Drones, multicopters in particular, are gaining popularity in various areas of application constantly. Above all there are multicopters with integrated cameras, which are used by and for athletes to create footage from totally new perspectives. Professional windsurfers were filmed mostly from helicopters, which is expensive and hazardous. Multicopters are gaining popularity in this niche steadily. Currently, there is someone needed who steers the multicopter and films the athlete. Here, autonomity is still in it’s infancy. FL CN is a concept which makes it possible for kite- and windsurfing athletes to carry a multicopter, launch it, have it fly autonomously and even steer it through voice control if wanted. That way, athletes are in total control over an autonomous system. They do not need another person or a specific homespot. The system, which is made for usage on water, isn’t designed only for individual athletes. It is equally designed for kite- and windsurf schools. Teachers can use it as teaching assistant, which keeps watch on apprentices and their actions. Furthermore, the created footage allows detailed debriefings, therefore faster learning success of the students and higher success rates of the schools.

The rubberized handle allows athletes to grab and throw the device. It features and extra grippy pattern on its sides.

When the quadrocopter lands on the water the floaters make sure it will not sink. The semi-hard volumes also cushion the propellers. The reddish color makes it easier to spot the floating device.

All the white graphics are reflective for easy spotting on the water and in the air.

The handle on the top of the quadrocopter is represented through it’s negative form at the quadrocopter’s bottom. This formal decision accents room for the main camera as well as the bottom cameras and the sonic sensors. Furthermore it helps keeping the overall height as low as possible.

The battery has a glossier finish than the handle to emphasize its unique shape and functionality.

In addition to the front sensors and the ultra sonic sensors the bottom cameras are part of the obstacle avoidance system.

The main camera allows footage up to 4K. It is mounted on a 3-axis gimal for maximum stability. The glass around the camera has a matte finish to avoid unwanted reflections.

FLAP

GPS sensor

A Flap locks the battery in place. It also provides room to easily remove the battery. The flap opens with pressing it down. A spring unlocks the flap which then can be opened.

The GPS sensor is seperated from the other sensors to ensure its proper functionality. It is strategically positioned on top of the device.

POSITIONING

The mounting of FL CN serves as reference and location point for the quadrocopter. It has an integrated display which gives detailed information about the system’s status. Other useful information like weather conditions can be displayed as well. The mounting is fixed with a neoprene strap around the athlete’s thigh. 01-OVERVIEW

THROAT MICROPHONE

For communication between athlete and quadrocopter, FL CN uses a throat microphone. It is fixed with a neoprene strap around the athlete’s neck. The shape of the throat microphone is inspired by the quadrocopters circular shape. Brushed aluminium on the front gives it a high-grade finish. 01-OVERVIEW

The ribbon allows precise positioning of the throat mic. It consists of rubber coated wires. This makes it flexible yet stiff enough to fix the throat mic on athlete’s necks. flexible ribbon

The tag serves as loop. Athletes can thread the strap from their wetsuit through this hole and secure the mic against loosing it after a crash.

The lights on top of FL CN serve as battery life indication. Also, when FL CN floats, the lightning signal changes to red and starts pulsating. Therefore it is easy for other athletes and boats to notice the floating device.

The Next Digital Natives‘ target group sees technologies not only as a useful tool people surround themselves with, technology is lived and lives. At the same time, the car is no longer simply a means of transport. With the integration of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, it becomes the projection surface of human emotions. BMW I AM focuses on the symbiosis between human and machine. The vehicle interacts with an intuitive haptic interface that underlines the living aspect of the machine. It strengthens the ever-growing relationship between user and machine and thus creates the necessary trust and acceptance to the fully autonomous movement. feels like family, acts like a friend
