DEAR FRIEND,
In 1968, JASA began with a simple but ambitious goal: to help older New Yorkers remain rooted in their communities with dignity, independence, and connection. Today, that vision has grown into a dynamic, citywide organization reaching more than 40,000 older adults each year with vital services and care.
This impact report offers a window into what your partnership makes possible. Each story you read here represents how your generosity has transformed a single life — one person, one moment, one turning point at a time. As you explore these pages, you'll see the impact goes even deeper. The data reveals the scale, consistency, and lasting change your support drives across New York City.
As I step into the role of Chief Executive Officer, I am honored to serve alongside a dedicated staff and community of supporters who believe that aging should be accompanied by opportunity, security, and respect. Together, we are ensuring access to nutritious food, safe housing, meaningful social connection, financial stability, and the resources older adults need to protect their health and well-being. Every day, I witness innovation and compassion in action.
The need for our work has never been more urgent. New York City's older population is expanding rapidly, and the systems meant to support them are under increasing strain. Our commitment remains clear: to deepen our impact, broaden our reach, and remain a steadfast presence for those who depend on us.
Thank you for being an essential part of JASA's work and mission. Because of you, older New Yorkers can age with dignity, purpose, and joy.
It is a privilege to be your partner in this work.
With gratitude,

Gayle M. Horwitz CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

“ OVERHEARD AT JASA:
We used to sleep in the car. We never thought we would become homeless. JASA called me – they told me they were here to help me with an affordable place to live. I was over the moon when I found out I got a JASA apartment. ”
“If I have a problem, I can always go to the JASA staff. They told me that they can help with whatever I need. They come to check in on me every week and are very good people.” – DIMITRIOS
LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW JASA IS RAISING THE BAR FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR OLDER NEW YORKERS
Housing
Dimitrios grew up in a small seaside town in Greece. He spent his days enjoying fresh fish, swimming in the ocean, and visiting with neighbors. Encouraged by his uncle, an American citizen, Dimitrios immigrated to the United States in search of opportunity. He found work as a cook in a Greek restaurant, bringing with him a strong work ethic and pride in his craft.
Over time, Dimitrios faced mounting challenges. Job instability and limited support eventually left him without a place to live. For years, he slept under a bridge in Long Island City, exposed to the elements and the daily uncertainty of life on the streets. A community organization helped him move into a shelter, where he stayed for a year, but the environment felt unsafe and left him constantly anxious. Dimitrios longed for stability and a place he could finally call home.
Dimitrios' life changed when he moved into JASA's affordable housing. He has now lived in his apartment for about a year and values the quiet, cleanliness, and – most importantly – the sense of safety it provides. The JASA Residential Service Coordinator helped him set up utilities, arrange meal deliveries, access benefits, resolve insurance issues, and find a doctor. He has built warm relationships with staff and neighbors, enjoys visiting the nearby park, and hopes to remain in his JASA home for many years to come.

Ernest was born and raised in the Bronx, one of eight siblings, and has been married to his wife for 50 years. A man of deep faith, Ernest and his wife are Christians who built their life together through decades of hard work and shared values. Ernest worked in real estate before spending 30 years in the insurance business, and the couple retired together. Music has always brought him joy – especially salsa and jazz – and through his choir he has traveled to 27 states. In his free time, he enjoys concerts and shooting pool.
In 2019, Ernest experienced a traumatic incident that deeply affected him. After losing his wallet at a local smoothie shop, he accompanied police to the station to retrieve it, only to be arrested and confined. Though released the same day, the experience left lasting emotional scars, and he describes feeling as though he was constantly being chased in his mind.
Ernest was connected to JASA’s mental health services in the Bronx, where he was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and began weekly therapy sessions. His JASA therapist provided care, respect, and genuine support, helping him process the trauma and regain confidence. After six years of therapy, Ernest feels grounded, stronger, and able to live life on his own terms once again, grateful for the encouragement and support that made his healing possible.

“I’ve been in therapy at JASA and I've gotten more in touch with my feelings. Compared to six years ago, I’m in such a better place right now because of JASA. I’ve been coming regularly for the past six years. It gave me encouragement. I’m at a point now where I still struggle, but it’s not as severe. I’m grateful.” — ERNEST

Bonnie was born and raised in Brooklyn, where she built a full life centered on family and community. She was married to her husband for 42 years before he passed away, and together they raised a daughter and welcomed several grandchildren. She worked as a bank secretary for 15 years before retiring to care for her household. An avid home cook, Bonnie loved cooking and baking and often took culinary classes, proudly saying, “You name it, I baked it!”
One year ago, Bonnie’s life changed. She was struck by a car while walking in Coney Island. The driver fled the scene, and Bonnie spent 100 days in a rehabilitation center. After the accident, she was unable to walk without assistance. Through months of determination and therapy, she now uses only a cane.
When it was time to return home, her daughter enrolled her in JASA’s Home-Delivered Meals program. Bonnie values that the meals are kosher and especially enjoys the cumin-spiced chickpeas and salmon. For Bonnie’s birthday, the JASA team surprised her with a celebration along with her daily meal. Bonnie loves how JASA gives her back some of the independence she lost due to her accident.

Arlene is originally from Trinidad and moved to the United States at age 16. She is a devoted mother of three and grandmother to two, including a grandson who lives with her. Arlene built her career as a nursing assistant, a role she loved because it allowed her to care for others.
Family has always been central to Arlene’s life. About 20 years ago, her mother married her stepfather, who became a steady and loving presence, especially when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He supported the family through that difficult time and remained close to Arlene and her siblings. After her mother passed away four years ago, Arlene’s stepfather’s health began to decline. He was eventually diagnosed with dementia, and Arlene stepped in as his caregiver, welcoming him into her home.
Caring for her stepfather while working has been emotionally and physically challenging. Arlene was referred to JASA’s Caregiver Program, where a social worker arranged 15 hours of weekly respite home care. JASA also provided incontinence and medical supplies and connected her to a weekly caregiver support group. With this support, Arlene feels less alone, more capable, and better able to continue caring for her stepfather and family, while maintaining her own well-being.

“Being a caregiver is extremely challenging - mentally and physically. If you don’t have support, you will go crazy. JASA’s social worker supports me emotionally by talking to me. I participate in the support groups. The advice that they give - you’re not alone in this, that you have other people - is so helpful.” — ARLENE

“ OVERHEARD AT JASA:
I didn’t even recognize myself anymore. I was exhausted and felt guilty for even thinking about needing help. But I was running on fumes. I didn’t realize how badly I needed someone to care for me too. Thanks to JASA’s Caregiver Support Program, having just a few hours a week to rest or run errands without worrying gave me space to breathe again. Caregiving doesn’t have to mean losing yourself. There is strength in asking for help. ”

Steve has been married to his wife, Fran, for 50 years. Steve jokes the secret is simply “Yes, dear,” while Fran says it’s because they always make each other laugh. The two met at a beach club, when Steve overheard another man telling Fran she was “geographically unacceptable” because she lived in Far Rockaway – only for Steve to discover he lived just three blocks away. Steve became a caseworker for the Department of Social Services, Fran a preschool teacher, and together they raised one son.
As Steve got older, many of the hobbies he once loved became harder to continue. A former athlete, he spent years playing paddleball, handball, and tennis. After retiring at age 62, Steve found himself searching for new ways to stay active, engaged, and connected.
That’s when Steve discovered his local JASA older adult center. Now 82 years old, he has been attending the center for nearly 20 years. The center offers everything he needs, from nutritious meals to activities and meaningful social connections. Steve enjoys ping pong, Trivial Pursuit, and monthly birthday parties. He especially values the lectures and sessions led by experts such as nutritionists, police officers, and the fire department. He describes the center as a fun, welcoming community where everyone gets along, and says the people – and the staff – make it a place he looks forward to visiting again and again.

Peggy grew up in Manhattan in a big, lively family with four brothers and one sister. She went on to raise two children of her own – a son and a daughter – and later became a proud great-grandmother. Peggy built a career as a payroll manager. Although she was initially nervous about leading a team, she was pleasantly surprised to find how much she enjoyed it. Before her health declined, Peggy loved taking walks in the park, either on her own or alongside her three-year-old great-grandson.
In recent years, Peggy has faced significant health challenges, including two falls in her home. After a twomonth hospital stay, it became clear that she needed additional support at home. Everyday tasks that once came easily were now difficult to manage on her own.
That’s when JASACare stepped in to help. Peggy was matched with an experienced, skilled home care aide who supports her with daily activities and household tasks. Her aide cleans and organizes her home, sweeps and mops the floors, washes dishes, folds laundry, carries Peggy’s walker up the stairs, and accompanies her to food shopping and medical appointments. With this dependable support, Peggy is able to continue living in her own home with dignity. As Peggy says of her aide, “There is no one better!”

“ OVERHEARD AT JASA:
I just wanted to sincerely thank the JASA Care Transitions Program for all the help and guidance. My parents were able to get their medications, and my dad was also able to receive one of his prescriptions that wasn’t covered by the plan. I truly don’t know how I would have managed this post-operation process without your support. I’m incredibly grateful for your time, patience, and dedication in helping me care for my parents – you are truly a godsend. ”
“I couldn’t remember which day or time to take my medications. My JASA Care Navigator went through everything and straightened it out for me. Carlton was born in Virginia, raised in Brooklyn, and proudly calls himself a “New Yorker.” He worked in construction and is the father of seven and grandfather to eleven. While his family now lives in Virginia, Carlton remains in New York with his wife. He enjoys spending time in Manhattan dining out and shopping.
Carlton lives with several chronic health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, and was prescribed multiple medications with different instructions. Managing them became overwhelming, particularly after the devastating loss of his son. In his grief, Carlton stopped taking his medications altogether, putting his health at serious risk.
Through JASA’s partnership with Elderplan, Carlton was connected to JASA for support. Staff helped him understand and organize his medications, reminded him about refills, and accompanied him to doctors appointments. Though hesitant to trust at first, Carlton says his JASA Care Navigator made him feel comfortable and supported, motivating him to take better care of his health. Ms. R* owns a three-family home in Queens and has built her life around hard work, family, and faith. A retired Merrill Lynch assistant, she helped others plan for financial security. Originally from Trinidad, where she earned a bronze medal in competitive swimming, Ms. R made New York her home with her husband. Together, they raised their children and invested in a home meant to provide security and opportunity for generations.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted that stability. Two apartments in her home were rented to relatives who lost their jobs and could no longer pay rent. With only her husband’s income and three children in college, bills piled up, and the house went into foreclosure. Seeking legal help, she was told the upfront cost would be $10,000 or more – far beyond her means.
Through a housing counselor, Ms. R connected with JASA’s Legal Services for Elder Justice. A JASA attorney took her case, attending multiple virtual settlement conferences in Queens Supreme Court. Though the bank initially demanded a $297,030 lump sum, the attorney negotiated a loan modification, showing it was in the best interest of both Ms. R and the bank. When the foreclosure was resolved, Ms. R was overwhelmed with relief and joy. For the first time in months, she could breathe again, secure in knowing that her family could remain in their home.
JASA’s Legal Services for Elder Justice helps seniors on issues related to housing stability, evictions, foreclosures, fraud and scam prevention, and elder abuse intervention. Attorneys work with social workers as part of our innovative, interdisciplinary, and nationally recognized team approach.

“ I didn’t know what to do. I was losing weight. I couldn’t eat. The stress was unbearable – we didn’t know where we’d go. I was afraid that our family would end up living on the streets. JASA’s dedication gave us hope again. I’ve never met anyone like our JASA attorney – because of him, I know that JASA is a great organization made up of smart, dedicated attorneys who truly care about the people they help. JASA’s work makes a real difference. — MS. R ”

Pauline was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to the United States at age 42 in search of opportunity. She settled in New York City, where she has built a full life and embraced everything the city offers, from its cultural diversity to its changing seasons. She married a man she met through a neighbor’s family, and they are celebrating 22 years together. Pauline is the proud mother of eight children, grandmother to nineteen, and great-grandmother to eleven. She enjoys attending church, spending time with family, and recently became a U.S. citizen.
In 2017, one of Pauline’s sons began showing signs of mental illness, and his behavior became aggressive. Pauline endured years of emotional and verbal abuse and grew increasingly fearful. Despite repeated calls to 911, her son refused treatment. Desperate for help, Pauline walked into a JASA site and was connected with a social worker.
JASA provided Pauline with critical support and guidance. Her social worker helped connect her son to mobile crisis services and encouraged Pauline throughout the process. With treatment and ongoing support, her son’s aggression has subsided, and they are beginning to rebuild their relationship. Pauline says, “With the help of JASA, I finally have some peace.”

Catherine is 90 years old and has lived in her Brooklyn apartment for 40 years. She is divorced and has two sons: one lives nearby, while the other and her grandchildren live far away. Always an active person, Catherine has seen over 20 Broadway shows and loved going out to eat afterward. Living just a block from the beach, she spent much of her time there. In her younger years, she enjoyed dancing, going on cruises, visiting Atlantic City with friends, and attending social events that kept her busy and engaged.
In recent years, Catherine has faced health challenges. She now uses a walker and has vision issues. After a surgery left her temporarily unable to see, a friend suggested she connect with JASA. A social worker quickly arranged home-delivered meals. Catherine was able to pick from several options and chose the salt-free meals. JASA also provided her with a walker and a shower bench, and helped her apply for SNAP benefits, ensuring she had the support she needed to maintain her health.
Catherine says she values the frequent calls from her social worker to check in on her well-being. She describes the support as “excellent, excellent, excellent,” and appreciates having someone reliable to help her maintain independence, stay connected, and feel safe, cared for, and supported in her home.

John’s life took on new harmony when he met his wife, Caren, also a performer. They met backstage at an event 13 years ago, talking so long a janitor had to ask them to leave. When they married, John moved into Caren’s childhood apartment, in a building with many older adults. Several years ago, JASA launched a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) there, creating opportunities for residents to stay connected and supported.
Through the NORC program, John and Caren have found a vibrant community that meets their practical and social needs. Caren teaches chair yoga, and John leads a senior choir. Monthly birthday celebrations, educational sessions, and the warmth of JASA staff have created a strong sense of belonging. John says the staff are amazing, and he values the community the NORC has built – helping them stay active, social, and supported.

Nancy is 66 years old and was born and raised in Brooklyn. She spent six years living in Puerto Rico, where she studied to become a bilingual secretary, before returning to New York to work. A few years later, a back injury brought her career to an unexpected end. Family is at the center of Nancy’s life – she has two children, several grandchildren, and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first great-grandchild. In her free time, she enjoys playing dominoes, reading, and doing crafts at home. She spends much of her time at church and with the close-knit community of friends and family she has built.
For years, Nancy submitted dozens of housing applications, only to be placed on waitlists. When she finally moved into JASA affordable senior housing in March 2024, Nancy was overjoyed. Her favorite feature of her new apartment is the windows, where she watches the sunrise in the morning and airplanes take off at night.
In her new home, Nancy enjoys independence along with the reassurance of on-site support. She has formed close relationships with JASA staff, who regularly check in on her. Nancy also participates in building activities, including bingo and arts and crafts, and knows help is always nearby when she needs it.

Jaime and Aida have been married for 45 years, sharing a life filled with love, music, and movement. Aida was born in New York, and Jaime in Puerto Rico. They have always enjoyed dancing, traveling, and spending time together. Jaime worked in construction before later working at a hospital, while Aida spent many years as an ESL teacher, finding joy in hearing her students say, “I can finally speak English.”
More than a decade ago, Jaime was diagnosed with vascular dementia. As they began this new chapter, Aida became Jaime’s primary caregiver. Determined to keep their lives full, they continued to dance, enjoy nature, travel, and play calming games that helped Jaime feel at ease. Over time, however, the demands of caregiving became overwhelming, and Aida realized she was close to burnout.
Through JASA’s partnership with the Montefiore Center for Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease, Aida and Jaime were connected to vital support. JASA helped them access caregiver workshops, support groups, and up-to-date information on Alzheimer’s research and resources. Today, they are grateful to have the guidance and support they need to face this journey together.

Jeffrey is a native New Yorker who has lived in Queens for more than 30 years. He and his wife have five children, seven grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. Jeffrey spent 10 years at the Vera Institute of Justice before becoming Deputy Director of the Midtown Community Court. He worked to address community issues and helped incarcerated fathers stay connected with their families. Outside of work, Jeffrey enjoys fishing and the arts, especially music, museums, and jazz.
A few years ago, Jeffrey was diagnosed with a progressive condition that significantly affected his breathing, mobility, and daily life. At his wife’s encouragement, he connected with JASA’s Palliative Care program, where he worked with a social worker and clinical care navigator. Together, they focused on medical care planning, symptom management, emotional support, and identifying what mattered most to him. With JASA’s support, Jeffrey has been able to continue enjoying life – including attending a jazz concert – and says the program restored his quality of life and made a meaningful difference every day.

Mary was born in Trinidad, where she worked for a furniture store before deciding to seek new opportunities. More than 30 years ago, she moved to New York to build a better life. She was filled with excitement – especially for her first winter. For 23 years, she worked as a nanny on Long Island, a role that suited her lifelong love of children. Family is at the center of Mary’s life. She is the proud matriarch of 10 children, 42 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and even a few great-great-grandchildren. They speak daily, and Mary enjoys spending time at home watching game shows and listening to the radio.
As she grew older, managing her health became more challenging. Mary lives with multiple chronic conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a hormonal disorder. These conditions began to affect her independence and made daily tasks more difficult to manage on her own.
A few years ago, Mary’s doctor connected her to JASA’s Health Home program. Since then, JASA staff have supported her with essential medical equipment such as a cane, medical alert device, blood pressure kit, and shower chair – critical tools for someone who is often home alone. They also help coordinate medical appointments and transportation. Most importantly, Mary has built a trusting relationship with her care team and feels reassured knowing JASA is always there to support her.

Howard was born in Queens and now lives on Long Island. His wife passed away many years ago, and he is the father of twin children – a daughter and a son – and grandfather to one granddaughter. After majoring in math in college, Howard worked as an actuary for many years before retiring 10 years ago. He enjoys spending time with his family and taking classes, including those offered through JASA’s NextAct program (formerly Sundays at JASA). When COVID began, Howard was feeling isolated and joined the newly launched JASAChat, where he was matched with Andrew.
Andrew was born and raised in New York City and works at Amazon. Growing up, he was especially close with his grandmother, Myrna, who introduced him to Broadway shows and other cultural experiences. Early in the pandemic, a friend told him about JASAChat, and he quickly joined. He was soon paired with Howard.
Howard and Andrew have talked on the phone weekly for the past five years, discovering shared interests in sports – they are both Yankees and Knicks fans – as well as Seinfeld and politics. Howard enjoys hearing about Andrew’s work in advertising, while Andrew loves learning about Howard’s family. Recently, they were able to meet in person for the first time, strengthening their friendship beyond phone calls. As one of JASAChat’s earliest matches, Howard and Andrew’s connection exemplifies how consistent support and shared interests can foster meaningful, long-lasting relationships.

Elaine grew up on Long Island and now calls Brooklyn home. A natural people-person, she loves comedy, laughing, and connecting with others wherever she goes. She has even dabbled in improv and podcasting. Elaine met her husband while working as an usher at the U.S. Open, and for the next 25 years they worked side by side. The job gave Elaine what she loved most: the chance to meet new people, tell them jokes, and make them smile. Together, she and her husband built a joyful life, sharing many happy years with their dogs and cats.
When Elaine’s husband passed away, her world shifted overnight. She was grieving and felt overwhelmed. Unsure where to turn, she searched online for help and reached out to JASA. Elaine was connected to the Senior Community Connection (SCC) program at a moment when she was struggling both emotionally and financially, and needed guidance she could trust.
Through SCC, a social worker helped her sort through complex paperwork after her husband’s passing, patiently explaining each step and assisting her with applications for benefits and entitlements such as Medicare. Elaine also met with JASA's pastoral counselor who helped her navigate her loss and begin to heal. She says that while she is still facing challenges, she stays positive and refuses to give up. Thanks to JASA and the SCC team, she knows she is not alone – and that there will always be someone there to lean on when she needs it.

Anibal is a 65-year-old veteran who served in the National Guard. He has been married twice and is the father of five children and grandfather to 14 grandchildren, some living nearby and others in Puerto Rico. Anibal is a DJ and artist who enjoys hip hop and Latin music, painting graffiti and canvases, and airbrushing. He also loves bicycle riding and has biked across all five boroughs and completed a 100-mile race.
Anibal has faced serious physical and emotional challenges, including two heart attacks, leukemia, and the loss of his younger brother. During this time, he fell behind on rent and risked eviction, which added stress to his health and grief.
He connected with JASA’s Adult Protective Services, where his case manager advocated to reinstate his subsidy, applied for a grant to cover past rent, and helped implement a financial plan to prevent future issues. Anibal appreciates the regular check-ins, which help him feel supported and able to manage his health and housing with confidence.

Lesly is 90 years old and an avid reader, enjoying classics like The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. Originally from Queens and later Brooklyn, she is the mother of four and grandmother of seven, and now lives with her youngest son and his family. Lesly was a first-grade teacher, a career she truly loved. Though she married and had children before finishing college, she was determined to earn her degree, completing her education at age 39, after 21 years of study, majoring in education.
When her husband retired, Lesly looked for educational opportunities for him and discovered Sundays at JASA, now called NextAct. Even though he wasn’t interested, she saved the information. Upon her own retirement in the 1990s, she attended her first JASA class – a guest lecture that captivated her. She turned to a fellow attendee and said, “This is the place that I want to be!”
Lesly has been taking classes for over 25 years. Her favorites include Shakespeare, as well as courses in poetry, music, and art. She especially values the lively discussions and debates with classmates and fondly recalls going out to lunch with friends after Sunday classes. Since the pandemic, Lesly has continued participating via Zoom, staying intellectually engaged and socially connected through the program she loves.

Karen is originally from Jamaica and moved to the United States in the 1990s. Karen is a devoted mother of two and grandmother to one grandson. She has always loved caring for others, spending many years working with children and staying active in her church, often cooking meals for those in need.
About 20 years ago, Karen was diagnosed with glaucoma. Her vision has steadily worsened, making it difficult to read and write, causing chronic eye pain, and limiting her independence. Over time, these challenges made it incrementally harder for her to manage daily tasks and navigate critical systems on her own.
Karen was connected to JASA through a woman she had looked after years earlier. Staff helped her move into her apartment and access counseling services. At this time, she was already receiving benefits such as Social Security, SNAP, and Medicaid. However, they were cut off when she reported her address change to NYC. Because of her visual impairment, Karen could not read the notices explaining the problem. Through JASA’s NYC Benefits program, a social worker helped reinstate her full SNAP benefits, recover unused funds, and resolve issues with Medicaid and Social Security. With JASA’s support, Karen has regained stability and confidence. As she says, “My JASA social worker doesn’t give up. I can depend on her – she has been a rock for me.”

Supporters: Elected Officials
JASA recognizes the following elected officials for their generous support of JASA’s programs and services through their invaluable partnerships in the communities we serve, as well as through discretionary funds and Council Initiatives. These funds allow JASA the flexibility to enhance programs available to older adults beyond the concrete services provided in government contracts. Funds help support cultural arts, entertainment, exercise, education, group outings, and special events.
