“Powered Up Celebrating Education Advances in Arkansas

As surely as the sun will rise in the eastern sky, the hopes and dreams of students rise in the EAST Initiative.

ARKANSAS’ EDUCATION CELEBRATION

The 2012 edition of the International Science and Technology Educators’ Conference in San Diego, California highlighted five education models of excellence for more than 20,000 educators from around the world. One of them was Arkansas’ own - the EAST Initiative. For more than 15 years, the EAST Initiative has guided Arkansas students towards finding and pursuing their passions in high-tech careers, poised for success in the future. There are a number of outstanding educational programs that successfully integrate cutting edge, high-end technology into curriculum. But EAST is the only model that delivers that knowledge while simultaneously uplifting their communities. Project-based learning is based upon presenting students with a problem to solve and allowing them to use their creativity and technology to craft a unique solution to the problem. Typically, all students in the class will tackle the same problem with diverse variations for possible solutions. EAST only asks students to go into their communities and find real world problems that matter to them, and to use technology in crafting their solutions to them. This highly successful approach prepares students with the technical knowledge required in the 21st century workforce, as well as soft skills, like leadership, collaboration and project management The integration of community service into EAST’s formula for success results in their greater connection to their communities and belief in their own ability to contribute to the solution of problems about which they feel passionate. The sum of their efforts is conservatively estimated to net $15 million in economic impact to the state annually. EAST students have provided their communities with texting-and-driving simulators for police officers, critical hydrant location maps for fire departments, websites, virtual tours, podcasts and videos for a myriad of non-profit businesses around the state. “Powered Up” is an uplifting program about inspirational Arkansas kids making a difference in our state while acquiring skills and traits that will ensure their ability to successfully compete in the global marketplace.
