WELCOME Dear friends and allies, On behalf of the Jasper Pride Festival Society and presenting sponsor, TD Bank, we would like to extend a warm welcome to the 9th annual Jasper Pride Festival. Jasper Pride is so much more than a festival. It’s a feeling. An atmosphere. A shared understanding that everyone is welcome exactly as they are. In our little mountain town, we don’t just celebrate Pride during the festival, we celebrate being Proud and Free 365 days a year! It is our mission to create a safe space of equality and acceptance for the LGBTQA2+ community. We strive to provide an atmosphere where everyone feels embraced by their surroundings and shares a sense of community. From our decorated streets and business windows, to our inclusive ‘Jasper family’, we’re sure you’ll feel right at home. So friends...let’s get this party started!

Time to eat your heart out with our new food tours, test your sense of adventure with the abundance of outdoor activities, enjoy family and teen pride events and live it up in the evening at all the parties. And not to be missed, the signature pride party “Under the Big Top” at the Jasper Activity Centre on Saturday, April 21. For the details on all of the events happening over the next four days, check out the pages in this book or visit jasperpride.ca. As always, a jam-packed festival like this can’t happen without the incredible and generous support of our local and national sponsors listed in this guide. We are forever grateful for their contributions. We hope you have a fabulous time celebrating Proud & Free here in Jasper! Cody Murdock & Lynn Wannop, Co-Chairs Jasper Pride Festival Society

A Family Outing is the story of Ruby’s experiences, a memoir about discovering gay great-uncles and learning about their lives. It is about operating spotlights at a drag queen show, and about marching in Pride Parades. Billie Zizi was born on April 4th 1989 in dusty Edmonton, Alberta to a fiddle player (Cam Neufeld) and an abstract painter (Marianne Watchel). Taught to live and breathe art from a young age, Zizi took notes from her father on music-making and learnt how to paint from her mother. After high school, Zizi went to Grant MacEwan University for music, graduating in 2009. Zizi has traveled the world—living, working, and traveling through West Africa, Asia, Europe. In 2010, she did a busking tour with her father that began in Turkey, moved through Eastern Europe, and ended in France where they attended Samois, a festival in celebration of Django Reinhardt

Ruby Swanson

Michael Flisak

Ruby Swanson’s life changed when her sixteenyear-old son walked to her office, closed the door, and with his hand still on the doorknob said, “I’m gay.” Despite her initial reaction of shock, fear, and denial, Ruby became a public advocate for equality and acceptance of the LGBT community.

Michael first trained at the Victoria College of Art in the late 70s and early 80s. He later studied in Quebec at Laval University and, more recently (2005) attended a Thematic Residency at the Banff Centre. Michael has a background in Figurative as well as Abstract disciplines. He has been teaching life drawing and painting since 1980. A resident of Jasper (on and off) since 1977, Michael is a founding member of JAG.

Catch her at: Book Reading & Signing

A Family Outing is the story of Ruby’s experiences. She addresses the deeply homophobic time in which baby boomers grew up, the emergence of the gay rights movement, and how the AIDS epidemic transformed the LGBT landscape.
