Manage Products and Services in the Field of Business Operations The primary function of business operations is to create and manage products and services offered by an organization to satisfy the needs of its consumers. Therefore, business operations include those activities involved in the running of a business for the purpose of producing value for the stakeholder. Business operations also encompass three fundamental management essentials that aim to maximize value harvested from business assets. They are: generating recurring income, increasing the value of business and securing the income and value of the business. All of these and more are taught in Centennial College’s Business Operations program. The Business Operations Program consists of two years of training that prepares you for the multi-faceted field. You will learn everything in the areas of operations planning and scheduling, purchasing, logistics, supply chain management, quality, productivity improvement, direct labour supervision and other key operations responsibilities. To acquire entry into the Business Operations program, you will need to possess at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. You’ll also be required to have Compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent and Math 11C, M or U, or 12C or U, or skills assessment, or equivalent. Once your spot in the program is secured, you will take courses such as: Business Fundamentals, Financial Accounting, International Business Concepts, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Courses and many more. The courses in the first three semesters of the Business Operations program are designed to be general business undertakings so that you get a great idea of how the business world works before specialization. Upon graduation from the Business Operations program, you will have the knowledge and skills to succeed in an operations career in any business that provides goods or services. According to Dr. Richard Hadden, a professor of the program, 90 pre cent of graduates obtain high-paying jobs within six months of graduation. Job titles that you may obtain once your education at Centennial College is complete include: quality control technician, inventory analyst, buyer, planning and scheduling coordinator and logistics coordinator. As with many fields, each of these jobs comes with its own unique responsibilities. For example, a quality control technician has the duty of maintaining quality-assurance processes, testing products and recording and analyzing results data during product development and manufacturing. Meanwhile, an inventory analyst develops and implements all policies, procedures, systems and best practices in regard to inventory, for the purpose of maintaining accurate financial information. Following a thorough analysis of a company’s current inventory policies, he or she identifies any deficiencies and inefficiencies, making recommendations along the way. One final job example within Business Operations is that of a logistic coordinator. This person oversees the unloading of supplies in a warehouse or loading dock. The coordinator is also responsible for supervising the packing of purchased products into tractor trailers and ensuring prompt delivery of merchandise to customer locations.
