AWARD WINS FOR FAMILY-OWNED Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa
Champagne corks have been popping at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa after the venue was crowned the winner of two prestigious East Anglian Daily Times Business Awards 2013. At the glittering prizegiving awards dinner in July, the Hotel scooped the Family Business of the Year Award as well as the Business Broadband Initiative Award. They were also voted runner up for the Business of the Year Award out of fifteen category winners.
Situated on the Suffolk/Essex border in stunning Constable Country within an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” the four star Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is part of a family owned group of companies which started over 70 years ago as a 120 acre apple farm. The Hotel now offers eighty contemporary style bedrooms, two championship golf courses, a conference and banqueting complex, a spa and fitness centre, the two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant, golf clubhouse, retail shops and covered driving range. Just recently five exquisite self-catered Country Lodges were created, overlooking the lake and rolling fairways. Founders Bill and Devora Peake were true entrepreneurs and launched the Copella fruit juice brand in 1969 (sold to Tropicana UK in 1998), and 3 years later created Stoke by Nayland Golf Club - which has now developed into the thriving hotel, lodges, golf and spa resort that it is today. Bill died in 1979, and Devora in 1999, but the next generation had already started working with them in the business in the late ‘70s, and have continued to build on the success of their legacy. Susanna Rendall is Group Managing Director, and her siblings Tamara Unwin, Carmella Meyer and Jonathan Loshak, as well as her son Robert Rendall, are all executive board directors.
The Awards judges, Birketts Solicitors, commented, “Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa has a highly developed governance and ownership structure. There seems to be a clear undercurrent of family values in the way in which the business is managed and operated. It is a very dynamic business and there has clearly been a significant amount of investment in providing a comprehensive range of facilities and a quality service.” Susanna Rendall, Managing Director said: “Receiving this award means so much not only to the family but also to all of our staff across our three companies who we consider to be part of our extended family, and it is wonderful that all our hard work and commitment has been recognised in this way.” Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa also won the Business Broadband Initiative Award in recognition of the excellent creative use of broadband technology which has transformed all three businesses, increasing their internet speeds from under 1 Mbps to 20Mbps. Hotel guests can now enjoy all the benefits that superfast broadband can provide. Hot off the press is the latest news that Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is one of the three finalists in the “Best Large Hotel of the Year” category in the 2013 Essex Tourism and Hospitality Awards.
