June Labour Day Holiday Cat Island Rake & Scrape Festival

This annual event is held during the Labour Day holiday weekend. It is believed that Rake and Scrape is descended from the Rip Saw music of the Turks and Caicos Islands which was introduced to the Southern Bahamas when large numbers of Turks Islanders migrated during the early 20th century. This fun-filled weekend lends to total immersion into Bahamian culture. On Thursday experience Gospel Night with the Rahming Brothers, Rev. Carol Johnson, the Cat Island Rushers, St. John’s Church choir and others; Friday and Saturday nights enjoy native artists including Chippy, Ronnie Butler, Ancient Man, Spank Band and Lassie Doe Boys. Along with great native music, enjoy tasty dishes such as conch salad, fried fish and guava duff along with a cold Kalik or Sky Juice or any combination a cold or hot tea from the „Bush Tea‰ Bar. Now if you are looking for some good healthy competition check out the Plaiting, Flour Cake, Bark Barking, Conch Cracking or Crab Catching Contests or maybe you want to see how low you can go with a bit of Limbo.

ACTIVITIES JUST RELAX Peace and relaxation are the key words of vacationing on Cat Island, the sixth largest island in the Bahamas. Since it is much smaller in population than many of the other islands, you won’t be in the crowd and thus able to enjoy its natural beauty more. Chances are you’ll have a better understanding of their local customs and way of life than on many other islands. You don’t feel like a tourist but rather an explorer on Cat Island. Do consider to include Cat Island in your next Bahamas vacation.

ATTRACTIONS St. Andrews Anglican/ Espiscopal Church (AT) Fresh Water Blue Hole Fantastic Mangroves Mail Boat Landing The Caves at Industrious Hill The Media Center

Located in Port Howe, was once yje scene of splendor and luxury. Today it lies in ruins. This was the home of Colonel Andrew Deveaux, who settled with his family and the slaves on Cat Island in the 18th Century. It is worth seeing to experience the local history and the spectacular setting.

Holy Redeemer Catholic Church by Father Jerome The main attraction in town gleams white beside the main road and looks like it belongs on Mediterrenean shores. The church was built by Father Jerome who also blessed Cat Island with its most famous landmark, the pint-size Mt. Alvernia Hermitage.

The Hermitage Mount Alvernia is the ighest elevation in the country at 206 feet above sea level. The hill served as the hermitage of Father Jerome Hawes, who settled on the island in 1939, where he built a miniature monastery and hand-carved steps out of solid rock. Named after the pirate Arthur Catt, much of the island has not been developed, which provides a unique vacation for those who want to get away in a private, relaxing, laid-back environment. Of course, the pink beaches are popular, but so are the world-class diving adventures, snorkeling and fishing. With 50 miles of rolling hills and miles of nature trails, you truly can experience a Bahamas island in its native setting. This is not fabricated. This is The Bahamas. And on Cat Island, even the winters are a blazing 60 degrees, while in the summertime, temperatures linger around the mid-80s with a gentle breeze from the ocean. o one knows exactly where the term rake n scrape came from or on which island the music originated - some say Cat Island or Abaco. But the one thing we know for sure is that it was passed down from African slaves mimicking the sounds of their homeland using a washboard, scraping sticks and carpenter’s saw, as well as more conventional instruments like the goombay drum and concertina. In the early days it was known simply as African music, and over time was used to accompany such dances as the Bahamian Quadrille and the Hell and Toe Polka dances. These days musicians such as Chippie & The Boys and Ed Moxey and the famous Lassie Doh and the Boys keep the music alive, along with countless rake n scrape bands throughout the Family Islands, where it is still popular to this day.

TO CAT ISLAND A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF TOURISM & AVIATION

W

elcome to Cat Island, a land with matchless mystique and allure among the 700 islands of the Bahamas. Cat Island is known as an oasis of culture.  Its settlements are rich with storytellers, dancers, and musicians who have a passion for our special rhythms and rhymes.  It is common to hear the distinct sounds of rake ‘n scrape drift in from the hills, a local watering spot or backyard gathering as Cat Islanders enjoy leisurely evenings together. This island is also a bastion of Bahamian cuisine.  Here, you will be treated to delicacies freshly collected from the land and sea, and prepared the Cat Island way.  You would be delighted to discover the unforgettable tastes of flour cake, cassava bread, potato bread, stewed fish, fever grass tea and more. Cat Island is home to our highest elevation, Mt. Alvernia, which is also known as Como Hill.  Atop Como Hill, sits a remarkable work of architecture called The Hermitage, and the only thing more breathtaking than the architecture is the magnificent view from the hill. The roads of Cat Island are lined with historic places of interest, including the ruins of plantation-era buildings.  Just as satisfying, are the many miles of lovely pink and white sand beaches to which those roads also lead. The sights and sounds of mystical Cat Island are sure to please, and a special place will always be reserved for you on this island of music and myth. Sincerely,

Sen. Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, C.B.E. Minister of Tourism and Aviation
