An Overview of Dental Care Services
Dental Health A visit to the dentist can be daunting to some people but adequate patient education can alleviate some of the anxiety. Though most dental visits involve routine cleaning and maintenance, sometimes serious problems can arise that are beyond the ordinary. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the most serious dental conditions
Tooth Decay Tooth decay is caused by acid created from plaque build up on teeth. This can be very problematic because when one tooth decays it is likely that those around it will as well. The tooth is treated by removing the decay. For minor tooth decay a simple filling is used on the area, for more serious decay, a crown Is fitted over the tooth. Very serious problems that include damage to the root may require a root canal.
Cosmetic Problems Cosmetic dentistry is used to improve the overall look of teeth. This can often involve a vaneer which is a thin layer of material put over a tooth to improve its aesthetic appearance. Vaneers can be used to fix discolouration, gaps in teeth and cracked teeth. Cosmetic dentistry also involves laser whitening of teeth.
Cusp Fractures Cusp fractures are cracks in teeth. They often occur near old fillings. Treatment usually requires a removal of an old filling and the addition of a new filling. Sometimes a crown may be needed as well. More serious fractures may even require a root canal
Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease is a serious condition that some dental patients experience. It is an infection that takes place in the gums and bone surrounding teeth. It occurs due to improper cleaning of teeth that allows bacteria builds up in the pockets Between teeth and gums. The early stage of periodontal disease is called Gingivitis and this point, proper dental treatment can avoid further destruction. After this stage, bacteria can start to destroy gum tissue and bone ligaments.
Missing Tooth (Teeth) If a tooth or multiple teeth are missing, it is important that a dentist address the area, for two reason, the first being that the area will begin to experience bone loss and the second being that the adjacent teeth may drift into the empty space. Treatments used to address a missing tooth are bridges or implants.
Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars at the back of your teeth. They usually begin to show in the late teens or early twenties. If wisdom teeth are misaligned and they are angled awkwardly, they need to be removed. This is because misaligned wisdom teeth can contribute to crowding in the mouth. Wisdom teeth are usually extracted after they have erupted out of the gum, using some form of anaesthetic.
Preventative Preventative care is very important in avoiding most the more serious dental conditions. This involves proper instructions on how to brush and floss and maintaining this regiment at least twice a day. Patients should also visit the dentist for periodical cleanings and check-ups.
