Der Wiedehopf Der Wiedehopf (Upupa epops) ist unverkennbar: Charakteristisch sind die kontrastreich schwarz-weiß gebänderten Flügel, der lange, gebogene Schnabel und die aufrichtbare Federhaube. Der Körper ist rostbraunrot. Auch der Gesang des Männchens, der aus meistens drei dumpfen Elementen auf ‚u’ (auch ‚up’ oder ‚pu’) besteht, ist unverkennbar. Dieser Ruf hat zum wissenschaftlichen Gattungsnamen geführt. Die Nominatform ist fast in ihrem gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet ein Zugvogel, ihre Hauptüberwinterungsgebiete liegen im Savannengürtel südlich der Sahara. Kleine vor allem südwesteuropäische Populationen (Südspanien, Balearen sowie Sizilien) überwintern im Brutgebiet.
Hoopoe The hoopoe (Upupa epops) is unmistakable: striking black-and-white barring on its wings, a long curved bill, a pinkishbrown body and a crest of feathers which fan out when raised. The song of the male is also highly distinctive, usually comprising three muffled “oo” sounds (also heard as an “oop-oop-oop”, hence the name - “hoopoe”). It is migratory throughout most of its range, its principal wintering grounds lying in the Savannah belt south of the Sahara. Small, mainly south-west European populations (southern Spain, the Balearics and Sicily) spend the winter in their breeding grounds.
