Welcome


Hello I am Jasper Verbeke, a 20 year old student of Ghent University. I am currently in my final year of the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design Engineering Technology, with a Master of Science in the same field of study upcoming. During the past three years, I have had the opportunity to boost my engineering skills as well as my design skills. In this portfolio, I would like to showcase you myself, the skills I’ve learned and some projects I realised.

I am the kind of person who really likes to learn new skills. On the other hand I also challenge myself to develop my skills so they can help me improve my work. During the past three years, I developed skills like product sketching, prototyping, use of several programs and so on. In the next few pages, you can find a summary of the skills I was pleased to learn and improve.

Sketching Information

Starting from paper and moving on to digital platforms, productsketching was well integrated in all design courses. Sketching can be very useful when iterating on several ideas and also further in design for making a final product sketch.

Prototyping Information

To realise a functional model of my ideas, I learned a lot of new prototyping skills. With prototyping you mostly can test fairly quick and easy if an idea will pay out or not. So during the proces, you can make quick adjustments where needed.

Rendering Information

To implement a CAD/computer model in a context, a full blown render might do the trick. Ofcourse, a basic knowledge about computer graphics is needed. The software I am used to work with is Autodesk VRED Pro.

Adobe CC Information

For further graphical work, such as photo editting or poster design, I use Adobe Creative Cloud. Within Adobe CC, the five main programs I use are Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Lightroom and Premiere Pro, depending on what I want to achieve.

Photography Information

Once a project is completed, a nice product photo is welcome. Because of that reason, I bought myself a starters DSLR camera with which I try experimenting in different situations now and then. Afterwards, I put some of the taken pictures in lightroom to tweak some final settings. (all pictures on the title pages are also self-shot)

The upcoming pages will show you my favorite project of each academic year of the past three years. The projects include both design and engineering. At the end there are also two pages with two personal projects I realised next to school where I implemented the knowledge and techniques I learned at school.

Felt in the office Information

In our first year, we got the task to design a felt object in the office area. I came up with the idea of making a wearable which could serve as a portable storage space for your reading glasses and some pens. With a clip, it can easily clip on to your belt. I never used felt before, so learning the possibilities of a new material was a great learning school for me. The whole prototype is made out of one scheet of felt, except the small insert to devide the inside space in two compartments.

Plastic cyclone Information

Ofcourse there is also the engineering side of my field of study. During the second year, we had a course called ‘Multidisciplinairy engineering project’, where we had to develop a machine that was able to seperate two to three different plastics. Together with four other students, we wanted to use a different technique than most of the other people (who used some chemical solutions to make use of the density of different plastics). We, on the other hand, got our inspiration from the dyson vacuum cleaners and came up with the idea of making a wind cyclone. Also making use of the density of the particles, we were able to seperate them with a high efficiency without having to deal with chemical waste afterwards. It was a proces of much trial and error and asked everything out of my engineering skills but eventually, we managed to pull it off. The airflow had to be perfect and the shape of our cone had to be spot on, but it worked just fine.

MPC Controller Information

Here, the task was to redesign an existing product to increase its lifespan or durability, making use of additive manufacturing. MPC controller is a modular, 3D printed game controller. Depending on the platform and game, you can change the configuration of the controller and add or delete the needed modules. Broken modules are easy and cheaper to replace than current controllers.

Side projects Information

Next to school, I also like to do some personal projects. During the last year, I made my own portable photobooth to do some small product photography and I also made my own sound reactive LED strip using my arduino and solder skills.

The photobooth is completely made out of lasercut multiplex. It can easily be broken down with the use of slider connections to transport it anywhere. It makes use of an A2 sheet of paper to form the canvas. By using two A4 format sheets of paper at the sides, you have the possibility to create diffuse light with any light source you have available.

The sound reactive LED strip makes use of an arduino UNO board, a sound sensor, some transistors and ofcourse a LED strip. I have written several programs for several functions and colors. I learned using arduino because of a course in the second year, where we had to make a self driving car. Projects
