A Letter from the Executive Director With the first hint of Fall in the air, October is always a welcome time here in Acadiana. The cooler temperatures are a reminder of the wonderful holidays coming up on the horizon, and also a reminder of the importance of relationships with special people in our lives that we celebrate with on those occasions. The recent flooding has also been a stark reminder of the importance of relationships and our dependence on the help of others when we are hit by life’s inevitable struggles. It has been incredibly heartwarming to witness the outpouring of support and compassion extended to those impacted by the August flood. Every time I learn of the kindness of strangers helping flood victims, whether it is local high school football players or retirees from up north who have traveled down here on church missions, I stop and honor the depth and beauty of the human spirit. And just as wonderful, the selfless helpers also seem to be positively impacted by their actions! As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” So, in this delightful time of the year, let us delight in the many good relationships that we cherish, both old and new! Here at Upper Lafayette, we certainly cherish our members, sponsors and friends! We hope you enjoy this issue, and may God bless you and your families.

Stephen Ortego opens Beau Bassin in Downtown Carencro Many know Stephen Ortego for his past service as a State Representative for the Carencro community. Now he is becoming just as well known for his delightful offerings at the Beau Bassin Café, located at 203 E. St. Peter Street in Carencro, which opened in April 2016.

Service with a smile!

The historic Bank of Lafayette building, built in 1906, provides the perfect setting for Beau Bassin, and was restored to its original elegance by Ortego, who is also an architect. The café showcases delicious menu offerings such as French Toast with blueberries, Vanilla Cappuccino, an assortment of crêpes (such as sweet potato and praline, or chocolate and berry), and a sweet assortment of gelatos.

According to its website, “Beau Bassin is named after both the coulée that runs through Carencro and the region to the east of Carencro. Here Louis Pierre Arceneaux, prototype of Longfellow’s Gabriel, established a ranch in 1765 near the Vermilion River, naming it Beaubassin, after the Acadian town in Nova Scotia, Canada.” The quaint restaurant definitely exudes charm and the historic values of our region: it is worth a trip to check it out if you haven’t already done so! Beau Bassin is open Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 7:00 pm; Friday, 6:00 am – 7:00 pm; Saturday, 8:00 am – 9:00 pm, and Sunday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Check it out at 203 E. St. Peter in Carencro or visit www.beaubassincafe.com.

Northside High’s Academy of Legal Studies Off to Yale for National Moot Court Competition! Delonda Richardson, director of Northside High’s Academy of Legal Studies, is excited to take Northside High’s mock trial team to Yale University for a nationwide competition in early October 2016. Accompanying the team is long-time director Liz Tullier who set up the program at its inception and just recently retired. The invitation-only competition will allow nine Northside students to perform mock trials against 24 other teams from across the country. “It’s a criminal case,” Richardson said. “The students have to prepare both sides of the case, so they have to know everything about the plaintiff and the defendant. Once we arrive at the competition, we have no idea who we will be competing against. We don’t know if we’ll be the defendant or the plaintiff. The students have to be prepared for either side, and make sure they have all the evidence and questions prepared.” When not competing, the Northside students will have a chance to learn from Yale’s national award-winning mock trial team. “They will be the ones to coach the students and the other teams,” Richardson said. “Once they have finished the competition, they will go to some seminars and receive pointers on things they can do better. It’s going to help all of the students, including those who are looking at pre-law or criminal justice. They can all take these pointers and apply it to other cases.” We will follow up with the results of this competition in our November newsletter, but for now, we want to congratulate the accomplished students who so skillfully represent our region in national mock trial! We are so proud to have sponsored Northside High’s Academy of Legal Studies’ trip to Yale in New Haven, Connecticut and look forward to many more stories on their successful endeavors!
