Himos Safaris #HimosJämsä
“Himos is Finland’s fifth largest skiing centre and there is space here for more entrepreneurs. The further development of the area is, in the end, good for everyone”, says Elsi Ojala.
Management of Himos passes to the next generation
Himos is the main attraction for tourism in the Jämsä region, and it offers great holiday options for all ages. Last autumn, Himos-Yhtiöt took another important step forward when Juhani Ojala’s daughter, Elsi Ojala, took up the position of company CEO. Himos is a place she knows through and through, right from her childhood and youth, when there was plenty of work to be done in places such as the restaurant, equipment rental store and skiing school. Her work and career then took her elsewhere, but a few years ago she returned to the family business in the role of Chief Business Officer. Now she is steering the whole company. “The call to return had been there for years already. Jämsä is in my blood, it gradually drew me back, and in the end I decided to take hold of the opportunity”, Ojala says with a smile.
Keeping it in the family
The Himos skiing business is still firmly in the hands of the Ojala family. The business founders Juhani Ojala and Päivi Kuokkanen are still active on the company board, and in other areas too. Elsi’s brother Jouni Ojala is responsible for running the ski slopes, and when needed also acts as substitute CEO. Likewise, Juhani and Päivi’s college-age son Joona it is also involved in the company’s activities. Himos-Yhtiöt provides permanent employment for 17 people. Seasonal employment is provided for around
120 more. Annual turnover ranges from four to six million euros. “This place is its own small world, as envisioned by my father, in which the ups and downs of family entrepreneurship have become familiar over the years”, the CEO recalls.
Out skiing by spring at the latest
At Himos, the busy skiing season lasts around half a year, and preparations for the new season begin already in August. During the busiest holiday weeks, the challenge is the limited accommodation capacity in the area. Ojala also thinks that there should be more extra services as well. “Himos is Finland’s fifth largest skiing centre and there is space here for more entrepreneurs. The further development of the area is, in the end, good for everyone”
And does the CEO herself, with all the busyness of work, ever make it onto the slopes?
“A few times at weekends, definitely, and in spring at the latest.”
The Himos ski slopes are well suited for both beginners and experienced skiers.
Ski slopes to suit everyone
Visitors to the Himos ski slopes are served by the largest and most diverse ski centre in all of South and Central Finland. The ski season generally starts at the end of November or beginning of December and continues all the way until May Day.
Freestyling Skiing and snowboarding fans can find much to enjoy during the winter season amongst Himos’s 23 ski slopes and three Snow Parks. With ski instructors providing high-quality tuition, even beginners can get to experience the joy of downhill skiing. For more experienced skiers, the slopes offer a variety of challenging boxes, presses and rails. Families with children, meanwhile, can enjoy the free practice slopes and huge sledging hill.

Wanha Witonen paddling route
Did you know?
The Wanha Witonen (Old Fiver) canoeing route gets its name from the five-mark banknote which was introduced in 1909. National artist Eliel Saarinen immortalised the Rasuanniemi lakeside landscape, which is located along the canoeing route, in a picture which was used on the banknote.
For a day trip, you can select appropriate short sections of the route. Koskenpää
Canoeing along Wanha Witonen The Wanha Witonen canoeing route extends from Petäjävesi
through Koskenpää, Jämsänkoski and the centre of Jämsä all the way to Päijänne. The total route covers 75 km, but there are shorter sections which are suitable for day trips. Along the marked route there are small rapids and chutes as well as lakes and river sections. You can also go round the rapids by land, making the route suitable for all skill levels. The route ends at Päijänne, at which point experienced canoeists can continue onwards as far as Arvaja or Himos. Make the most of the services on offer along the route. On the banks and shores of Wanha Witonen can be found resting spots, tourist sites, accommodation options and restaurants. The sites on offer include Petäjävesi Church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Aarresaari and Pälämäki Local Museums and the Rasuanniemi Nature Reserve. Kievari Rantapirtti and Eräopas Talvi (trekking guide service) offer canoeing trips, equipment and transport for canoeists. Further information about the services and more precise details of the route are shown in a waterproof route map which is on sale at the City of Jämsä Tourist Information Centre and elsewhere.
Juveninkoski is a popular location for hiking and photography.
In the depths of the forest Landscapes shaped by the ice age and unique nature reserves await the adventurous. Isojärvi National Park it is an exceptional area for hiking, with over 30 km of marked routes of different lengths. Distributed along the routes there are lean-to shelters and rest areas. In the summer, the Heretyn cabin offers coffee and accommodation. The park also includes over 20 islands which can be explored by canoe or rowing boat. With a nearly 7 metre drop, Juveninkoski is central Finland’s highest waterfall. It can be found next to Partalantie, close to the felting factory.
Other good hiking destinations include The Himos hiking routes, Pukinvuori exercise trail, Linnasenvuori nature trail, Paljakka duckboard trail, Ruuhivuori ravine lake, Vororotti, Synninlukko ravine valley, Kilpavuori trekking route and Liekojärvi nature trail. The Koski-Keskinen outdoor route is accessible for the disabled. Cyclists can enjoy Jämsä’s 75 km long cycle track network, as well as the 85 km Jämsänniemi network which begins at Himos. The Himos and Isojärvi routes are also good for a challenging mountain bike ride.
“Our idea was to offer visitors a relaxing but also energising time with animals in the midst of nature. With us, the busyness and little worries of everyday life get forgotten.”
Nurmolandia offers visitors a fur-tastically fun time
How about a sheep agility circuit? Or perhaps a small nature trek together with some farm animals? Or, instead of an old-fashioned pony ride, a whole day of stroking and hanging out with horses, chickens, sheep and cows? All this and much more is on offer at Home and Animal Service Nurmolandia, just a 10 minute drive from Himos. The domestic animal farm, located on Salovuorentie on the edge of Jämsä, is a place where visitors who are fond of animals and longing for natural tranquillity are always warmly welcome. “With us, there is plenty to do, see and experience for everyone, from babies to grandparents. Here you can feed, stroke and take care of the animals”, says entrepreneur Eva Nurminen. Any new visitor will probably make their first friends straightaway. Two sheep called Prinsessa and Aurora like to introduce themselves as soon as they see any new faces in the farmyard. “If you want, you can also head off with these two for a small walk in the forest. They will politely follow along behind you as long as you have a small snack to offer”, the farm entrepreneur says with a laugh.
Fun for grown-ups too
Since its opening in August 2018, Nurmolandia has been offering fun experiences for adults as well. Grandmothers and grandfathers get to revive their own childhood memories, while the younger generation have the opportunity, for example, to organise country-style stag parties or hen parties. Also available with advanced booking are childcare services either on the farm or even at the holiday cabins. It’s also easy to pop into Nurmolandia while on a holiday trip to somewhere else, as it is located just a short distance from Highway 9. It’s worth, however, booking the time of your visit beforehand by phone or email, so that the hosts know when to be available.
Getting into the swing HimosGolf, Himos’s full-size golf course, is one of Finland's few resort-style golf courses, which offers accommodation and a wide range of activities in addition to golf. There are numerous golfing events and competitions throughout the golfing season. Himos is well suited to both beginners and the more experienced, thanks to its relaxed environment and varied terrain. A membership and green card from any golf club is sufficient to play the course. Golfing equipment is available for rent, and there are also courses on offer for a variety of skill levels. In winter, you can keep on playing thanks to the Himoswing golf simulator.
All different levels of Disc Golf In Jämsä, there are many free disc golf courses available to be used by both active disc golfers and those that are just getting a feel for the sport. With its popularity rapidly growing, this sport is an excellent choice also as part of a day out for families with children. “It doesn’t take long to learn how to throw the discs, and so out on the course the differences in skill levels quickly reduce. Everybody faces some setbacks along the way, so whether playing against work colleagues or with family, it really isn’t decided beforehand who will win”, points out Tero Laaksonen, the chairman of the local Disc Golf Association (JFG). One of the best things about Disc Golf is how easy it is to get started with it. All you need to bring with you is a disc and a get-up-and-go attitude. The courses in Jämsä are park-like, easy to get around, and family friendly. They are located around the edge of the centre of Jämsä, on Puukilankatu and Jannentie (in
Halli), in Myllymäki in Jämsänkoski (next to the Forestry School), and at Kievari Rantapirtti in Koskenpää.
Tips and lessons from weekly competitions
The growing popularity of the sport has been seen in the number of people using the courses and also in the weekly competitions, which are open to all and are an excellent way to get to know the sport. You can join in even if you are picking up a disc for the first time. Holidaymakers are also warmly welcome. “It’s not worth taking much notice of the scores. To begin with, it is enough if the disc just manages to make it a bit further forward”, Laaksonen says with a laugh. Where needed, JFG can also provide instruction on the sport and the basics of disc throwing. And just as with traditional golf, the interest levels really rise once you’ve actually made it for the first time round a real course.
