Finding a Hyperhidrosis Doctor – Here’s How… You experience excessive sweating and have tried various remedies and treatments but nothing seems to work. If your condition is this serious it is known as hyperhidrosis and perhaps it is time to seek medical attention. There are various kinds of doctors that deal with this condition and you need to spend some time finding the one that’s right for you. Make sure that the doctor is supportive, understanding and knowledgeable in treating hyperhidrosis. Your relief and anxiety can easily be alleviated in finding the right hyperhidrosis doctor.
Primary Care Physicians
You would typically start with your primary care physician to discuss the problem. If the doctor tries various treatments and is not able to solve your sweating problem, then the primary care doctor will refer you to someone who specializes in hyperhidrosis. This doctor is usually a dermatologist.
You will find that dermatologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of skin problems. As such, they know most about the skin and will most likely be your best source for treatment. A dermatologist might prescribe for you a strong antiperspirant or some other skin care product that can alleviate the sweating without causing irritation. Dermatologists can also provide iontophoresis which is a treatment that uses water to conduct a mild electrical current through the skin’s surface. This current works with the mineral particles in the water. Together they thicken the outer layer of the skin which then can block the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. This treatment seems to “turn off” the production of sweat to the skin. Another technique which the dermatologist can use is local injections of Botox. Treating the armpits, feet, hands and face with Botox can be safe and effective. If you decide to use this treatment, please be aware that it is still being investigated as standard means for solving sweating conditions.
Neurologists treat conditions of the brain and nervous systems which control the body’s sweat glands. They may be consulted to find the underlying conditions of your sweating problem. You go to see a neurologist after other doctors such as primary care physicians and dermatologists have been seen and failed to provide relief. You can also get Botox treatments from a neurologist.
You would go to see a surgeon to perform some kind of operation to treat hyperhidrosis. They use various techniques which are local in nature performed at the point of sweating. These can include excision, curettage and liposuction. In an excision process the sweat gland may be cut
out while during curettage, it may be scraped out. Liposuction would be used to remove a sweat gland by suction. The results with these techniques are excellent and should not be ruled out as means to control your sweating problem. These tips are really just the start.
