Andros Visitors’ Guide

Message from The Minister of Tourism & Aviation

Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, MP

TO ANDROS

Andros Island, the largest of our 26 inhabited Bahamian islands, beckons the adventurous at heart to explore its 2,300 square miles of diverse landscape and underwater wonderland. Those who love the great outdoors will find themselves perfectly at home on the island we affectionately call “The Big Yard,” a place where time slows its pace to allow you to immerse yourself in pursuits against the backdrop of Nature, on land and sea. The geological make up of Andros sets it apart from any other place in the world. It is an archipelago within an archipelago-nation. It is dissected by hundreds of creeks and waterways surrounded by hundreds of square miles of fishable flats that have earned Andros the reputation of “Bonefishing Capital of the World”. In land there are numerous blue holes surrounded by thousands of acres of virgin forests that are teeming with exotic flora, fauna and wild life. Here the visitor will find hundreds of species of birds such as the West Indian Woodpecker, the Bahama Mocking Bird and the Red-legged Thrush. Home of the famous land crabs, the annual harvest season culminates with a grand Crab Festival that lures hundreds of visitors to the shores of Andros every year. For the scuba diver enthusiast interested in seeing the last of the pristine tropical Atlantic reef, Andros is known for its spectacular untouched eco-systems and breathtaking wall dives into the Tongue of the Ocean, site of the world’s third largest barrier reef. The rich cultural heritage of the island’s people is witnessed in the authentic cuisine, storytelling tradition, the intricate form of basket weaving peculiar to the village of Red Bays and the warm hospitality of Androsians throughout the Island. Opportunities abound for the visitor to experience a rich cultural exchange. Whether it is bone fishing, diving, bird watching or an eco-adventure tour, you are bound to find an activity that suits your taste. I therefore, join all Androsians in welcoming you to explore all of the magnificent wonders that Andros has to offer. Warm Regards,

Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, MP Minister of Tourism & Aviation

about ANDROS

A

ndros is the largest island in the Bahamian Archipelago and the fifth largest land mass in the Caribbean. The island is 104 miles long by 40 miles at its widest point. The population of Andros is around 8,000 descendents of freed African Slaves, Seminole Indians and the mythical Chickcharnie, a green imp said to live in the interior pine forests. Andros is divided by geography and four administrative districts. The administrative centre of North Andros is Nicholl’s Town. Settlements in this district are: BARC, Conch Sound, Lowe Sound, Mastic Point, Morgan’s Bluff, Red Bays, San Andros and Stafford Creek. Fresh Creek is the administrative centre for Central Andros, and settlements within this district are: Blanket Sound, Staniard Creek, Love Hill, Small Hope Bay, Calabash Bay, Andros Town, Bowen Sound, Man-O-War Sound, Cargill Creek, Behring Point. Mangrove Cay is often described as an island within an island. Moxey Town is the administrative centre here and the surroundingsettlements are: Little Harbour, Burnt Rock, Pinder’s, Swain’s, Grant’s, Victoria Point and Lisbon Creek. Kemp’s Bay is the administrative centre for the most southern district of Andros. Settlements in this area include: Drigg’s Hill, Congo Town, High Rock, The Bluff, Long Bay Cays, Smith’s Hill, Deep Creek, Little Creek and Mars Bay. Travel to one of the four airports on Andros is

quick and easy. Scheduled airlines and charter fl ights from Nassau and South Florida call on offi cial ports of entry at San Andros (North), Andros Town, (Central) and Congo Town (South) daily. However, the airport at Mangrove Cay does not have customs and immigration clearance facility. Transportation via sea aboard Bahamas Ferries to Morgan’s Bluff, North Andros and Fresh Creek, Central Andros is a convenient, economical and popular means of travel. Androsians are steeped in Afro-centric traditions with lifestyles that are tied to the land and sea. Activities such as singing, dancing, story telling, basket weaving and boat building are features which characterize the order of the day, in addition to a seasonal religious ritual, called “Rushin”. Other popular events on the island include sloop sailing/regattas, fish fry, homecomings, crabbing and theme festivals. Visitors can stay at a range of accommodation facilities from exclusive private island resorts, ocean-view dive specialty lodges, creek-side fl y-fi shing cottages to family-oriented guest houses

Andros National Parks:

Protecting Unique Bahamian Biodiversity

T

he largest and least populated of the Bahamian islands, Andros Island is a place of vast, uninhabited expanses and mystery. Located just off the tip of Florida, the island is 100 miles long and 45 miles wide. Andros is an interwoven mix of creeks, mangrove flats and pine forests. The island features the second largest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere, the Northern Bahamian rock iguana, and an astounding underground maze of underwater caverns and tunnels connecting land and sea. Andros has a diverse history. It has the old community churches of Cargill Creek and Behring Point with yards of mixed native plants and fruit trees; the logging industry in the Pine Yards of Central Andros; the San Andros farmlands of the Mennonites of Pennsylvania; the North Andros caves and rocky cliffs that were the business hub of the notorious Captain Morgan; the settlement of the Black Seminoles on the west coast of Andros; the spongers of Mangrove Cay; and the slave plantations of Deep Creek. These are all a part of the culture, legends and natural history of The Bahamas. The forests and roadsides are home to many medicinal plants that have

been used as bush teas and medicines for generations. The bird life of Andros is the basis of Bahamian folklore and myths. Stories of the Chickcharney (owl), Gaulins (night herons) and Pitty-muh-dick (Antillean nighthawk) are artfully woven into the fabric of Bahamian life. The island is home to four Bahamian endemic birds: Bahama Swallow, Bahama Yellowthroat, Bahama Woodstar and the critically endangered Bahama Oriole. The resident specialty birds include the Greater Antillean Bullfinch, Cuban Peewee, Cuban Emerald Hummingbird, Great Lizard Cuckoo (a species found on only two islands in the Bahamas), Key West Quail Dove, Hairy Woodpecker, Black-faced Grassquit and Western Spindalis. Andros is a flyway for migrant Brown Pelicans, Reddish Egrets, Gray Kingbird, Herons, Warblers, Flycatchers and Swallows. Due to the number of bird species that can be seen on Andros, the BNT, National Audubon and the IDB worked together to train Androsians as expert birding guides. For more information about these Bahamian Birding Experts go to bahamago.com and click on tours for their profiles.

Protecting Parks for Everyone The Bahamas National Trust working with the Government of The Bahamas, scientists, local government officials, resort owners, bonefishing guides, local communities and local and international conservation NGO’s has established protected areas on Andros that conserve biodiversity and natural and historic resources in support of sustainable development. In 2002, five National Parks were declared on Andros. In 2012, the Andros West Side National Park was expanded to over 1.3 million acres making it one of the largest protected areas in the Western Atlantic Caribbean Region. 2015 saw the addition of the Joulter Cays National Park to the protected area system on Andros. Andros is known for having the largest concentration of inland blue holes in the world with over 200 of them protected in the Blue Holes National Park; an extensive fringing reef a portion of which is protected in the North and South Marine Parks; extensive flats, wetlands, mangroves and creeks are protected in the the pristine Westside National Park and the beautiful Joulter Cays National Park protects essential wintering habitat for shorebirds including the endangered Piping Plover. The Crab Replenishment Reserve provides essential habitat for the largest population of giant land crabs in The Bahamas. The Andros National Parks are all special and unique protecting a safe haven for fish, birds, reptiles, and tidal creeks

and flats that are key to Andros Island’s multi-million-dollar bonefish industry, attracting sports-fishermen from around the world. Blue Holes National Park Established: 2002 Size: 40,000 Acres Andros has the highest concentration of Blue Hole in the world. Exposed to the elements over thousands of years, the island’s limestone bedrock eroded creating this vast expanse of underwater cave systems. These caves have been found to house many unusual and unique cave fish and invertebrates, some not found anywhere else in the world. This park protects a large quantity of blue holes, surrounding rich coppice and pristine pineland forests and part of Andros’ extensive fresh-water lens. The popular Capt. Bill’s Blue Hole is located in the southern portion of the Park. Blue Holes National Park provides habitat for Bahamian endemic birds including the Bahama Oriole and Great Lizard Cuckoo. Caribbean endemics birds like the Western Spindalis, Red-Legged Thrush, Black-faced Grassquit and Cuban Emerald are commonly seen in the rocky pinelands of the Park.

Andros West Side National Park Established 2002: Expanded 2012 Size: 1.3 million acres This park encompasses a vast area of coastal mangrove habitat that is an important nursery area for conch, lobster and fish. It is also a prime bonefishing area and is utilized by the endangered Andros Rock Iguana and many bird species, including the West Indian Flamingo. The Andros West Side National Park is an absolutely incredible maze of channels and cuts running through untouched beaches and mangroves. The Andros West Side National Park is rich in flora and fauna. The Caribbean pine occupies the pineland areas of the park, providing critical habitat for endemic species including the Atala hairstreak butterfly The mangrove forest of the Andros West Side National Park consists of red mangrove, white mangroves, black mangroves and buttonwood. The endangered Andros rock iguana (Cyclura cychlura cychlura) is endemic to Andros Island, inhabiting the pine woodlands and palm shrublands within the Park. A resident non-breeding flock of 100 – 1,000 west Indian flamingos occupy the lake systems within the Andros West Side National Park. The endangered hawksbill and green turtles forage and nest throughout the Park, while loggerhead turtles are found in the northern sections of the Park. Bonefish) and Tarpon are of economic importance to the Bahamas, with healthy populations found within the Park. Healthy populations of nurse sharks, bull sharks and the critically endangered small tooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) are also found within Park boundaries.

to ensure a sustainable crab population for future generations.

North and South Marine Parks Established: 2002 Size: 8, 500 acres Andros has the third longest barrier reef in the world. These two parks were established to help preserve significant parts of this valuable reef ecosystem. The parks consist of beautiful dive and snorkel sites: Coral Castle, Dave’s Patch Reef, and the Amphitheatre in the North Marine Park. Crab Replenishment Reserve Established: 2002 Size: 4,000 acres Identified as the best land crab habitat in central Andros, this area was set aside

Joulter Cays National Park Established: 2015 Size: 79, 500 acres The Joulter Cays, located just north of Andros Island, are well known by research biologists and fishermen. The area is prominent for its unique geological features, abundant fisheries, diverse and abundant birdlife, expansive flats and tidal creeks, mangrove wetlands, and rich coral reefs. Key features for which the area is known include: Impressive bonefish populations that contribute to a sustainable recreational fly-fishing industry in Andros; extensive banks of unique oolitic sand; sand flats that provide habitat for thousands of shorebirds including the largest congregation of the endangered piping plover outside of the United States; and areas of coppice that support significant breeding populations of White-crowned Pigeon.
The BNT has identified Blue Holes National Park and the Andros West Side National Park as priority parks for infrastructure to improve accessibility and enhance the visitor experience. These improvements will include boardwalks, interpretive signage, nature trails, visitors centres and moorings. The Future of National Parks in The Bahamas. Over the next decade the BNT needs to invest an additional $25 million on infrastructure and management for the national parks. Financial support from the public and private sectors is critical to implement these plans and protect our natural resources. And there will be many opportunities to explore public-private partnerships to develop facilities and promote public use of our national parks.

Investment Guidelines The International Persons Landholding Act passed in 1993 made it easier for non-Bahamians and companies under their control to own property. 1. A non-Bahamian or permanent resident who purchases or acquires an interest in a condominium or property to be used by him as a single family dwelling or for construction of such dwelling must apply to the secretary to the Investment Board to register the purchase following completion of the purchase. 2. Upon receipt of the above the acquisition is registered and a certificate of registration issued. 3. A permit to acquire property is required as a pre-condition to completion of the purchase if the property is undeveloped land and the purchaser would become the owner of two or more contiguous acres. A permit is also required in cases where property being purchased is not for use as a single family dwelling (for example if the purchaser is buying a resort, restaurant or other commercial venture). 4. Non-Bahamians who own homes in The Bahamas may apply to the director of immigration for an annual home owner’s residence card. This entitles the owner, spouse and dependent children to enter and remain in The Bahamas for the duration of the validity of the card. This is intended to facilitate entry but does not confer resident status. All applications for permits along with fees made payable to the Public Treasury should be submitted to the Ministry of Financial Services & Investments for consideration by the Investment Board.

NATURE & ECO-TOURS reefs, and the 6,000 feet deep tongue of the ocean. These treasures contribute to the branding of the island as a designated “sustainable tourism” destination. On-island guests can take eco-tours and nature walks through evergreen coppices and pristine pine forests to inland blue holes and caves. Participants in these activities will hear and see a wide array of song birds, exotic insects, land crabs, wild boars and reptiles including iguaNAS. OPportunities also exist for the more adventurous visitor to kayak into inland lakes or mangrove laced creeks. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy some of the world’s best fl y fi shing experiences for bonefi sh, permit and tarpon on Andros with coaching from professionally trained and certifi ed guides. This island has the most expansive area of mangroves and saltwater flats in the world, and the highest concentration of specialty fishing lodges in The Bahamas. Pelagic species such as tuna, dolphin, wahoo and marlin are also caught in the Tongue of The Ocean. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling are specialties of Andros; the island has the world’s third longest barrier reef. Here novice and experienced underwater lovers can enjoy a range of activities from snorkeling around shallow coral heads and wrecks to exploring the outer limits of the barrier reef, diving off the wall and into the oceanic blue holes. Andros can best be seen through the familiar eyes of a courteous taxi cab driver, or by renting a car for self exploration. Visitors to Andros have found social interaction with residents at local gathering places from roadside eateries to church services to be a treat. Most restaurants offer a combination of Bahamian and American cuisine and the dress code is casual.

A nature trail explores the island flora and fauna, blue holes and medicinal plants. Guided nature walks are offered by Small Hope Bay Lodge, several Mangrove Cay hotels and in South Andros through the Tourist Office. Small Hope Bay Lodge (SHB).............368-2014 or Toll Free: 1-800-223-6991
