LETTER OF INTEREST My name is Javier González Castillo, I am 24 years old and I am currently developping my Final Project Degree in the ETSAB (Barcelona) in the last year of my studies. To date, I have always been particularly interested in heritage conservation and landscape. This is the reason why my Final Projet is related to these thematic focuses. I am a motivad and dynamic person, always trying to know new places and cultures around the world. In 2014-15 I received an Erasmus scolarship to study one year at UdeM (Université de Montréal). This not only allowed me to study abroad but allowed me to travel and see Canada and USA, meet different architectures and new people. So much so that this experience aroused in me the pleasure to participate in architecture competitions and workshops around the world, in addition to increase my team work skills. At professional level, this was a great opportunity to think the architecture with other perspectives, approach projects in different ways and try to improve the complexity of the project. It also contributed to my personal growth. Thus, thanks to the training I have acquired in these two universities from different cultures and countries, I have good knowledge in terms of housing, rehabilitation and planning. Indeed, work and study with people who belong to different cultures has increased my working abilities in team and other skills such as the adaptation to different environments. It also allowed me to acquire and consolidate several qualities such as perseverance, discipline, resolution and self-evaluation. This concern about see the world and knowing new cultures arouses in me a special interest on working in different projects and scales, learn new construction techniques and work methodologies.

Yours sincerely, Javier Gonzalez Castillo

PROJECTS

MONTRÉAL AUDITORIUM VIGER 2015-16 | PROJECT STUDIO VIII | PROFESSOR: ALFRED LINARES + EVA GÓMEZ

Deep in a wooded landscape in the densest area of the city of Montréal, I propose the project of an auditorium. This will be immersed among the trees, as if it were one more. Working with full and empty, the intention is to frame different visual different and bring the forest into the building. The project is composed by of three pieces. The first one (showroom) is half buried in the ground, wanting to be the root of the tree. The second part (auditorium) materializes on the surface, as if the litter coming away the tree. The third (toy library-bar) floats on the two previous pieces as if the tree’s foliage. This is a volume which provides protection and creates a binding between the two volumes mentioned above. As spaces are crossed, the person experiences different sensory emotions, the result of the effects of light and shadows of foliage.

PROJECTS

MONTRÉAL + CHRISTOPHER DUBÉ KARL ROBERT

HALTE CITADINE 2014-15 | PROJECT STUDIO VI | PROFESSOR: JACQUES LACHAPELLE + RICHARD DE LA RIVA

The project addresses the building of the Canada Malting, a dominant figure in the Canal Lachine, which is characterized by their Silos. As a heritage conservation project, the elements to retain go beyond the material; sensory environments offer a unique architectural experience. This diversity of mood reflects the history of the place, by its industrial past, its abandonment and ruin period and misappropriation. The program responds to the diverse needs of the neighborhood, such as workspaces, homes, shops, an entertainment venue, and public spaces. A central axis passing through the mill and silos, street channel, invites users to enter and explore the site. Around this axis are distributed to the public characters programs, common areas and vertical circulations.

PROJECTS

MONTRÉAL RÉSISTANCE 2014-15 | PROJECT STUDIO V | PROFESSOR: FREDÉRIC DUBÉ + VINCENT LAJOIE-PILON

This project is composed of a large program (collective housing, subway, office, nursery and Fab-Lab), among which the Fab-Lab stands out. It is a circular building that creates activity and distributes large part of the program from a spiral ramp. So we could talk about a new way of using energy, both physical as human, since this ramp absorbs automobile flow and distribute it to the three lower levels of parking. The ramp also absorb the pedestrian flow and distribute it to the upper floors, where there are workshops and two passages that connect the Fab-Lab with offices and dwellings. We are thus faced with a new and different way to access to thw dwelling blocks (in addition to access to the ground floor.

PROJECTS

MONTMELÓ LINKER PAVILION 2015-16 | PROJECT STUDIO VII | PROFESSOR: ALFRED LINARES

The project addresses the issue of Montmeló ‘rail box’, which crosses the city and split in two. By inserting a pavilion it’s pretended to join two critical areas from the activity generated in this pavilion. The activity will be associated to the new public space. On the one hand, the ‘rail box’ will no longer be a mass of concrete and act as an avenue, connecting the building to the train station. On the other hand, the creation of an urban park will mark the start and the end of the building path. The program, distributed in three buildings, contains study rooms and team work boxes, a library, some show rooms and workshops.

PROJECTS

ROQUETES LA TRAVESÍA 2015-16 | URBANISM V | PROFESSOR: JULIÁN GALINDO + EVA BAKKE

The area of intervenction is Roquetes, a neighborhood in the periphery of Barcelona. Due to its high density and difficult topography, we opted for a small intervention capable of generate life and introduce new activity in the neighborhood. We focused in the area the most closely to the mountain beacuse its landscape possibilities. The project strategy is to link two different subway lines by walking. Throughout this, we have three new buildings that will generate a different activity. Thus, one of the buildings act on a metropolitan scale (auditorium and library), while another of them act locally (workshops and houses). The third building will have shops and have a direct connection to the underground (metro).

PROJECTS

POTSDAM POTSDAM LINE 2013-14 | URBANISM IV | PROFESSOR: FRANCESC BACARDIT + PERE TOMÀS VADELL

This urban renovation project is located in the small town of Potsdam (Berlin). By creating new buildings, long and continuous façades, it is pretended to strength the presence of tram that connects Potsdam with Berlin city center. Generating a linear organic route, a new public space as space is created. This new space relates several buildings (institutional, commercial, residential) and increase social and cultural mixity. The housing blocks are composed by ground floor + 4 floors, in order to respect the existing urban context.

PROJECTS

HOSPITALET DEL LLOBREGAT DWELLINGS 160H 2013-14 | PROJECTES IV | PROFESSOR: ANTONI UBACH + PERE TOMÀS VADELL

This project is located in Hospitalet, a dense urban fabric in the city of Barcelona. To comply with the urban context, the project aims to combine different types of housing: one side we proposed the construction of houses to deal with the small-scale, which is east of the site. On the other side, we built two blocks 3 and 5 floors of apartments to deal with the larger scale. Between the blocks and maisonettes we just proposed the creation of an urban park which aims to act as transitional element between the two scales, which would also increase social mixity.

PROJECTS

HOSPITALET DEL LLOBREGAT DWELLINGS 120B 2013-14 | PROJECTES III | PROFESSOR: ANTONI UBACH + PERE TOMÀS VADELL

The project is located in two industrial wastelands. This type of housing is composed by four appartment per floor (2 appartment measuring 120 m2 and 2 appartments measuring 60 m2). Big appartments have double circulations, concentring the activitiy around the living-room. Little appartments are simplier and the rooms are connected one to each other by a central corridor. The volumes proposed also seeks to create new passages wich would generate, at the same time, a new public space from the activities that take place in the new buildings.

COMPETITION

AMSTERDAM SPONGY PIER 2016 | ARCHMEDIUM COMPETITION

Games are the highest form of research” - Albert Einstein. This building is not just a children playschool but a energy sponge. All people can develop all kind of activies having fun from the sea and the fresh air. Even the importance of constructing a playschool for kids, the most important point of the project is the relation between the human, ther water and the patios (the place where this relation can be possible).

COMPETITION

DETROIT ASSEMBLY LINE 2015 | ARCHMEDIUM COMPETITION + LORENZA CRAMER ANA M. HERNÁNDEZ JORDI JORBA

“Architecture as a possible answer to socioeconomic, demographic and cultural phenomena”. This proposal is not a building, it is a living organism. The same way as Henry Ford did at the XXth century, we propose here a cycle: an assembly line. The interactions between the building and its surroundings, as well as inside the building represent indeed the Henry Ford’s diagram made shape.

COMPETITION

HOSPITALET DEL LLOBREGAT 2013 | HIC COMPETITION

+ PERE TOMÀS VADELL

This was a restricted competition for the third-year students. The aim consisted in designing a new tipology for the residental buildings of Bellvitge. Our proposal focused on the accesibility problems. We drilled on the ground-floors’ stores whereby we could acces to the parking by a ramp instead two useless stairs. We also did some changes in the composition of the façades and some little distribuition change inside the dwellings.

WORKSHOP

VANDELLÓS AKIYA 2016 | PROFESSOR: MIQUEL VIDAL + IRIE MASAYUKI + LEILA AKECH ARATA SUZUKI KIE TANAKA

The main idea of the project is to give an answer and continue the professor Irie intervenction by a new route which respects the volumes-masies, as well as that suggests a promenade that allows to the visitor the exploration and the discovery of new spaces and relation between volumes. To achieve with this idea, we use some metalic elements to guide the people trought the route. These elements are not only artistic but also architectural and they contain an specific function in a way of urban equipment.

MODELING

BARCELONA TORRE BELLESGUARD 2013

The construction process of the model is carried out from the generation of different roof sections. The difficulty of this model is how to solve the union between the two facades , ie , in the corner. The solution is to build a formwork on small pieces of wood to subsequently apply a bead of caulk in order to cover the corner. Once putty thoroughly dry , one or two coats of paint is applied.
