Messages

The past year has been another exciting one for Junior Achievement of Waterloo Region. We continue our commitment to build relationships with individuals and companies that recognize the value JA brings to our community. The Board has been proud to support Aubrey and her team in their effort to grow Junior Achievement’s presence as one of the local organizations contributing to Waterloo Region’s local economy. By grooming future leaders and philanthropists, we lay the foundation needed to ensure this area continues to have a strong and diversified economic base. JA delivers on our promise to help local youth experience the excitement of running a business, understanding how to manage their personal finances and learning what will be expected of them when they enter the workplace. Our Christie JA Tech Camp is an example of how we innovate our program offerings in ways that appeal to today’s youth. We change the life of every participant in positive ways. Our staff, Aubrey, and both the Board of Directors and Board of Governors look forward to growing our financial performance and are dedicated to building a bigger and better future for Junior Achievement.

As our local economy continues to be driven forward by innovative and creative entrepreneurs, Junior Achievement’s role in fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs has never been more critical than it is today. Every year we foster the belief in our youth that they can realize their dreams – they can dare to take risks, and that launching their own business isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. We made some significant changes to our programs this year to better nurture and develop young people so that they can be successful and contributing citizens in our community - and quite possibly future entrepreneurs, business and community leaders. Changes to our programs included moving the Sun Life Student Company Program to new creative spaces like TheMuseum and Conestoga College’s Entrepreneurship Centre. We unveiled the Christie JA Tech Camp where campers learned how to build a business around a techbased product and redoubled our efforts to ensure that every senior public school student in the region experiences our essential life skills program, Economics for Success. We look forward to this new academic year. Our volunteers and students are a joy to work with.

ABOUT JA

Junior Achievement of Waterloo Region (JA) is a social profit organization that delivers work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy programs to local students in Waterloo Region. For over 40 years, JA together with our business, education and government partners, has empowered young people to own their economic success. Last year alone, 9,000 students benefited from JA programs, delivered by 475 dedicated business volunteers. These volunteers provided over 7,000 hours of instructional time. 4 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF WATERLOO REGION INC.

GRADES 9 & 10

JA Titan is more than just a game. It’s an interactive experience. As a realistic online simulation, JA Titan challenges students to navigate the dynamic changes of our technology-driven global marketplace. The new online version now allows for advanced levels of play, hiring of new staff, and sub-decisions for Marketing and R&D. (Student Reach 1,114)

GRADES 9 – 12

Company Program - A Student Venture inspires high school students to understand the role of business in our society by creating an enterprise of their own. By collaborating with professional volunteer consultants to design, organize and operate a real business, students experience how a small enterprise functions. (In School Student Reach 64; After School 142) This program is offered as an in-class project for Grades 11 & 12 and as a very rewarding after-school program where students in grades 9 - 12 collaborate with others from across the Region’s high schools.

Our programs are designed to deliver on three educational pillars: Financial Literacy, Work Readiness and Entrepreneurship. JA is the successful link between education and the business community, giving youth the confidence and knowledge they need to define personal success, enhance their workforce readiness and pursue their dreams. JA inspires youth to make informed, educated and knowledgeable financial decisions, start companies, develop career plans and express their innovative spirit.

Tech Camp

The idea of teaching youth how to build a business model around tech based products began as a conversation between Iain Klugman, President and CEO of Communitech and Aubrey Walters, President and CEO of Junior Achievement. The idea was brought to life by JA and in August of 2012, 20 local youth attended our first tech camp and were mentored by local industry experts.
