April 2013

Richard Hawkins, Potentate Lady Carol 775-424-6454

Thank you, thank you, thank you, one and all for all your hard work at the Circus! In March we had a very busy month; first was the Circus Kick-off party it was great thanks to all the hard work of Gene & Judy Fox. We had our first screening clinic of the year in Carson City, thank you Bob & Jan Pohlman. Then we had a great Jiggs & Maggie dinner celebrating St. Patricks Day. The dinner was excellently prepared by chef “Cody O’Conway”….thank you Cody! As I am writing this article the Circus has not yet happened, but I’m sure it will be a great success. I know how hard Gene & Judy Fox have worked hard to make this a wonderful Circus, and with the help of everyone I know it will happen. We also will have had our March stated meeting; a wine tasting party. At this party we put out the information regarding our trip to the wine country. I’m hopefull that many of you will sign up for this trip, it promises to be a lot of fun! If you’d like more information or reservation forms, please call the Temple office and the Recorder can help you, or call the First Lady Carol (775) 424-6454. While we are on the subject of trips, I’m very sorry to say that I am cancelling our trip to Texas. So far we have had only 8 people request reservation forms. We needed more than that, so I don’t think we will reach the magic number of 30 by May 1st. I’m sure it would have been a fun trip. We will see what we can do in place of that trip, so watch the Kourier for more information. April….ah spring is in the air! Two big events, first the Potentate’s Ball, Saturday April 13th at the Temple, we will have a big band….really a big 18 piece band. This ball was requested by many of you, so I hope you will all participate! See the flyer in this issue of the Kourier for reservation information. Second we have WSA in Albuquerque NM, Wednesday April 23rd thru Sunday April 28th. I checked the mileage and it is 1025 miles from my home to the hotel. To fly is way too expensive, so Carol and I have decided to drive. We will leave Sparks/Reno on Sunday April 21st, arriving in Albuquerque Monday night April 22nd. If anyone is interested in traveling with us, please let me know. I would like to thank those of you who helped man the information table at the Circus, good job! How many of you met “Fez Head Fred” at the Circus? He is our membership mascot and is currently helping Jasper Jacobs (our Membership Chairman) and Michael Fox in Kerak’s recruitment efforts. And Fez Head Fred wants to know if you will also help? Our goal this year is to increase our membership, and communication is probably one of the most important things we can do to help achieve that goal. I am open to talk to anyone at any time about anything that will help us prosper. So please feel free to contact me at home (775) 424-6454 or thru the Temple (775) 856-3330. I will be in my office most Tuesday’s and others days as requested. So come and see me! By the way, how are you doing on recruiting new members? Sure hope someone takes me up on my offer to pay their dues for next year! There is an application for membership in this issue of the Kourier, as well as a reservation form for the Joint Ceremonial May 31, June 1st & June 2nd, at the Sands Hotel in Reno. Don’t forget to carry your pocket applications! You just never know who you might happen to meet. Speaking of Fez’s, it is what separates us from the rest of the world! Wear it with pride, and wear it often! Kids are our sunshine! Yours in the Faith,

Dick Hawkins, Potentate, Kerak Shriners

. . . aND oN the seveNth Day he createD clowNs Joeys And Nobles, Tooter is having some eye surgery and I’ll make an attempt to pass on some information to you and try not to totally put you all to sleep. He says right now he has to keep looking down and has acquired a special chair to help him. Hopefully next month we’ll be back to normal. The year is moving along quickly. We’re already in to March and the faster we go the faster things seem to move. The Klowns are as of this publication scheduled to work on our first screening in Carson on March 16th, 2013 at the Carson Surgical Center. This is a fun event for everyone involved and helps put the patients and their families in a good frame of mind. This is a serious event for all involved. As everyone knows this is this is the first step to identifying our kids that we can help at the Shrine Hospital. This is also where we start the relationships that are rewarding for all involved. We thank God for the medical doctors and staff and all involved that help support this event. Next on the table is the Klown meeting on the 18th of March. Boomer has graciously offered to help us all learn to become better balloon makers. This should prove to be a great and fun session and just in time for the upcoming Circus on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of March. Our next meeting after the Circus is as always on the third Monday, which is April 15th. Hopefully by this time we’ll know more about upcoming screenings and we’ll start to narrow our requirements for the upcoming parades. We look forward to all getting together to recap our fun events at the Circus. I’ll prepare some chow and hopefully no one leaves hungry. Keep having lots of fun, Bubba

wreckiNg crew The circus is over and done for another year. Many thanks to all the crew that gave their time and labors to help out. It was a pleasure to see a few familiar faces that were not able to attend last year but were back to help out this year as well as the many who are always there. Thanks again guys and their ladies. A special thanks to the Chief Elf, John, who once again arranged for the annual Saturday of the Circus Breakfast for any and all of the workers who showed up at Carrows. Some of the things coming up that we are working on are the 2nd section of the joint ceremonial end of May, Fathers day breakfast and raffle in partnership with The Stagecraft, and the Potes OV in July. Thanks goes out to Carlos and Luisa for opening their restuarant in the evening just for our Wrecking crew meeting in Feburary, and to Famous Daves for our March meet. We invite any of the nobles who would like to have some fun and enjoy a dinner with adult libations to join us on the 4th Thursday of the month. Santa

kerak karavaNers Hi everyone, hoping this message arrives to you on time before our meeting at Louis Basque Corner. This time I will be protected by Obama’s people down by the baseball park.  The Beach people also agreed to help, only if I would toast a Peacon or two at  the bar. Well, I will buy the first round. Remember the time will be at 4:00PM not 1:00PM. Louis opens at 4:00PM that day. So cocktails at 4:00PM dinner at 5:00PM. If you have to park by that brick building in the alley, watch your step, the ground has small holes. I have a few raffle prizes, and roses for the ladies. Now is the time to get rid of those unwanted Christmas gifts. Someone may like them as a raffle prize. The schedule of events will be passed out then. Not too much more to say, so I am looking forward in seeing all of you on April 1st, Monday night. This is not Aprils fools either. Remember, bless our troops and our hospital children, and most of all bless each and everyone of you, as we are the ones that make it all happen. See you on the 1st. From your wagonmaster, James Paullo

SO SAYS STAGECRAFT Most of us have heard of the “Knights of the Round Table” and Stagecraft met that criteria at our meeting in March. Well, “kinda” . At least we were Nobles at round tables, and one square one. We held our meeting at Ryan’s on Wells avenue . In attendance were our elected officers; Jensen, Armstrong and Weston. Others included Snearley, Riley, Larson, McClurg, Paullo, Mace, Bower and Hamilton. At the time of this writing they haven’t elected a new Pope so we were unable to be blessed by him but certainly next best was to receive a blessing from our Potentate. ?? Our meeting this month will be on the 4th in Fernley. See you there.

JOINT CEREMONIAL

Note Changes!

Kerak is hosting the Joint Ceremonial this year at the Sands Hotel (see reservation form); note date change! Everything will begin on Friday May 31st, with a welcome reception. I would like Kerak to make a good showing. Therefore, I am offering to the Noble that brings in the most new candidates (between March 1st and May 15th) to personally pay their dues for the year 2014! This Joint Ceremonial will be a lot of FUN! To all Nobles that have not seen the Arch Degree performed before, this is your chance as well as that of your Ladies. There are petitions for new Nobles, and a registration form for the Joint Ceremonial in this issue of the Kourier, as well as the Temple office. Let’s show the other temples what Kerak is made of by having a good turn out!

WESTERN SHRINE ASSOCIATION CONVENTION April 23rd through April 28th WSA is always a lot of fun! Please join us! I am going! It would be fun if I had some company! After checking the airlines, and Google for distance, I have decided to drive. It is 1025 miles from my home to the hotel in Albuquerque. So that equates to two days driving with one night on the road, which is much cheaper than over $1,000 for two people round trip airfare. However if you should decide to fly, Southwest has the best price. Please see the registration form on the opposite page for information and instructions. Note: Powder Puff clown competition is for those ladies that wish to compete. This is the first time WSA has offerd this. For more info please go to the website: www.westernshrine 2013.com KERAK POTENTATE IS GOING TO WSA ARE YOU?
