Foreword

Welcome to the new Windows brand identity guidelines for Microsoft Partners. Use of these creative elements must comply with all guidelines outlined in this document. These product images complement existing logo programs and are not intended to replace any programs or other guidelines currently in place. These Windows 8 assets are provided under NDA and must not be communicated or appear in advertising prior to Windows 8 General Availability.

Creative Elements Usage Guidelines •

The creative elements may only be used to promote the Microsoft products and services represented by the element. They may not be used in any manner that may cause confusion about whether your products or services are from Microsoft, or that implies that Microsoft is affiliated with, sponsors, endorses or approves of you or your products or services.

No Microsoft brand elements or identity may be used other than the specified product images made available.

You must include the following attribution statement: “Microsoft product images reprinted with permission from Microsoft Corporation.”

When using the Microsoft product images, you must also display your own product name, company name or logo or other branding in the primary and more prominent branding position.

Your use of product images may not be obscene or pornographic.

No translations or localizations are permitted. Microsoft will provide localized assets if applicable.

The product tiles or logos may be used to advertise Microsoft products preinstalled on hardware systems or devices.

You may not use the box shot in a comparative advertisement.

You may not use any of Microsoft’s box shots as a link to your website.

You may not alter the creative in any way except to resize an entire image. Any element contained within the asset (i.e., graphics, artwork, or trade dress) cannot be used independently of the entire image.

The creative elements may not be used on or in connection with any material that disparages Microsoft or any of its products or services.

The creative elements may not be used in connection with materials, products, or services that would violate applicable laws, rules, or regulations.

If any Microsoft product is mentioned in your marketing materials, the full name of the Microsoft product(s) must be used at first and most prominent mention.

The creative are for use by Microsoft partners only and are not to be circulated to others.

The product tiles or box shots may not be used on or in any products or software, including packaging.

You may not combine the creative elements with any other symbols, words, images or designs.

Our logo is a window in perspective. Our logo includes our symbol and logotype, designed to work together in a horizontal lockup. Trademark symbols Logos provided without trademark symbols ( TM and 速) should be used in marketing materials only. Trademark symbols are still required in certain places in and on product, and on product packaging.

Logo sizes and scale

Our logo artwork is available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Display.

Small

Select the appropriate logo size by determining the height required for your layout. Each logo size may be scaled up within the specified ranges only.

Measurements are based on the height of the Windows symbol.

Scale height between: .2 – .399” 5 – 9.99 mm 14 – 28 px

Medium Scale height between: .4 – 2.99” 10 – 75.99 mm 29 – 215 px

Display Scale height between: 3” and larger 76 mm and larger 216 px and larger

Logo clearspace and minimum size

Let the logo breathe.

Clearspace

Clearspace Treat our logo with respect and give it room to breathe. Use a minimum clearspace surrounding the logo equivalent to the height of the symbol. Minimum size The minimum recommended size of the logo is .2" / 5 mm high for print and 15 px onscreen.

Logo color variations

Windows is colorful.

White logo on color background

Our logo or background color may be any color within the Windows color palette. Contrast is important — use a white logo on color backgrounds and a color logo on white backgrounds. Our logo may also be used on an image background with sufficient contrast. Use a color logo on light image backgrounds and a white logo on dark image backgrounds.

DON’T place a color logo on a color background. Color logos are used on white backgrounds; white logos are used on color backgrounds.

Logo don’ts

DON’T create a multi-color logo.

DON’T create a gradient logo.

Open a wider world.

DON’T rearrange the logo elements.

DON’T create a lockup of the logo with copy.

DON’T change the angle or rotation of the symbol or logotype.

Supporting colors White, cool grays and black are our supporting colors, used primarily for copy. White is also used as a background color.

Windows Start Screen The default Start screen background image must always be used and modifying the color or graphics is not allowed. Personalization is an important aspect of Windows 8. However, in order to build consistent brand recognition, no personalization or customization of the Start Screen is allowed for our initial launch assets provided. The tile content (such as photos and badges) meets specific goals and is approved for usage worldwide. The number of rows of tiles on a device display depends on the scaled height of the tiles, the vertical resolution of the display, and the pixel density. Use the 3-row, 4-row, 5-row, or 6-row Start screenshot when the Start screenshot is shown in a display of a specific device based on the guidance in the Screenshot Resolution Usage Chart. Note: Only the 3-row screen may be used in marketing activities as a standalone asset or outside of a device display.

Box shot examples:

Box Shot Windows product box shots may only be used in marketing related to offering of the full packaged product (when a customer will receive the actual Windows product box). Partners may make limited use of these box shots in marketing activities such as: print or online advertising, in-store merchandise or retail circulars. Box shots must not be used to represent a preinstalled edition of Windows 8 – product tiles should be used in those scenarios. Use in full color only. Do not alter the artwork provided: do not change the color, and do not skew or stretch the shape of the asset. Assets are available for online (RGB) and print (CMYK) use, and in multiple angles (left, right and flat). Both Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro feature 5 different illustrations, shared across both editions. Any illustration may be used in marketing.

Product Tile Examples:

Product tiles should be used when marketing a device pre-installed with Windows 8. Assets are available to partners for limited use in marketing activities such as advertising, documentation (including educational brochures), tutorial books, videotapes, or websites, provided that all uses comply with all terms in this document, including the following additional guidelines. Product tiles use approved logo lockups and are aligned to the color of the default Start screen. Use in full color only.

Product Name

Referencing the Windows Product Name When referencing Windows in text (vs. using a logo) please adhere to the following guidelines: • Never refer to the product simply as “8”. Always include Windows in the product name. • Never abbreviate Windows 8. For example, don’t call it Win8, W8, 8 or Win 8 Pro. • Do not include Microsoft in the name. The product is “Windows 8”, not “Microsoft Windows 8”. • Don’t use Windows 8 in the possessive, as in, “Windows 8’s security features are impressive.” Instead say, “The security features of Windows 8 are impressive.” • Always use the numeral 8; do not spell out eight. The number 8 must not be localized in writing. However, within a given market, the number 8 should be pronounced in the same manner that the version numbers are typically pronounced in other Microsoft products. • Where you include a trademark footnote to give notice of your own trademarks or third party trademarks, you must add the following wording to the trademark footnote, when referring to Windows 8: “All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners.”   The official SKU names for Windows 8 should be referred to as follows: • Windows 8 • Windows 8 Pro   Note: Trademark symbols are no longer required in marketing execution.
