GENTLE INTERLINK PROJECT: LIBRARY IN 2050 (INDIVIDUAL) LOCATION: OAKLAND, CA TIME: WINTER 2018 | JEFF PONITZ

GENTLE INTERLINK provides a fresh and relaxing space for those who seek to learn and flourish as individuals. It INTERLINKs three different types of programs-community, health, and education. Users have easy access visually and physically to all three types of programs. The act of learning will not happen in an isolated and separate space. Instead, it will happen within the programs of community and health such as green space, exercise facilities, and puppy playground. The goal is to not overlook the importance of any of those three programs, and the hope is to create a healthier learning and social environment for the library users in the future.

HEALTH HAVEN

PROJECT: LIBRARY IN 2050 (COLLABORATION WITH DUNCAN SPARKS) LOCATION: OAKLAND, CA TIME: SPRING 2018 | JEFF PONITZ

In the year 2050, the world will present a more stressful and harsh environment on one’s mental and physical health. This is due in part to technology, environmental depletion and an ever growing population. By providing spaces varying from communal to individual that focus on one or a combination of the three aspects of “Learn,” “Recover,” and “Innovate,” the library will be a space for rejuvenation and reconnection. There will be more emphasized spaces deemed “Nodes” that hold programs that we have determined incorporate all three aspects of “learn,” “recover,” and “innovate.”

NODE: ART AND MUSIC CENTER

NODE: COMMUNITY GARDEN

The entire art and music center spans across the three levels on the north side of the project and is surrounded by “recover” and “innovate” programs thus creating moments of intersection and interaction.

Green space is provided throughout the project in order to create a sense of relaxation and reconnection to nature. Community garden space was placed at the ground and underground levels in order to increase the sense of accessibility to the program.

TWISTING

PROJECT: FITNESS CENTER (INDIVIDUAL) LOCATION: DOWNTOWN LA ARTS DISTRICT, CA TIME: SPRING 2017 | JEREMY MAGNER

TWISTING is a fitness center where an art gallery is embed within for the local artists at downtown LA to display their artworks. The concept of twisting which is known as a motion for athletes and gymnasts, is used as a method for creating space and an idea for circulation. Two twisting objects are layered together with different directions. The bottom object is split into two parts, and the dynamic negative space in the middle serves as a public plaza. Four ramps and a circular stair art gallery are twisted within the building as circulations.

STRETCHED STRAWBERRY PROJECT: URBAN FARM (INDIVIDUAL) LOCATION: HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN TIME: FALL 2017 | THOMAS FOWLER

Hamtramck, a community next to Detroit, is one of the America’s worst urban food deserts. The focus of the design is to improve Hamtramck citizens’ community life in the aspects of diet quality, mental well being and socioeconomic disparity with the idea of urban agriculture. The inspiration of the design process comes from the cross section of a strawberry: the white vascular bundles of the strawberry express an outward stretching motion. STRETCHED STRAWBERRY is a space where farming, selling, socializing, teaching, and relaxing coexisting at the same time. It creates an open path way in the center which connects to each individual program on the sides. It is a limitless and circulation free space where different micro-climates with market stalls and farming plots are formed with the structural and cladding systems discovered during the rich process. There will be various crops growing in the field including carrots, beets, peas, soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, apples, blueberries, cherries and etc.

PROJECT: FOODWAYS (INDIVIDUAL) LOCATION: GUADALUPE, CA TIME: FALL 2016 | ANGELA BRACCO

Site Plan

“Foodways is a community center that focuses on the education and enjoyment of food”. Guadalupe is an agriculture town located next to the Pacific Ocean, and it is a perfect location for plantation and salt harvesting. The foundation of the design is a grid system, and the developments of structural system, circulation, placement of programs, and envelope system revolve around it. GRID CANOPY provides a journey of discovering the process of curing and smoking for the purpose of food preservation along with the experience of traveling through a canopied forest. A forest that uncovers the detailed processes of salt harvesting, brine, dry curing, smoking, and vegetable/tree plantation.

AGGREGATE AGRICULTURE

PROJECT: SUPERBLOCK REINVENTION (COLLABORATION WITH LOGAN KOZLIK AND PAIGE LAFFERTY) LOCATION: POBLENOU, BARCELONA TIME: FALL 2018 | IAAC

Aggregate Agriculture focuses on creating a new urban ecology in Poblenou Barcelona. In Catalonia, 262,000 TONNES of food are wasted annually. In Spain, 70% of all waste is construction and demolition waste, and only 14% of it is recycled. The project uses local food waste and construction waste in Poblenou as resources to grow fresh produce. Uses the technique of Gabion Wall, it can be built with chicken wire, robotic welded metal forms, or organic waste such as bone meal or egg shell in the future. The goal is also to create a new market economy and to create incentives with a point value system. Certain point value is given to certain tasks to encourage citizens to participate in the process of building and production to exchange for fresh produce.
