Welcome Welcome to our spring / summer edition of Essex Lifestyles Magazine. Finally spring appears to have sprung and not a moment too soon! As we now enter the traditional time in the housing market to get your home on the market we are looking forward to further levels of increased activity. The market this year has seen a number of sales being agreed from able purchasers. Some of this will be due to the unprecedented weather that we have experienced so far, another reason is that there still remains an appetite for property that was unfulfilled in the last couple of years. However a word of caution, whilst there are willing buyers in the market place your asking prices need to remain competitive in order to find your perfect buyer. Why choose Fine & Country? All of our properties are marketed using professional photography, full detailed floor plans and a booklet style glossy brochure. Add this to our subscription to the major leading websites, it’s no wonder we succeed where others fail. Our head office is situated in Park Lane, Mayfair and all our clients’ properties are available at this London office. We have over 300 Fine & Country offices across the country and indeed international outlets as well. I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Essex Lifestyles, if you would like your property to appear in the autumn edition then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be only too delighted to assist with your move. Your Chance to win two hospitality tickets to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show From today, Fine & Country and its guest judge, Martyn Cox, Gardening Columnist, Mail On Sunday are scouring the nation in search of the finest gardens on sale with a UK estate agent. Green fingered vendors will have the chance to win two hospitality tickets to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show by entering their shapely landscapes, colourful plants, spectacular water features and follies. Entrants and winners will also have the opportunity of free additional media exposure as part of a national campaign to highlight the importance of garden presentation when selling your home. We need your help in choosing the best gardens which will be tweeted and displayed on Fine & Country’s Facebook Page under five different price categories. One finalist from each category will be chosen by Facebook users clicking ‘like’ on their favourite garden, as well as being judged by Bill McClintock, gardening enthusiast and Head of The Ombudsman Scheme of Estate Agents. The overall winner shall then be chosen by gardening guru, Martyn Cox, who will personally present the winner with hospitality tickets to attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on Thursday, 24th May 2012. Matthew Pryke, CEO of Fine & Country says: “Receiving the accolade of the best garden for sale in the UK will raise the credibility of your home to potential buyers. The judging will consider gardens of all varieties so don’t be put off from entering if your garden is for example small and urban. Even the tiniest of gardens can be carefully constructed, beautifully presented and unique. We even want to know a little bit about yourself and the stories behind the creation of your gardens.”

Stylish Solutions for your Ablutions K I M B E E D I E l o o k s at t h e g r o w i n g t r e n d f o r l u x u r y b at h r o o m s o l u t i o n s Bathrooms often get overlooked in terms of design, but what can often be the smallest room in the home has become one of the most important. The bathroom has become a haven, a private space to get away from the stresses and strains of the day, the one space you can literally lock yourself away and spend time on your health and wellbeing. Much like the kitchen, the bathroom has moved away from it’s basic functionality to a space from which we now demand much more. With the
hugh growth in popularity of the spa retreat as a weekend or holiday option for recharging our batteries, so the desire to recreate the atmosphere and quality of a spa at home has become a big trend. Luxury hotel and spa chic has filtered down to home style in every way and as a result our bathrooms have changed dramatically. From state of the art mood enhancing led lighting schemes, to hydrotherapy baths and massaging showers. From twin basin arrangements and sunken
baths, to concealed sound systems, you really can create a 5 star experience while carrying out your ablutions. With the enormous and ever expanding range of bathroom finishes, fittings and accessories as well as whole room concepts such as steam and sauna rooms available, one can easily achieve the ‘spa’ style. With choice however also comes confusion and a few important points should be kept in mind when planning your new bathroom. Along with a firm idea of the style you want to create, think in detail of utility first. Take into account the way that your family use the bathroom. Do you need two basins, a bath and shower or just one or the other, maybe you require a seat within your shower area? Do you need big tiled areas for small children who will splash around or can you allow for more opulent and intricate tile and mirror solutions for a more grown up room. Your basic plan is often restricted to your space but most bathroom suppliers will offer a planning solution free. However beautiful your bathroom, it has to work smoothly and efficiently as well as providing a space for you to recover and relax after a long day.

TIPS & STYLE EMPORIUM
Whatever your budget or bathroom size there are a host of tricks to give your bathroom a luxe look. Keep finishes really simple and elegant and invest your money in a stunning bathtub, beautiful basin... or even two... or an 1 amazing body pummeling shower. One show stopping piece is a better approach to add impact than trying to spread your budget evenly. Large tiles exude luxury and can be used on both walls and floors. Individual tiles can measure anything up to an impressive 40 x 80 cm. Fix tiles horizontally to make a room look
wider or use narrow grout lines to make the room seem like it is fully clad. This brings that slick ‘hotel look’ into your home. At the other end of the tile scale are glass and ceramic mosaic tiles. This can add a more expressive touch of luxury as you can now have elaborate artworks reproduced in mosaic. Use a metallic tile as part of your range to add a whiff of glamour.

Lighting has become an integral part of contemporary bathroom schemes. Creating just the right levels of accent and ambient light in any space can really alter your experience of using it. Andrew Fisher from The Norwich Architectural Lighting Company says, “The installation of small Led's can provide accent lighting to tiled areas in shower cubicles and mark the edges of baths and panels. If separately switched in the bathroom from the main ambient lighting these fittings give a low light alternative in which to unwind after a long day.”

The Delights of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast KATHY C HUR C HILL Turkey is a country steeped in history
and, if you know where to look, you will find unspoilt villages with bougainvillea-covered terraces, crystal clear seas and wonderfully hospitable people. It is also perfect for families as we discovered when we visited the southwest coast last year. We rented a villa in Dalyan, a bustling market town strung along the river that links the warm waters of the Mediterranean to the serenely beautiful Koycegiz Lake. No need for a car as water taxis line the riverbanks, piled high with cushions, all jostling for attention and, for just a few lira, will take you down
to Iztuzu beach, famous for its loggerhead turtles or up river and across the lake to the market at Koycegiz or even just to a quiet bay to drop anchor and swim. At night the waterfront comes to life, fairy lights twinkle across the river advertising a great range of small restaurants, families congregate in the Main Square and benches fill with elderly Turkish gentlemen discussing the day’s events. The excellent food markets meant the chefs amongst us had fun experimenting with a range of exotic ingredients, although, after a few chilled glasses of rose the banana pancakes and vanilla milkshakes at our local cafe were always so tempting!
The children flourished in this balmy climate and soon had us exploring a host of activities. We took out a gulet (a traditional sailing yatch), from local Fethiye and I can’t believe that there is a better way to explore the hidden bays and inlets of this dramatic coastline. We all enjoyed diving off the boat into the crystal clear sea and the snorkelling was a revelation for the younger children. The mud baths on Lake Koycegiz were also great fun. The video of us all slipping into the warm gooey mud pools and then lining up on the wall to allow it to dry, so that we looked like some bizarre long lost tribe, is now a firm family favourite. Turkey also has many
fineandcountry.com classical sites, so for a cultural interlude one morning, we trekked to the almost deserted ancient ruins of Kaunos to stand in its impressive theatre. For the Dads I recommend a visit to the Turkish barber for the ‘full works’; a cutthroat razor shave; face mask and hot
flannels; eyebrow and nose-hair trim and, the piece de resistance, a flaming candle to the ears! The whole family squashed in to watch this spectacle but thankfully he must have been used to such a rowdy crowd as his hand held steady. For Mums a trip to a traditional steam bath is an absolute must. Leave your dignity and clothes in the changing room and surrender to an hour of scrubbing, slapping, cleansing, soap bubbles and deep massage that will leave you glowing from head to foot. After two weeks of clear blue skies, warm seas and fresh local food we had all fallen in love with Turkey and felt there was genuine warmth to the hospitality here. If you are looking for ideas for this year then I would strongly recommend you give it a try.
We booked our trip with Holmes Travel (where Martin, my husband is a director) using Exclusive Escapes, an excellent tour operator who specialise in this unexplored area of the Lycian Coast. fabulous Deniz Feneri on the Kas Peninsular and had the most amazing lunch in the Caribbean beach bar style restaurant down by the sea. Needless to say he was suitably impressed and Holmes believes that Turkey is now well and truly on the way to becoming a new and exciting destination.
Whilst we were there Martin met up with some of their team and visited Kalkan, further along the coast, to see some of the boutique hotels that are causing such a buzz.
Exclusive Escapes has just announced the introduction of its new flagship flight from the Private Jet Terminal at Stansted direct to Dalaman. In the air the service also far exceeds your normal charter flight, with 25% fewer seats and a complimentary meal and full bar service.
The stylish and intimate Kalkan Regency has the well deserved reputation of being one of the finest hotels along this Turkish Coast. The new private suites here have been elegantly designed using feature walls of glass and the grounds have been extended so that there are new lawns and hidden terraces dotted with hammocks in shady places. The uber-chic Hotel Villa Mahal is another gem, with its curved white walls spilling down towards the sea where you can swim off jetties into clear, warm, deep water. Variety is key at Scutchers Scutchers today • Restaurant open for lunch and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays • Pre-booked private functions (min. 12/max. 50) tailored to your needs • Bespoke weddings, funerals and other family occasions (numbers more flexible) • Conference and meeting facilities with catering as required Regulars at Scutchers,
the popular awardwinning restaurant in the village of Long Melford in West Suffolk, have been delighted to find that owners Nick and Diane Barrett have had a change of mind about closing their restaurant business in that they have, since early January, been opening for lunch and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. Lunch from 12 noon till 2.00 pm (last orders) and dinner from 7.00 pm till 9.30 (last orders). In addition, they are using their beautiful former Hall House for a wide range of small private parties, bespoke weddings, funeral teas, conferences and meetings. Also blossoming is their take-away business and their ever popular award-winning smoked salmon which is prepared and smoked in the traditional manner using only the best organically farmed salmon from Shetland, the finest sea salt and the best oak clippings before being sliced and packed by hand.
Other specialities, on their take-away menu, include pots of smoked salmon mousse and a wide variety of tasty soups, sauces and gravies to suit the meals of your choice. For more information, see www.scutchers.com Variety is key at Scutchers given that, in addition to their restaurant and outside catering enterprise, Nick and Diane are developing the idea of regular Cookery demonstrations, a Wine Club and a Scutchers ‘market’ – an opportunity to purchase many of the Scutchers favourites.
Also recommended • Scutchers Cookery demonstrations • Scutchers Wine Club • Outside catering for all special occasions • Scutchers market For more information or quotations, please contact Nick Barrett on 01787 310 200 or firstname.lastname@example.org If you are not already on their mailing list and would like to be kept informed of their latest news and promotions, you can apply on-line at www.scutchers.com or by calling the Barretts during normal office hours.

Practical Magic in the Garden KATE LEITH & LISA FIN C H
In the last edition we talked about garden design in general, this time we examine a current project to give readers an insight into the design process.
Church Cottage has a traditional hedged cottage garden, set within three acres of grassland. Our brief was to design and plant a long border for the existing garden and develop the surrounding field to provide a wildflower meadow, specimen trees, a summer house and a formal garden. Our client wanted the garden to be in keeping with its rural location, but with a sophisticated, playful surprise somewhere.
Garden designers have to be practical as well as creative, since projects invariably present constraints. One factor in this case was that familiar feature of the local countryside: overhead telephone cables, which crossed a corner of the field. These meant the only suitable spot for the formal garden was a trapezium-shaped area not suitable for a traditional oblong or square parterre. From this spot we could see the beautiful rose window of the church we had earlier stopped to admire and after which the cottage is named, and so the concept of a circular parterre echoing the design of the window was born. We knew our client was keen to be bold and adventurous – just the sort of client we like! – so we proposed a dramatic serpentine outer Yew hedge enclosing a parterre of Box and intersected by brick paths with gravel surrounds. The Box shapes could be planted with roses or herbaceous perennials if desired.
Having established our concept, we proposed two further circular areas of the same 18m diameter, to create a sense of coherence in the garden overall. These key areas would be linked by a meandering grassy path which our client would enjoy cutting on his rideon mower into the longer meadow grass, reducing maintenance time and retaining a natural look in the garden as a whole. The mown path would surround a circular wildflower meadow and then continue around the grounds to encircle the parterre. From where it would continue to an area behind the house where it would take a spiral route beneath a group of native specimen trees and finally lead to a bespoke summer house.
...we proposed a dramatic serpentine outer Yew hedge enclosing a parterre of Box and intersected by brick paths with gravel surrounds.
Our client loved the design, so the next step was to provide potential contractors with detailed construction drawings for the parterre so that we would receive unambiguous quotations for the ground works. The accurate setting out of the parterre was crucial, so this was carefully drawn. With quotations in, a contractor was chosen and work got under way in January 2012. The turf was scraped off and the ground thoroughly prepared for the Yew, which makes a fantastic, low maintenance, longlived hedge but must have adequate drainage. With the outer hedge in place, work on the paths could begin, our client having selected handmade, rustic paving bricks. The Box was then planted and gravel laid. Our client is delighted with his new formal garden. The Yew hedge will only grow about 30cm a year so will take time to reach shoulder height but we think it will be worth the wait. The transformation of this garden into a magical space for our client and his family continues as a neglected pond is brought back to life, the summer house is built and specimen trees are planted in the autumn. In the next edition we shall talk about another interesting project... BUSINESS PROFILE OVER 27 YEARS OF FLOOR RESTORATION BY TEXTURCARE The term Floor Restoration offers a broad range of possibilities, and given the current trend for specialisation, you may wonder how we can offer such a wide ranging service.
Restoring old floors which have become tired, damaged, or discovering and revitalising floors that were covered with screed, paint or years of grime and seal is a challenge that interests and absorbs our team. The key to the restoration of any floor is identification, knowledge, and a sympathetic attitude to the floor and its eventual use. We listen to our customers, discuss the possible finishes that might be achieved, and provide guidance when required. Some companies may give you what you ask for, but Texturcare will offer you what you need. Then using a combination of traditional techniques, along side new innovation and environmentally friendly processes, we complete the restoration process. In the modern world we live in, maintenance must be easy, so the processes we use will take this into account.
Over 27 years of floor restoration
We have just restored the floor in the Field Studies Centre at Willy Lott’s House in Flatford, gently removing the grime that has built up over many years, to reveal a beautiful brick floor beneath the dirt. The triumph of the process was the date that was revealed by the fireplacethis provoked some excitement by giving a clear date for the building. The floors we can restore range from marble and stone through to concrete and terrazzo. We also work with old wooden floors, quarries and pamments. The basic principles of sympathetic restoration by technicians who care about their work will always be our guide.
