From The Desk Of The Potentate-Elect Nobles & Ladies, February has been a fantastic month but I have to say the most momentous time for us was the birth of our newgrandson. Michael Justin Fox II arrived on Feb. 10. at 2:20 pm, weighing in at 7 lbs. 12 and a half ozs. (Our newest Shriner-to-be). Congratulations to exhausted but happy Michael and Erin. We started off February with a trip to Sacramento for Ben Ali’s presentation of officers. Lady Judy and I were accompanied by A.R. Michael and Bailey the Pote’s dog. The dinner and company were great! Ben Ali puts on a fantastic show!

The Grand Master’s Ladies Appreciation Night turned out wonderfully. We had a great turnout and thanks to our own “in house chef” Cody, we had a fabulous meal. Thank you also to our incredible bar staff, Rod and Bobby. The band was fantastic and our Rainbow Girls and Job’s Daughters did an absolutely great job of serving and cleaning up. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a successful event.

I have had the pleasure of visiting several of our local Blue Lodges in the past few months. I have been warmly welcomed and would suggest that if you haven’t attended recently it is a very worthwhile experience. Certainly helps to rekindle the flame of brotherhood.

The Circus Kick-Off party is March 7 and as always we’re hoping to see everyone there. I know Cindy and Bill have a great dinner planned. As you all know the Circus is the big fund raiser for your Temple and we really need everyone’s participation! The Circus is March 21, 22, and 23 so be sure and keep those days available on your calendar.

Our annual St. Patrick’s Day corned beef and cabbage, Jigs and Maggie Dinner is Sat. March 15. Please RSVP by March 8 to get your reservation and a free drink token. Happy Hour 5:30, Dinner 6:30. Looking forward to a big turnout for this one. Cost is $16.00 per person. Dress is GREEN and there will be prizes for the best GREEN FINERY.

Divan meeting is on March 19 at 6:00pm. Stated Meeting is on March 26 (Happy Birthday, Michael Fox), at 5:30 happy hour, 6:30 dinner, meeting to follow. Dinner will be spaghetti, salad, garlic french bread and desert. Please RSVP by March 21. Dinner will be $12.00 per person. You will get a free drink token for each dinner only if you RSVP.

I have ordered raffle tickets for the Champagne Balloon Ride which Allen Anderson has generously donated for a second time. Should have the tickets before the stated meeting so if you didn’t win last time you have a second chance. The Temple would really appreciate it if every Noble, who is able, would try to sell at least one ticket to a friend or family member.

We are going to have a Joint Ceremonial during Eurofest at the Sands, May 30, 31 and June 1. Plans are in the works but be sure and save the dates. Try and invite a friend to join!

On that note I would like to add a quote from a brother Mason, (one of my favorites), Henry Ford. “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

Shriner’s Legacy Program

Show pride in your legacy.

Membership starts here.

For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition. From one generation to the next, Shriners have enjoyed a unique brotherhood and shared in an important mission.

Phase 1 – New Members

The Shriners Legacy Program is a way to show your pride in being a Shriner and to celebrate your part in the special brotherhood that comes from membership. The Shriners Legacy Program is open to any male family member* related to a Shriner, including: • Fathers • Grandfathers • Brothers • Sons • Grandsons • Nephews

• Uncles • In-laws

Be a part of special Legacy events. Temples will be encouraged to host Legacy nights to honor members of the program. Legacy members in all generations will be invited to participate in a variety of fun events and activities with their family members and fellow nobles.

Wear your Legacy pin with pride. To show our gratitude for you and your family continuing the Shriners legacy, Shriners International has designed an elegant gold pin that showcases your pride in your Shriners heritage. The Shriners Legacy pin will become available in two phases.

Shriners International will provide new members of the fraternity with complimentary Legacy Program pins if they meet the following criteria: • The member must have joined after October 17, 2011. • He must also be a part of a Shriners legacy, meaning that one or more of his relatives (either living or deceased) is/was a Shriner. New members will also need to fill out a Legacy Program application at www.shrinersvillage.com. Upon review and acceptance of the application he will receive a complimentary pin for himself, and a pin for up to two additional Shriners Legacy family members who have signed his petition.

Phase 2 – Existing Legacies Beginning January 1, 2012 the Legacy Program Pin will become available to current Shriners who are part of a legacy for a $5 contribution†. While all Shriner family members may purchase a pin, each member must fill out a separate application at www.shrinersvillage.com. The application for current members will be available online January 1, 2012. Shriners International appreciates your role in building and continuing its legacy. For more information about the Shriners Legacy Program please visit www.shrinersvillage.com

First Lady’s Project

Make a Difference in a Childs’s Life. Investment Opportunity

Pediatric Burn Program Rehabilitation includes Occupational and Physical Therapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, and Compression Garments and Masks

Average Costs for Compression Therapy Two face masks = $150

Two pairs of gloves = $240

Life-saving, life-changing healthcare Since April 1997, the Shriners regional pediatric medical center in Sacramento has been making dreams come true for children and families faced with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns. More than 53,000 children have sought the specialized pediatric care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospital and all services are provided without regard for a family’s ability to pay. While children come for different reasons, all are welcomed into an interdisciplinary community of care that nurtures the patient and family in mind, body and spirit.

Pediatric Burn Program Parents of children who have suffered a burn injury turn to Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Northern California for the gift of hope. In most cases, the referral for care is comes directly from emergency first responders or the team at a medical trauma center or emergency department. Once the child and the family arrive, the seeds of hope begin to germinate in the hands of the expert team at Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Northern California. Our burn surgeons lead a multidisciplinary team focused on maximizing the cosmetic and functional outcomes of children. The team includes reconstructive plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and psychologists, burn technicians, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, pharmacists, child life specialists, school teachers, and orthotists and prosthetists. All care includes aggressive therapy and emotional support – both for the child and his or her family. During 2013, the Pediatric Burn Program admitted more than 350 new patients, half of whom were admitted for critical, life-threatening injuries. Close to 700 surgeries were performed by the team and more than 13,000 occupational and physical therapy treatments were completed. Overall total patient days in the Pediatric Burn Program were up 9.0%. "The advanced care we provide to children cannot be topped. Not only do the doctors provide expert care, but there is a large team that provides all that is necessary for children to go back home in the best shape possible." -- David Greenhalgh, MD, FACS

Two paris of pants = $246 Two vests = $246

First Lady of KERAK for 2014 Each burn injury is unique with some costing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat. The average cost for a day of nursing care in the ICU is $6,500, not including costs for surgery, pharmacy, nutritional services, or occupational and physical therapy. The promise of a life filled with hope is priceless and worthy of personal and community investment. Impact of Your Investment Each dollar contributed to the First Lady of KERAK project is an investment in real hope. Every contributor can be proud of providing children suffering with burn injuries with everything they need to return and stay home, with their families, and to return to the real job of every child – to strive for a future of independence and achievement. 

2013 First Lady’s Project Check Presentation Nobles and Ladies: On Monday January 27, 2014 it was my pleasure, as your First Lady in 2013, to present a check to the Board of Directors of the Shriners Hospital for Children of Northern California in the amount of $16,184.71. This check will provide needed equipment for the Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Lab. I had the opportunity to meet with the folks who work in the lab, they are a wonderfully talented and dedicated group of people. They wanted me to be sure and thank Kerak Shriners for this much needed donation. I would like to thank everyone for their generosity and help with this most worthwhile project. Kerak Shrine Fundraiser

BUY YOUR GROCERIES AT SAVE MART AND HELP FUND THE TEMPLE

Kerak Shrine has been accepted into the S.H.A.R.E.S. fundraising program. They have sent us plastic cards to be used at Save-mart and Lucky stores. Twice a year they will issue a check to Kerak Shrine for approximately 3% of our eligible purchases. I know that this has been a good fundraiser for Ben Ali. They have been participating for some time now. The cards will be available at our stated meetings and in the office. If anyone is unable to pick one up please give a call to Howard in the office or myself and we will mail them out. All you have to do is present your card to the cashier prior to payment. It doesn’t cost you anything but will earn money for your Temple. The card is issued to the organization and no personal information is needed or stored. Anyone that shops can use the card to earn S.H.A.R.E.S. points so we can share the cards with family and friends. For additional information you can contact me or visit the website at http://www.savemart.com/. Please help us to make this a successful fund raiser for Kerak Temple.

Dear Nobles, Just a reminder if you are thinking about joining Lady Cheryl & I on our ‘Magic of Alaska’ cruise in August, the deadline to receive the ‘Early Booking Discount and ‘Free Medical Cancellation Insurance’ is fast approaching. As our group approaches 60 passengers, I encourage any Nobles who are planning on joining Lady Cheryl & I to reserve your trip before 28th February 2014. I urge you not to miss out on the ‘Early Booking Discount & complimentary Medical Cancellation Insurance’, these inclusions represent a value of some $250 to $300 plus per person. Wrecking Crew Fellow Crew Members and Nobles, Thank you to each Crew member for allowing me the honor and pleasure of serving as your Director for 2014. I have some very big shoes to fill by following our 2013 Director, Jim Arnold, who did an outstanding job keeping us “on track” all year. I hope to be able to “lean” on him for advice and support, along with long-time Crew Secretary, John Little. Their knowledge and experience pertaining to Crew activities just might be enough to keep “Boxcar” from derailing during the year. Not too many years back, the Crew always met at the same eatery each month, with an occasional change of restaurants sprinkled in here and there throughout the year. In recent years, the Crew has been meeting in a different place each month. This seems to be well accepted by the members, and we hope to continue this for the year. Speaking for the Crew, I would like to pledge our support to our 2014 Potentate, Illus. Sir Gene Fox and his Divan. We are looking forward to many fun activities in kerak’s quest to help “our kids”. At our meeting in January, a sign-up sheet was passed around for the Crew members present to volunteer for participating in the Circus. It was comforting to note the number who signed up. Even though this is being written before the Crew’s February meeting, I am sure the list will again be available there for anyone who may have missed our previous meeting. If you were unable to attend the January and February meetings, please call Dr. Bobby Hall to have your name added, we need everyone who has the time and the ability to help Chief Rabban Bill Earnhardt have a successful circus. Thanks again, my friends--I look forward to seeing you at our meeting on March 27, Littlejohn will be sending out the meeting location later this month. For the Crew, Boxcar

Klowns Joeys, The Klown Yoonit’s February meeting was held at the Wigwam Restaurant in beautiful downtown Fernley. Naturally, the top topic was the Circus, coming to Reno later this month. Preparations and details were discussed to be certain we are ready when the circus starts on Friday the 21st. In years past, we have always had great participation from the Joeys at the Circus. We do hope to see this continue this year as well. It’s gratifying to see the clowns out in good numbers to entertain he kids and to support Chief Rabban Mike Earnhardt and the Temple. Let’s face it, a circus wouldn’t be a circus without a bunch of clowns. Something to think about: Illus. Sir Gene Fox has a Ceremonial tentatively set for June. Now would be the time to get some of your Blue Lodge brothers to petition for membership in Kerak, and encourage them to consider joining our Yoonot. They do not have to wait until June;they can join now and participate in the Ceremonial in June. Speaking of June, there will be a Carson Valley Days Parade in early June, followed by the Reno Rodeo Parade a couple of weeks later. So, if any of you are building a new ride for the parades, you’ll have just a little more than two months after the Circus to get ‘er done and join us in the parades this year. At this writing, the March Klown meeting has not yet been set. Please call either Day-Day or Duffel Bag for the time and place, we need your input and your help for the circus.

Membership Booth at the Circus As Shriners we all know that we have to be Freemasons before we can become Shriners. In order for us to have more Shriners we must build our Fraternity as a whole. That’s why we are having a membership booth at the Kerak Shrine Circus. I invite you to come help acquire members for you lodge and your Temple. We would like to extend this invitation to all Lodges and all officers weather you are a Shriner or not. For more information contact our membership Chair: Membership@KerakShrine.com
