NOTES FROM THE R.T.C. Hello from the RTC October is almost done and dusted. This month we had our hearing checked, computer class attended, Aquarobics and Zumba started again for the summer - both with good attendances; we met with our local City Councilor – Sue Blom; and the Seniors Going Places left for Vietnam. From all accounts they are really enjoying themselves albeit a bout of tummy bug for most of the group. With Sue VW away there will be no Community Shorts and in the spirit of the Community Shorts:- to those who have been under the weather – we hope you are beginning to feel on top of the world again and those celebrating a birthday, anniversary or any other significant event, have a wonderful time. Sue will be back in time for the December edition with much news from Vietnam. The Karaoke night was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. The singers sang up a storm and the dancers polished the floor. To those thinking about coming and didn’t, it was a great night. There will be more in the future. Thank you Bob (who sang at the Balgal Beach Markets a couple of weeks ago) for entertaining us with your wonderful voice, wit and charm and many thanks to both Lynda and Paul and Lynda’s son Greg, for providing the opportunity for a night of fun, singing and dancing. Thank you to Rhonda Schwarz for the donation of craft items to the Craft group and thank you to the people who have donated jars as requested. Christmas Carols is on again this year – Michael Blake will be MC’ing the evening, and the local schools will be entertaining us with Christmas Carols – Santa will be visiting with a small gift for all the children present; the words of the songs will be up on a screen if you want to sing along and the evening will end with a brilliant fireworks display. Everyone is encouraged to get up and sing their favourite songs, just call either Michael or me (Chris) to book your song choices. Our Zumba Instructor – Robyn Mills will be attending a 2 day workshop – Stay on your feet – Tai Chi. This workshop is designed to strengthen the muscles used to maintain good posture and to assist with better balance to prevent falls. Once Robyn has completed the workshop she will be able to pass on this knowledge in classes to be scheduled. Thank you Robyn for being open to this opportunity. Expression of Interest: In the new year the Rollingstone Rag will be looking for someone or people willing to take on the role to manage the Advertising Accounts, invoicing and a little bit of marketing for the Rag. This will be on a volunteer basis and will only take a small amount of time each month. If you are interested please call me (Chris) at the RTC for more details. Dates to remember: TCC Computer Classes 1st Friday of each month 11am - 10pm (1 November 2013) Aquarobics Tuesdays and Fridays 9am at the Rollingstone Caravan Park Pool Zumba on Fridays at 9am at the Community Hall. Natures Notes - Roy Mackay Not quite six inches of rain (142.5mm) since the end of May is all the rain we have had in Paluma. I have heard that you have had less than that in Rollingstone over the same period. Gardens have suffered. The strange weather patterns have had their effects on the birds and the rainforest and us too. Rainbow Lorikeets still visit a few bird tables here but we still do not get the numbers of birds we had before Yasi. However, we are getting the spring migrants, such as the storm birds (koels) and spangled drongos which you must be getting too. Black snakes, pink-tongue lizards, orange-thighed treefrogs and much smaller nursery frogs have all appeared now that spring has arrived. While we have had a few small bushfires around the Townsville countryside, we must all be shocked by the fires in New South Wales. So many people have lost everything - their homes, their cars and worst of all their prized possessions. And some of those fires were deliberately lit by a few of their neighbours. No penalty is severe enough for those perpetrators. While a lot of the vegetation will come back over a few years, much of the wildlife may never come back. Since the fire regime was established for the Paluma Range National Park 15 or more years ago, the wildlife seen along the Paluma Range Road has diminished to the point now that we never see a death adder or black-headed python or the annual April-May processionary caterpillar trails crossing the road. White-tailed rats, wallaroos, melomys rats or bandicoots are rarely sighted these days. Did you know that there is a cassowary reserve just a bit south of Rollingatone? The Upper Sleeper Log Creek Natuer Reserve of 1600 hectares was established to protect the cassowary and the black-throated finch. The reserve was established in August-Septermber 2008 and it runs from the Paluma Range to the coastal lowlands. Now you can understand that my question to you some months ago about sighting cassowaries near Cassowary creek had a good foundation. So now i can ask you if you have seen any black-throated finches lately - and where? Roy Mackay

Paluma In the Clouds

The Octoberfest on Saturday 5th October was a very convivial gathering and attracted a good crowd and, as always, the cooks of Paluma came up with a good spread and a Germanic tinge here and there. The Markets on the following day were quite well attended and as this is the first time we have had an October Public Holiday it bodes well for operation in future years. One would think it a little bit early for Christmas trade but none the less some customers declared that they were getting in early with their present purchasing. This was especially true of our regular wood-turner who not only sold gifts but also got orders for particular items. We are particularly pleased to have had a bit of a break from the drought conditions which have prevailed since June [except for 27 mm on 20th July]. October 19 was the first reasonable fall with 23mm and there was a follow up of 34mm at the 5 acre blocks where we live which was not reflected in the village. The Rainforest Inn was sold at auction on October 21 and it is understood that the take over will be in November. Best wishes for your retirement, Mick & Viv.

MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB Hello Golfers, Sorry for the delay in getting a monthly issue to you,but sometimes things go belly up for me. So here we go firstly we had better do some results. Mens Div 3 Don Anderson what,s that about the Ram and the Dam persistence will out good on you Don! Ladies Div 1 Pam McCarthy now where have I heard that name before must have been in my dreams but dreams do come true. Ladies Div 2 Cheryl Lloyd I have been wanting to write this name all year Cheryl has gone from a timid golfer to someone that tries very hard and is doing very well.Good on you Cheryl!! That's all the results for now, there is only 1 Medal to go and then all the winners come together to contest the finals, that being the Medal of Medalists Good luck to all the players. We had the Holden Scramble in late September and the usual suspects turned up to take the prizes, nothing new in that department. There is not a lot to report this time,I would like to take a little time to speak to all our members about new faces around the club from time to time. These people are not aliens they are people that might like to have a game and maybe, just maybe they will join our LITTLE club, and I do mean LITTLE (we need to do something about it in the way of welcoming new faces into the community and the club so we can grow). Perhaps we could ask others to make up a foursome for a game and not worrying about if they have a better handicap than you or me.Or heaven forbid the fact that they might not be OH SO good at the game, at the end of the day we need new members to keep us going. So please remember the story of the fish and the pond if you run out of water there wont be any fish any more. Now that I have had my say about membership lets all give it a go. Till next month Good Golfing Take care of each other..............Cheers Maree K.

P&C Association News The wine tasting evening at the Mystic Sands Golf Club was well supported. Thanks to Vonnie and Steve for hosting the event and thanks to all who attended. We’re already planning new and interesting activities for next year. Keep an eye out for our annual quiz night in May! The school Presentation Night will be 10 December. A Christmas Hamper will be raffled in the last week of school. We would be grateful if parents could drop off a non-perishable donation to the hamper from about mid-November. More details will come home in the school newsletter. We would love to see some new members of the P&C in 2014. You don’t have to be a parent of a child at the school, perhaps you have a child who may attend Rollingstone School in the future, or you may just have a little spare time to help us out at various events throughout the year? Meetings are run to the P&C Queensland format, with an agenda, finance report, Principal’s report and so on. Any member can nominate an agenda item in General Business. Minutes are taken and are lodged on the school website as soon as possible after each meeting. On that note@ The next P&C meeting is scheduled for Thursday 21 November at 3:15pm in the school library. New members are welcome. Meetings generally run for 1.5 to 2 hours. Cheers@@@@@@. Andrew Cripps MP Ph: 07 4776 1428 Member for Hinchinbrook Ingham Qld 4850 Fax:07 4776 3503 NEW EFFORT TO TACKLE YOUTH JUSTICE The concerns of local communities across Queensland have been heard loud and clear by the Newman Government when it comes to youth justice. We are introducing tough reforms that will strengthen the system to make juveniles more accountable for their actions. These initiatives target repeat young offenders. I have spoken to many people about their concerns that a revolving door of repeat offending for many young people has encouraged a generation of arrogant repeat young offenders, due to Labor’s slap on wrist approach. This is unacceptable and the LNP is doing something about it. To make them more accountable for their actions, the identities of repeat young offenders will soon be permitted to be published. Publishing the identity of first time offenders will continue to be prohibited, These amendments strike a balance between kids who have made one silly mistake and those who are repeat offenders. We are also setting a strong deterrent for recidivism, introducing a new offence for breaching bail, carrying a maximum penalty of one year in detention. Other reforms include making juvenile criminal histories available in adult courts, removing detention as a last resort and transferring juvenile offenders to adult correctional centres when they reach 17 years of age if they have six or more months of their sentence remaining. These reforms are part of our youth justice blueprint, including new laws to force graffiti vandals to clean up their mess, allow the crushing and indefinite seizure of hooning cars, increased penalties for assaulting and evading police and diverting young people into our boot camp trials.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB I have to start this months report with a huge congratulations to our Dunn Cup team of Michael, Peter, Graeme and Wally who performed extremely well in this most prestigious event. While the guys only won a couple of matches, they finished with a positive points for and against with their losses ranging from one to three shots. With an ounce of luck they could have been in the final which would have been an unbelievable result given the amount of depth in the Townsville clubs. Well done guys , again you have done our little club proud. On Sunday November 5th, we will again be hosting our Pineapple Fours. This is the flagship event on our bowling calendar and has always been well supported by the various district clubs. This year is no exception with the maximum number of fourteen teams being filled very quickly. With $1000 prizemoney up for grabs, the competition will be fierce, but as usual will be tempered by great camaraderie and good humour. Our sincere thanks go out to our major sponsor ( Pace Farming ) and to the Golf Resort for offsetting some of our costs. We look forward to a great day of renewing friendships and competitive bowls. It was terrific to see another new lady grace our green recently ( welcome Maureen ) after she and husband Paul accepted an invitation to participate in a couple of “come and try” Monday sessions for aspiring bowlers. Maureen had a ball in her first social game and we look forward to her continued involvement. As the weather heats up the amount of games and participation understandardly begins to decrease and this year is no exception. We will continue to maintain our Saturday game until mid December and then shut down until February. Next year, we will be introducing a mid week morning game to enable more people to enjoy our great game as there are a number of mothers (in particular) who are keen to `have a go ' in a more convenient time slot. As usual , please direct any enquiries to Phil Small on 0418 779 292.

This WAS Townsville!!

Gidday Rollingstone, OK@ one more time – in big, bold, red letters so it gets everyone’s attention:

IF YOU FIND ONE OF THESE - DON’T

TOUCH IT CALL ME OR 000 IMMEDIATELY and DON’T TOUCH IT You won’t be doing me any favours by picking it up or moving it somewhere safe and you DEFINITELY won’t be helping me out by bringing it to me. PLEASE@ leave it where you find it and get in touch with me or 000 straight away. Now@ have you heard the one about the SP Bookie who supplements his income by running a respectable local business, or the sly grog trader who drinks part of his trade before it gets into the boat and then rings up and dobs on the baddies? Or what about the policeman who sells and smokes pot straight from the exhibit room? There’s always the one about the business owner who supports his family by selling stolen tools out of the back of his car or the retired soldier who manages a brothel on a part time basis so he can send money back to the three women in Thailand that he has children to (God bless Viagra – stopping old men from rolling out of bed for a decade or more). Seriously – if I had a dollar for every rumour and half baked bollocks story that gets around this place, I’d buy the pub, the servo, the golf club, the Landing and Rosco’s, rename the whole place “Goughyville” and spend the rest of my days being accused of gargling bong water on the beach. And I’d probably have enough money left over for a decent coffee machine as well. I’ve had a few queries about Troy’s departure since I mentioned it last month and I think it might need a little clarification in so far as “why” it’s happened. Troy came to me a little while ago and had decided that working in a small station wasn’t quite what he’d hoped it would be. He made the decision that his style of police work was more suited to a larger station environment. After looking at the options, Ayr Station had the vacancy and Troy was the man for the job. Now I’d love to be able to give you the big news about who the next Senior Constable will be – trust me when I tell you that nobody@ NOBODY@ will be happier than me to have that person in this community (see, now you’re thinking that it might be a girl, aren’t you. How do you think you’d go with a policewoman up here? I reckon that’d be gold.) Many thanks to all of the imaginative souls who came up with alternative names for the “Coppers Log” although nobody gets the gong for the cuppa with scones and jam and cream at the police station. Some suggestions were just a little bit long while others were just a bit too@ For example: “Ranting and Raving – from The Grumpy Baldy Old Copper” – go easy on the old stuff hey – I’m a bit sensitive. “Dribble and other Rubbish – Everything You Don’t Want to Hear” – the truth hurts, but OK “Waffle from the Pig Pen” – really?@ Pig Pen?? And my personal favourite@ “Somebody Make Him Stop - S*** the Sergeant Says” – I liked this one but like I’ve said before kids – this is a family show. I think I’ve strung this out long enough, don’t you? Let’s summarize this months article: 1. DON’T TOUCH IT – pretty simple. Seriously@ DON’T 2. If you haven’t heard a good rumour by 10 o’clock – feel free to use one of mine. 3. Troy’s gone – no news on the new copper yet – maybe another good rumour. And finally 4. Jenny and I get all the scones for coming up with the best names for the Coppers Log. Stay safe..............Goughy

Rollingstone & District SenOn the 16th October a group of 26 Seniors took off for about 4 weeks holiday in Vietnam. I, for one, am looking forward eagerly to hearing all about their holiday on their return. Seniors are looking for someone to be a caller at Bingo next year. Anyone interested in doing this should contact either myself (Claire) on 4770-7258, or Chris at the Community Hall on 4770-7855. The Seniors Christmas party this year will be on the 6th December 2013 at the Community Hall commencing at 11.30am – getting everyone seated, with dinner at 12 noon. The cost will be $13.00 per head and the theme is either hippy or nursery rhyme characters. So ladies this gives you the opportunity to dress up as either Red Riding Hood, Cinderella (or maybe the Ugly Sisters!) or Sleeping Beauty, and if you bring your partner why not come as Jack and Jill! Those attending should contact either myself (Claire) on 4770-7258 or Chris at the Community Hall on 4770-7855 as soon as possible so that we can give numbers to our caterer. Those Seniors who missed out on the Denise Drysdale Concert due to the Council and/or transport organisers picking them up too late have been advised by the Council that they will be given free passes to Morning Melodies to be held on the 26th November. Wasn’t that nice of them? Our Op Shop has been re-organised and now looks very smart, with much more room to browse through and some good bargains to be had. And to finish, a joke: The 98 year old Mother Superior lay dying. The nuns gathered round her bed trying to make her last journey more comfortable. They tried giving her warm milk to drink but she refused it. One of the nuns took the glass back into the kitchen, then, remembering a bottle of Irish Whiskey that had been received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk. Back at Mother Superior’s bed they held the glass to her lips. The frail num drank a little, then a little more, and before they knew it she had finished the whole glass down to the last drop. As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their Spiritual Leader. “Mother” the nuns asked earnestly, “please give us some words of wisdom before you leave us.” the Mother Superior raised herself up in bed on one elbow, looked at them, and said: “DON’T SELL THAT COW!” That’s all for now, look after each other..........................Claire 10

Confused about Syria? About why the USA, EU or NATO haven't intervened as they did in Libya? This (abridged) statement from Dr Elizabeth Kendall of the Religious Liberty Commission in Melbourne has given the clearest exposition of the problem for me; I hope it helps, and does not confuse further! “The war in Syria is complex and multi-faceted: For the region's religious minorities and all other pro-Assad Syrians it is all about surviving in a state that is secular and free. For the Muslim Brotherhood and other fundamentalist Sunnis, it is all about the restoration of Sunni power (as it was pre-World War 1). For Turkey's President Erdogan, it is about expanding Turkey's sphere of influence (as in Ottoman times). For Iran and Hezballah, it is about maintaining a strategic alliance: the Shi'ite crescent, which is essentially an arch of Iranian influence. For the USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, it is all about weakening grand-nemesis Iran by taking a massive piece out of the Shi'ite crescent. For the Arabs, it is also about restoring Syria to the Arab axis. For Russia, it is about a strategic alliance, Orthodox Christians and not empowering al-Qaeda and other jihadis. For al-Qaeda, it is about controlling territory and establishing bases. Furthermore, the war in Syria is also about which axis - the US-ArabTurkey axis or the Russia-Persia axis - will control the flow of natural gas from the Persian Gulf to Europe via Syria. Indeed, the key element virtually in all of this is Arab, Sunni Syria's strategic alliance with Persian, Shi'ite Iran.........................................Dr Bruce Sommer

R.S.L. NEWS REMEMBRANCE DAY- Monday, 11th of November 2013. The service will be held at BUSHY PARKER PARK, Rollingstone. Time- beginning at 10:40 am to coincide with the traditional 2 minutes silence at 11o’clock. This year the service will, as has become traditional, be supported by the RAAF. The service personnel do a wonderful job by providing a Catafalque Party, flag bearers and a guest speaker. It is pleasing to see these young men and women dressed so neatly, taking pride in their appearance, and willingly participating in a service to remember those who are currently serving, or have served our country, in previous years. If you can, please be there. Following the service we adjourn to the Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club for refreshments and you have an opportunity to meet and talk to these young people if you so desire. Rollingstone RSL Christmas Party will be on Saturday, 14th December at the Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club. Beginning around 6:30 am please join us for a fun night. All members and supporters are most welcome. We will endeavour to keep the cost as low as possible. I think it was $30 last year, plus $5 for raffle prizes which are drawn throughout the evening. The RSL subsidises the cost as a thank you for your support throughout the year. We have organised the RADCA bus and Tony Richards has volunteered to drive for us again this year. Further details in the December news! It has happened again. Early in October, the jackpot of $620 went to Tony Griffiths (Mitre 5)! Tony has supported the Goose Club from the start, so well done to him. A deserving recipient. However, you could be lucky enough to win it on your first go. So if you are looking for somewhere to go on a Friday night, come over to Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club for a relaxing evening. If you know you can’t get there till after 6pm, please give the club a call and we can organise a number or some numbers for you in the Goose Club. Vonnie and Tamara will be there to take your call and they can put your name on one of the spare numbers. Numbers are $2 and you have the opportunity to win with 10 prize draws. The jackpot is currently around $240 and thanks must go to Steve and Vonnie for providing a $100 to start a new jackpot and for donating $20 each week to enable the jackpot to grow. Raffles are $2 for the meat tray and $1 for a bottle of spirits or a $30 club voucher. Great value as we only sell 50 tickets in each raffle. Thank you to Col, Linda, Judie, Faye, Rob, Gloria, Tony R, Mick, Vonnie and Ash for helping sell raffles over the last month. This assistance is much appreciated. If you are new to our area, enjoy the facilities available. Have a meal, with our new chef Bill. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is friendly. Bonus- you don’t have to do the dishes. If you were in the services you are most welcome to join the Rollingstone RSL as a service member. We also have associate membership, for those related to a service person, or social membership for anyone interested in joining our club. We use the Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club as our home base and we have raffles and a Goose Club every Friday night from about 5pm. Hoping to see many of our community at the REMEMBRANCE DAY service. ...............Cheers, Rhonda.

MATT & NANCY’S MYSTIC DUNES WEDDING The big day finally came after 14 years….We shared the day with so many close family and friends at Mystic Sands Beach. North Qld weather was perfect and the Bride was fashionably late, brides undies were lost and a quick call to brides father and sisters sorted that out. The brides ring was forgotten and a mad dash back home was made, beautiful vows were exchanged, the ring was dropped, the kiss was had and the hat was thrown. Papers were signed and the wedding car sank deep into the sand upon leaving . The boys sorted it out, but not without a high vis vest, some muscle power and almost help from Poppys 4wd. What a day!!! After the ceremony we all gathered at the hall for the celebrations. The dinner was superb, all prepared by the special team of Lyons that had it under control at every turn. A crazy speech from Jane(clan member) had the guests in stitches. Dancing followed and we will never forget the spectacular fireworks that Ian Thompson and Raymond Pace organized for us. It was so special for all to watch and went for ages ending with two firework hearts and an I LUV U. Our big day wouldn’t have been what we wanted without the army of helpers, family, friends and people we have never met opened their hearts to be a part of the mission to get the job done. A massive thank you to our main organizers Dowie, the wedding planner and my sister Eve Watts, our backbone that got things done…You guys are amazing and both of us appreciate your help, patience, passion and commitment you put into our wedding. We owe you bigtime. Many months of planning and organizing such a huge task to have our perfect day. We had 90 adults and 30 children attending. We even opened our own caravan park on Mystic Ave for a few weeks. We now know a little more about septic systems! Thanks to Mysic Sands Golf course for putting on Nancy’s 40 Birthday party last Thursday. It was a great afternoon out with all playing barefoot bowls, a few drinks and top catering by the club. Thanks to the team of Lyons. Family and friends- Jim & Leni Ingram, Jennifer & Ian, Trevor and Carmel, Tricia & Michael, Bec & Brett, Kathy & Doone, Leah, Olivia & Michael, cousins and our young boys Brenton , Luke & Joel. Most of all thank you for all the great memories created forever. If you are ever thinking of getting married this is the place, beautiful surroundings with brilliant people. Matt & Nancy Ingram

The Art Of a Good Marriage A good marriage must be created. In a marriage, the little things are big things, It is never being too old to hold hands, It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day, It is never going to sleep angry, It is having mutual values and common objectives, It is standing together to face the world, It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family, It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways, It is having the capacity to forgive and forget, It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow, It is a common search for the good and the beautiful, It is not only marrying the right person, it is being the right partner. Persistence, Respectful, Responsible

Swimming Swimming at Rollingstone Caravan Beach Resort has started. Staff, students and parents/carers travelled in a convoy to be greeted by the most beautiful view in North Queensland. Everyone had a fabulous time and we sincerely thank the resort for allowing us access to continue to improve student skills and confidence in, and around, water. Year 7 Graduation Rory Barry is our graduating student for 2013. To make his graduation memorable, all parents, students and staff are attending his graduation ceremony being held at the Ingham RSL on Thursday the 12th of December. Computer equipment The school is in the process of replacing computers. The following items are available for free if anyone can make use of them: computer screens keyboards computer mouses head phones

Colour shapes is a basic counting app that has audio so does not rely on children being able to read. Great for the early stages of kindergarten.

Concentration is an NCTM (National Council for Teachers of Mathematics) app. It is basically a game of concentration; however, players can change the content. The app covers a range of content in number starting at subsidising, all the way through to equivalent fractions. Very useful for building fluency.

Red Dragonfly Mathematics Challenge app is actually a problem-solving book that has been adapted for the iPad. It has a good range of problems and their answers, but is not interactive. Students need to record their working on paper.

HERE TO HELP !!!

So… I have checked the calendar and yes it’s true, there is only 8 weeks to go until Santa arrives. C’mon now…. you are allowed to be just a little excited about this!!! The shops are filling up quickly with all the wonderful Christmas stock. I don’t know about anyone else, but I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping. By the time you receive this newsletter the Community Association AGM will be done & dusted. The full details of the new committee are on the Notice Board and will also be in the December Newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to all members and volunteers who have supported the Community Association throughout the year. Your enormous support & help for Raffles, Lucky Numbers, Australia Day Celebrations, Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle, Northern Beaches Festival, and Community Sausage Sizzles has been wonderful and very much appreciated from all the committee for 2013. I would like to take this opportunity to promote a small family owned business that the Community Association purchased printer cartridges from. I was very impressed with the outstanding professional and ‘Speedy’service that was shown to me from Sarah at Speedy Cartridges. Their prices were bargain basement prices compared to other companies. I would certainly recommend this company for their very reliable service. Website: www.speedycartridge.com.au Email: admin@speedycartridge.com.au

Don’t forget, the Toomulla Beach Community Association Inc. Christmas Party is on Saturday 30thNovember. Everyone would have received a flyer, which was delivered to your mailbox. It promises to be a great night with a large range of food and lots of good company. Lots of fun for everyone!! Please come along and help celebrate the year. I hope to see you there. You can phone 47707813 (Rhonda) for more details or to book a seat. RSVP – Wednesday 20th November. The Christmas Raffle is up and going and only $1 per ticket. The wheelbarrow full of food and refreshments looks great. The raffle will be drawn at the Christmas Party and the winner will be notified if not there. Well congratulations to Grandma Kerry & Poppy Cameron on the arrival of their beautiful healthy Grandson Alex in October. Mum, Dad & sister Macey are also very happy & excited with the new edition to their lovely family. He is a beautiful baby. For those people who are going away on holidays early, may you all have a safe and joyous holiday. Please, remember to let your neighbor know that you are going away and ask them to keep an eye on your property until your return. Happy Birthday to all those who have a birthday in November, and congratulations if you are celebrating a special occasion. Rhonda.

WARNING Toxic canisters are still being found on Queensland Beaches with one being handed into the Rollingstone Police Station. The Toomulla resident found the canister a few weeks ago on the beach near his residence and contacted police. The canisters have been washing up on Queensland beaches since October last year with canisters being found as far south as the Gold Coast. This is the sixth canister that has washed up in the Rollingstone area so far. It is suspected that the canister contains the poisonous substance Aluminum Phosphate that is a colorless, flammable and highly toxic gas. Police are asking residents to report any sightings of the canisters and importantly DO NOT TOUCH THEM….see page 9 for a photo of the cannisters

Balgal Home Bible Fellowship Remember Pinatubo? No, he wasn't that brilliant Brazilian soccer player. Pinatubo was that volcano in the Philippines that erupted in June 1991. Even in Australia, the huge volume of volcanic ash that it ejected into the sky was evident in blazing orange and red sunsets and sunrises for weeks. Among the Aeta, or 'aboriginal' tribes of northern Luzon the impact was much more personal. The mountain blew 260meters (about 860feet) off its summit, and spewed out an estimated 5 billion cubic meters of grey, gritty ash. The ash rose 34 kilometers into the atmosphere, forming a cloud 400 kilometers across. This fell, and filled in river beds, covered rice fields, and settled on the thatched roofs of the 30,000 villagers immediate to the mountain. The ash covered about 7,500 square kilometers. Unfortunately tropical storm Yunya then deposited heavy rainfall in the area, and the weight of ash and retained water on many roofs caused them to collapse, killing the inhabitants. A total of 847 people are known to have died, 23 are still missing, and more than a million people were displaced – many by evacuation to safer ground. [The photo shows some boys standing on the roof of their schoolhouse buried in ash.] One report has it: “Considered an inheritance from their ancestors, Pinatubo is the place where the Aetas believe they can freely commune with departed spirits of their forefathers whom they believe inhabit the animals, trees and mounds of earth that abound there. Traditionally animists, the Aetas have considered Pinatubo as sanctuary as they struggle to survive through game hunting and crop-gathering while holding fast to their pagan practice of animal and tree worship. More than a home and a sanctuary of worship, however, Pinatubo is the Aetas’ ‘Holy of Holies’, the inner sanctum where their supreme God, the Apo na Mallari, dwells. “ [ABS-CBN Broadcasting.] So the eruption caused not only massive population displacement, but an economic disaster for those whose livelihoods depended on rice crops. Further, the Bucao River silted up with ash, and began to break its banks and flood Botolan whenever a storm passed – and that's frequently. Walking up the river, only ankle deep in the water of their 'Dry' season, I was told that about 100 people were buried beneath my feet. It was an eery experience. The humanitarian relief from government, missions and other NGOs was great, but still inadequate. Money, food and even small cement-block houses could not make up the cultural disconnection from their traditional lands and economies, their spiritual disorientation and their communal unity. These are still expressed through the Sambal Botolan language (this is one of more than 60 spoken in the archipeligo). The Balgal Home Bible Fellowship and its members have been trying to ease the distress of this group by supporting a pastor who speaks the language, and is located in Botolan itself. He visits the displaced Sambal Botolan people in the area, and seeks to provide where possible encouragement and reorientation to another economy – necessary still even 22 years on. He supports his family through a livelihood venture funded by the Fellowship, and gets about the scattered Sambal Botolan community on a motor driven tricycle donated for his use.
