Greetings Nobles and Ladies: September doings: The Official Visit to the Elko Shrine Club was wonderful, they have a really great bunch of Shriners in Elko and I want to thank their Club President, Elex Vavrick for putting together a great weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the day Saturday at the California Trail museum, and the dinner at the Star was great. The winner and new Kerak champion of the picon punch contest was Steve Sanders! Congrats Steve! The trip to Cancun was a lot of fun, got to know some people I did not really know well. Food was excellent, so was the weather & booze! Thanks to Steve Sanders and Jay Dini for arranging this trip…..thank you so much! The Nevada Day Parade was as always huge success. Thank you to everyone for participating! Also, a thank you goes to the Potentate & Clowns from Aahmes Shrine Temple in Livermore California for joining us. Additionally, I would like to thank the Daughters of the Nile for the Appreciation Dinner and costume party at our October stated meeting it was a lot of fun. While the Ladies were busy “shopping” at the silent auction we Nobles had our September stated titled meeting where we talked about the upcoming elections in December. The Temple needs two members for the Finance Committee, so if you are interested, please let the Recorder know. By the time you receive this issue of the Kourier, you will have also received your 2014 dues notice. It is important that you send in your dues promptly. Any concerns you have regarding your dues, please contact the Recorder. Have you visited our new website? The address is: kerakshrine.com BIG! Thank you to our Oriental Guide, Jasper Allen Jacobs for a fine job with this website. You might notice some minor changes to this edition of the Kourier. That’s because we have begun doing the Kourier “in house” (as a cost cutting measure). You can submit your articles & pictures directly to the Kourier by using the following e-mail address: communicationsdirector@kerakshrine.com. My thanks to everyone who has donated items for the “lounge”, it is starting to take shape. We will be moving some items from the lounge to upstairs, and we could sure use some help. Speaking of upstairs, it would be nice if the unit and club heads could clean out and straighten up their lockers. Besides you never know what’s lurking in all that stuff…..maybe some old Past Potentates! Did you know that you do not need to be a Shriner or Daughter of the Nile to drive patients to and from the Sacramento Hospital, you just need to have a valid drivers license, proof of insurance, fill out the Shrine form….and a willingness to help children in need. So, if you are currently a driver or co-driver and have a friend or family member who would like to accompany you when you drive a patient, they can. Please let the Recorder know if you are interested.

Nobles and Ladies: I am happy to report that the silent auction made $513.00 for the First Lady’s Project….WOW!! Without the generous donations of items from these people: Bob & Valerie Y’Turiaga, Shirley Chandler, Diane Olvera, Cindy Earnhardt, Nancy Sanders, Pam Vallanding, and the family of Bud & Dorothy Smith, (hope I did not forget anyone!...and I hope I spelled everyone’s name correctly!) the silent auction would not have been possible. I would like to thank all those who purchased those lovely donated items, thank you very much; you all have helped this project go over the $13,000.00 mark. Our trip to Elko was truly wonderful! Dick & I enjoyed the outing on Saturday to the California Trail Interpretive Center there was so much to see I could have spent hours looking at the displays. The dinner at the Star was super, and so much food….WOW! Kudos to the Daughters of the Nile prepared a fantastic Appreciation Dinner. I am very pleased at the relationship between the Shriners and the Daughters of the Nile is so harmonious, and it looks like it will remain that way for many years to come. The Nevada Day celebration is a lot of fun. We enjoy having the Aahmes Shriners join us celebrating Nevada’s admission to the Union. Thank you goes to MaryAnn Spark and group for the wonderful job of putting together the after parade hospitality room, and to everyone for participating. My next focus is the “grand drawing” for the First Lady’s Project It will be for two beautiful handmade quilts. Made by our own Joyce Deal, these quilts are the last quilts she will offer for sale, and they are worth at least $200 each. In addition to the quilts, there are two lovely paintings; one of Emerald Bay and the other of the Truckee River, done by a local artist MaryAnne Spencer, Becky Thiel’s mother. All four items in this drawing are well worth the purchase of a ticket. The tickets sell for $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00, you need not be present to win. So, see me for tickets. The “lounge” is off to a good start. We now have 2 couches, 2 TV’s with stands, 2 DVD players, several boxes of toys and books, a coffee table, an occasional table and 2 lamps. Thank you to everyone for their generosity. We still need some shelves or bookcases, “little people’s tables and chairs” and a playpen or portacrib, to complete the room. If you have any of these items or can obtain any, please contact the temple. Sincerely, Carol Hawkins First Lady, Kerak Shriners

Hi All,

FROM THE DESK OF THE CHIEF RABBAN

Judy and I just returned from the Imperial Membership Seminar in Tampa. I can't tell you how much useful information was presented. It was very inspiring to hear the stories from the Temples that were in serious trouble with their membership numbers and how they were able to turn the numbers around. I brought back many useful tips and information and feel very optimistic about our Temple. I know that it has to be a joint effort of all our members but I'm sure we care enough and will have the enthusiasm to raise our membership numbers and participation. After all we have a most important philanthropy to support. Speaking of the Hospital, I know that we could use some additional drivers. Please let Howard know if you can volunteer as a driver or a rider. I have made several phone calls to Imperial about our life membership program. For those of you that this effects I will have information at the Nov. stated meeting and a possible resolution for some of the problems that have existed. We're still selling raffle tickets for the balloon ride, winner to be drawn at the Nov. meeting. Not selling as fast as I would like but we still have time! This could make a really nice addition to our needed general funds!! Starting this month we will be printing the Kourier in house. It will still bring you all of the information you need however due to budget restraints it may look somewhat different. If you would like to save the Temple the additional cost for postage and paper the Kourier will be available on the Kerak Shrine website. Look forward to seeing a great turnout for this months stated business meeting. Not only do we need your participation, we also enjoy seeing you! Happy Thanksgiving, Gene Chief Rabban

DUES DUES DUES

FROM THE RECORDERS KORNER

We still have a number of Nobles who owe 2013 dues as well as prior years dues. Dues notices for 2014 dues have been sent out. According to Imperial Shrine Bylaws (Iowa) which we must abide by, Article 39, 339.1 reads: Admission: A noble may not be admitted to his own or any other temple, unless he exhibits to the temple to which he desires admittance an official Shrine card for the then current year. This means, admission for business meetings, stated meetings, election of officers, etc. Please, this is your Temple. In order to keep this temple functioning, to do the good we do supporting the hospitals for the kids, please pay your dues promptly. If you are delinquent, please get current. If you simply can’t afford your dues or have a hardship and wish to remain a Kerak Shriner, please contact me by phone or e-mail at kerar@sbcglobal.net. Confidence will be kept. The Divan can assist you, but only if we know there is a problem. The time is getting close to suspending nobles for non-payment of dues per Imperial bylaws.. Frankly, we need both your financial and physical support. Attend meetings, we usually have a dinner prior to the meeting. And, speaking of dinner meetings, trips, visitations, parades, etc., reservations are a MUST. We need to plan how many to buy and prepare dinner for. Visitations and trips, how many are we transporting, or just how many....... I personally enjoy seeing friends and associates, discussing different topics at these dinners and meetings. We are all a part of this temple. Be a part of it. Your input is needed as to how this temple conducts it’s business. Let yourself be heard, or just enjoy what input others have. So far, transportation this year through September: Trips to SHCNC---------------------------------119 Patients transported:--------------------------158 Miles drives:--------------------------------------33591 Cost of meals:------------------------------------$2979.96 Numbers of drivers used----------------------23 Number of co-drivers used:-------------------23 (Thank you drivers and co-drivers) In conclusion, have a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Howard

STAGECRAFT

What a great meeting we had in October at BJ’s in Sparks. What great food they serve. We had one of our better attendances with the following being present: Mace, Smith, Weston, Larson, Armstrong, Lind, Bower, Paullo, Jensen, Mace and McClurg. We loaded 6 of us from Fernley in Jim Lind’s suburban and headed into Sparks. One Fernley member was there so that gave us 7 from Fernley verses 4 from Reno and other parts. By the time you read this the Nevada Day parade will be just another page in history. Stagecraft planned on leaving Fernley at 7:00 AM. with a stop at the Temple on the way to Carson City. It was decided that we would replace all the seats in the fire truck. After all these years we’ve saved almost enough money to accomplish this task. Later!

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE We had a wonderful stated session in October. During ‘good of the order’, the pageantry had a skit to dress up the Queen in her Halloweenlike attire. Some of the Ladies of the Household were heard to say that they had never laughed as much during a session. It was very fun. I hope that the turnout for the October 30th Shrine Appreciation dinner went well, as of this writing, the planning was on track. I’m sure, too that the costume judging included some laughter, as well. Thank you to the performing units from Ammon-Ra Temple No. 56 for participating. We love having fun together. In November, we are looking forward to our Supreme Queen coming to visit us on Friday, the 15th. Closed Ceremonial will be at 2:00pm with formal dinner to follow around 6:00pm. I have sent out invitations and a RoboCall reminder. Menu is: Beef or Chicken or Vegetarian; green salad, vegetables, potato dish, rolls, and dessert. Call PQ Freda Johnson for reservations, 775-825-3633. Nile Love & HUGS to all, Kathy Gritton, Queen 2013

... AND ON THE SEVENTH DAY HE CREATED KLOWNS Joeys-A couple of years ago, Past Pote Steve Saunders asked me where the term “Joey” came from when referring to a clown. I told him, “Heck, I don’t know, I just know we use that word when referring to our fellow clowns.” Well, Sreve did some research and came up with an answer for me at that time. Recently, I did some checking and discovered where, and for whom, the term originated. Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837) was the greatest pantomine clown in England in 18th and 19th centuries. He used a large amount of color to his mouth, cheeks and eyebrows over his white face. The most striking aspect of his make up was the large red tangled tresses. For the next 50 years, English clowns closely imitated his image. Grimaldi was largely responsible for the development of the pantomine clown. Today clowns are often referred to as Joeys in honor of Joseph Grimaldi. Once a clown, always a clown. In early October, this writer, along with his two daughters, attended the Virginia City World Championship Outhouse Races. The three of us were in costume commensurate with the occasion--three turds. One was Poo Poo Platter, one was No S@!t and the other was Tough S@!t. As of this writing, at least one of those “characters” is slated to be at the Pote’s Haloween Costume Dinner. Also, waiting for next year’s races is Bulls@!t and Holy S@!t. Come join us next year. Heck, if there are enough of us, they might even let us enter the parade with the outhouses. The Klown Meeting this month will be held at the Temple on Monday evening, November 18, with eats at 5:30 with the meeting to follow. If you want an excuse to act like a kid again, come join us. We just keep having fun.

SO SAYETH THE CREW

By the time this is read by all, we will have enjoyed our last BBQ, parade, ceremonial, and dinner meeting of the year 2013. By tradition, the Crew is always dark in November and December so that we all may enjoy our family traditions during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Look out 2014! The Crew will be returning on the 4th thursday of the month in January with a new director, a lot of ideas, and a powerful thirst. On a personal note, I would like to thank ALL the Crew members for helping to make this, what I hope was, an enjoyable year. It could not have happened without the help and support of each and every one of the Crew members, especially the Chief Elf. Enjoy the Holidays and have a very Merry Christmas. Thanks again. Santa

THANK YOU

Nancy and I would like to thank all the Nobels and their Ladies for the cards, thoughts and prayers during my recent surgery. All went well, and I was able to travel with the Shriners to Cancun in October. The Doctor asked if I was going with family and I replied, “I was going with Shriners”. He said, “that was even better”. Now that I am back up and functional I am looking forward to “lending-a-hand” at future Shrine activities. Steve Sanders, PP

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, October 10th, 11:30 at the Lakeridge golf course 19th Hole. We discussed our last 2013 official tournament (the annual Club Championship) coming up the next Thursday and Friday. John also went over the schedule for our golf outing to Mesquite, and thanked Joe and Carolyn Crowdis for arranging our very enloyable golf expedition at Apple Hill. Results of the Sierra Sage tournament on September 19th: Winner was John Reed with a net 68, followed by Dan Venters, Ed Nelson and Jim Backoff. Closest-to-the-Hole winners were Dave Darm and Jim Backoff. The Shrine Hospital received a $110 donation. Results of the Empire Ranch (Apple Hill) tournament on October 3rd: Winner was Jim Walsh with a net 69, followed by Ed Smith, Larry Snearly and Joe Crowdis in the next three places. Closest-to-the-Hole winners were Bob Yturiaga and John Reed. Donation to the Hospital was $140.

In the California foothills, next to Folsom Lake, lies Empire Ranch. It is a beautiful golf course with the signature hole being a 211 yard par 3 over water. The course and views reminds one of Lakeridge. The gals visited the Outlet Mall while the guys golfed, then off to dinner. The next day was a perfect day and Apple Hill was Apple Hill. We visited the wineries, breweries, craft exhibits, orchards and, of course, ate too much. HOLE-IN-ONE!!!!!!! Chris Nenzel of Carson City scored a hole-in-one at the Empire Ranch Golf Course on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 during the weekly tournament of the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club. Chris used a 6 iron on the 145 yard par 3 hole #5 on the Blue Course. His shot was witnessed by John Sullivan, George Allison and Clark Reid. Congratulation Chris. Club Point System: By the time you read this Kourier, a “Golfer of the Year” will have already been designated based on total points.
