The Delights of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast KATHY C HUR C HILL Turkey is a country steeped in history

and, if you know where to look, you will find unspoilt villages with bougainvillea-covered terraces, crystal clear seas and wonderfully hospitable people. It is also perfect for families as we discovered when we visited the southwest coast last year. We rented a villa in Dalyan, a bustling market town strung along the river that links the warm waters of the Mediterranean to the serenely beautiful Koycegiz Lake. No need for a car as water taxis line the riverbanks, piled high with cushions, all jostling for attention and, for just a few lira, will take you down


to Iztuzu beach, famous for its loggerhead turtles or up river and across the lake to the market at Koycegiz or even just to a quiet bay to drop anchor and swim. At night the waterfront comes to life, fairy lights twinkle across the river advertising a great range of small restaurants, families congregate in the Main Square and benches fill with elderly Turkish gentlemen discussing the day’s events. The excellent food markets meant the chefs amongst us had fun experimenting with a range of exotic ingredients, although, after a few chilled glasses of rose the banana pancakes and vanilla milkshakes at our local cafe were always so tempting!

The children flourished in this balmy climate and soon had us exploring a host of activities. We took out a gulet (a traditional sailing yatch), from local Fethiye and I can’t believe that there is a better way to explore the hidden bays and inlets of this dramatic coastline. We all enjoyed diving off the boat into the crystal clear sea and the snorkelling was a revelation for the younger children. The mud baths on Lake Koycegiz were also great fun. The video of us all slipping into the warm gooey mud pools and then lining up on the wall to allow it to dry, so that we looked like some bizarre long lost tribe, is now a firm family favourite. Turkey also has many

TRAVEL classical sites, so for a cultural interlude one morning, we trekked to the almost deserted ancient ruins of Kaunos to stand in its impressive theatre. For the Dads I recommend a visit to the Turkish barber for the ‘full works’; a cutthroat razor shave; face mask and hot

flannels; eyebrow and nose-hair trim and, the piece de resistance, a flaming candle to the ears! The whole family squashed in to watch this spectacle but thankfully he must have been used to such a rowdy crowd as his hand held steady. For Mums a trip to a traditional steam bath is an absolute must. Leave your dignity and clothes in the changing room and surrender to an hour of scrubbing, slapping, cleansing, soap bubbles and deep massage that will leave you glowing from head to foot. After two weeks of clear blue skies, warm seas and fresh local food we had all fallen in love with Turkey and felt there was genuine warmth to the hospitality here. If you are looking for ideas for this year then I would strongly recommend you give it a try.

They have a wonderful collection of luxury villas and hotels and their level of service and local knowledge is exceptional.

fabulous Deniz Feneri on the Kas Peninsular and had the most amazing lunch in the Caribbean beach bar style restaurant down by the sea. Needless to say he was suitably impressed and Holmes believes that Turkey is now well and truly on the way to becoming a new and exciting destination.

Whilst we were there Martin met up with some of their team and visited Kalkan, further along the coast, to see some of the boutique hotels that are causing such a buzz.

Practical Magic in the Garden KATE LEITH & LISA FIN C H

In the last edition we talked about garden design in general, this time we examine a current project to give readers an insight into the design process.

Church Cottage has a traditional hedged cottage garden, set within three acres of grassland. Our brief was to design and plant a long border for the existing garden and develop the surrounding field to provide a wildflower meadow, specimen trees, a summer house and a formal garden. Our client wanted the garden to be in keeping with its rural location, but with a sophisticated, playful surprise somewhere.


Garden designers have to be practical as well as creative, since projects invariably present constraints. One factor in this case was that familiar feature of the local countryside: overhead telephone cables, which crossed a corner of the field. These meant the only suitable spot for the formal garden was a trapezium-shaped area not suitable for a traditional oblong or square parterre. From this spot we could see the beautiful rose window of the church we had earlier stopped to admire and after which the cottage is named, and so the concept of a circular parterre echoing the design of the window was born. We knew our client was keen to be bold and adventurous – just the sort of client we like! – so we proposed a dramatic serpentine outer Yew hedge enclosing a parterre of Box and intersected by brick paths with gravel surrounds. The Box shapes could be planted with roses or herbaceous perennials if desired.

Having established our concept, we proposed two further circular areas of the same 18m diameter, to create a sense of coherence in the garden overall. These key areas would be linked by a meandering grassy path which our client would enjoy cutting on his rideon mower into the longer meadow grass, reducing maintenance time and retaining a natural look in the garden as a whole. The mown path would surround a circular wildflower meadow and then continue around the grounds to encircle the parterre. From where it would continue to an area behind the house where it would take a spiral route beneath a group of native specimen trees and finally lead to a bespoke summer house.

Our client loved the design, so the next step was to provide potential contractors with detailed construction drawings for the parterre so that we would receive unambiguous quotations for the ground works. The accurate setting out of the parterre was crucial, so this was carefully drawn. With quotations in, a contractor was chosen and work got under way in January 2012. The turf was scraped off and the ground thoroughly prepared for the Yew, which makes a fantastic, low maintenance, longlived hedge but must have adequate drainage. With the outer hedge in place, work on the paths could begin, our client having selected handmade, rustic paving bricks. The Box was then planted and gravel laid. Our client is delighted with his new formal garden. The Yew hedge will only grow about 30cm a year so will take time to reach shoulder height but we think it will be worth the wait. The transformation of this garden into a magical space for our client and his family continues as a neglected pond is brought back to life, the summer house is built and specimen trees are planted in the autumn.
