Eleuthera Visitors’ Guide

to Eleuthera A

lthough the Bahamas is a chain of 700 islands in the sun, each one exhibits its own distinct personality. Eleuthera is no exception. Eleuthera, this noble island known as “The Land of Freedom,” offers a life of simplicity…..no stress, no strain, no struggle…no problem! Kind and hospitable Eleutherians are a synthesis of various peoples and cultural dialects resulting from a unique blend of American, European, and Caribbean essence. We are outgoing, friendly, and very warm and inviting to our guests. Even the land itself calls visits to relax, release, and be rejuvenated. Here, pink and white powder beaches stretch along our shores, waiting to be enjoyed. Balmy breezes blow gently and the wind seems to whisper each listener’s name. For the blessed visitors reaching the Eleuthera mainland, Harbour Island or Spanish Wells, the natural landscape and the natural charm of our people will not disappoint. And at the end of your stay, you will know that you are always welcome in this land of beauty and leisure.

I

t began in 2006 with the simple idea of getting family and friends together in Eleuthera to ride their bikes and raise money for cancer. It has grown into the country’s most successful charitable event, raising more than $930,000 in 4 short years for cancer care, treatment, and research. “It seems trite to say it now,” said Susan Larson, who along with her brother Stephen Holowesko co‐founded the Ride for Hope, “but we didn’t really know if we would pull it off.” Susan is referring to the early planning meetings held in 2005 for the first event. “We eventually decided that if only 25 people showed up we would consider that a decent start and grow from there.” The inaugural event had 101 participants. Last year, event organizers, closed registration when the number of riders topped 400. Susan and Stephen make no bones about what is behind the success of the Ride for Hope inspiration. In early 2009, when presenting the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative with a $150,000 check,

18

Eleuthera Visitors’ Guide

Stephen explained, “We have grown to understand more deeply that our participants are not just inspired by our event; they are themselves inspirational. A growing number of them are cancer survivors. Many have lost loved ones to cancer. They carry photos, mementos, or private memories with them as they journey along the roads of Eleuthera. Bonds are formed very quickly between our riders. Many who planned to ride 20 miles are inspired in unexpected ways along the route and successfully complete 50 miles instead.” Inspiration has played a huge role in the Ride for Hope becoming what it is today. Participants themselves have called the Ride for Hope “a truly inspiring weekend.” It is not uncommon to see cyclists cross the finish line with tears of joy

On March 20, 2010 the Ride for Hope will return to Eleuthera to celebrate its 5th Anniversary and once again raise funds and awareness for its compelling cause. streaming down their faces and the most eloquent participants struggling to find words to describe their experience. The success of the Ride for Hope is fueling important cancer initiatives in our country. This past year a special emphasis has been on breast cancer. Sadly, clinical studies have revealed alarming statistics in The Bahamas: 48% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are under the age of 50. Forty four percent present with Stage 3 or Stage 4 of the disease, making their chance of recovery low. Among the women who die, forty three percent are under 50 years old at the time of their death. Together with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Ride for Hope Bahamas has substantially underwritten the work of the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative (BBCI) ‐ an exciting, multi‐player program under‐taking promising research into the mutations of the BRCA1 gene unique to The Bahamas. Hopefully the research will be the first step in overcoming the terrible legacy of aggressive and deadly breast cancer in Bahamian women.

Ride for Hope retired the debt of the Cancer Caring Center in Nassau, a very special facility worth visiting ‐ where Family Island cancer patients can stay in a supportive and nurturing environment during treatment regimes in Nassau. In Eleuthera, the completion of the Cancer Society’s

headquarters and clinic in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera was made possible by the Ride for Hope. From this facility, important public out‐reach and screening initiatives, including mammograms for women and prostate exams for men, are conducted to the great benefit of all communities on Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, and Harbour Island. Ride for Hope is also funding the Family Island Mammogram Screening Project which is first targeting high‐incident communities in Eleuthera, Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. It will move to other Family Islands from there. Early screening is a proven method in early diagnosis which leads to dramatically higher survival rates after treatment. Ride for Hope is especially proud of its fund raising record: every dollar participants raise goes to the cause. This extraordinary accomplishment is made possible by very generous corporate sponsors who underwrite the entire cost of staging the event. If you are looking for a great cause and meaningful way to do something positive for our community, participate as a rider, a volunteer, or even a supportive spectator in the 2010 Ride for Hope! Collectively, 800 cyclists, supported by an entire corps of volunteers, countless family members and friends, and a growing number of very special corporate citizens, have ridden over 24,400 miles along the roads of Eleuthera and raised more than $930,000 to fight cancer. General Procedure The International Persons Landholding Act passed in 1993 made it easier for nonBahamians and companies under their control to own property. 1. A non-Bahamian or permanent resident who purchases or acquires an interest in a condominium or property to be used by him as a single family dwelling or for construction of such dwelling must apply to the secretary to the Investment Board to register the purchase. Application for Registration Form I must be filed with the Ministry of Financial Service & Investments, along with proof of ownership and payment of stamp duty and real property tax, and bankers draft/ postal money order for $25.00 made payable to the Public Treasury. 2. Upon receipt of the above the acquisition is registered and a certificate of registration issued. 3. A permit to acquire property is required if the property is undeveloped land and the purchaser would become the owner of five or more contiguous acres. A permit is also required if the non-Bahamian intends to acquire land or an interest therein by way of freehold or leasehold, when the acquisition is not in accordance with (1). 4. Non-Bahamians who own homes in The Bahamas may apply to the director of immigration for an annual home owner’s residence card. This entitles the owner, spouse and dependent children to enter and remain in The Bahamas for the duration of the validity of the card. This is intended to facilitate entry but does not confer resident status. All applications for permits along with fees made payable to the Public Treasury should be submitted to the Ministry of Financial Services & Investments for consideration by the Investment Board.
