AMERICA Those in the rest of the world wanting to take part you can do the same as above but can then choose which charitable institution you want your donation to go to. Get in touch and we will offer you the profile of the institutions we are offering help to. GENERATE TOYS & NEEDS The donations can be generated from just about any action. Promoting an event, donating an artist fee, spreading collection boxes at an event, collecting toys at the entrance of a club or party, donating a percentage from the door, asking for sponsorship for the event in question or any other idea you can bring up to make it work. Those in the rest of the world wanting to take part you can do the same as above but can then choose which charitable institution you want your donation to go to.
VIDEOS AND PHOTOGRAPHS The Tuning Spork Efforts Team are asking the people that would like to help to be able to document the whole process, prior, during and after the event wherever possible thorough photographs and video. This filmed material will be used to generate political awareness to the region and above all, inspire others to help. The material will be exposed through all means available to us in our industry including websites, blogs, magazines, facebook pages and so on. Emphasis will also be given to the promotion, clubs, artists and workers involved in the effort.
