The rifle was built using the Field’s patent action, no. 1927 of 1887.

The rifle was built for the Duke of Argyll.

The mechanism was patented in 1872, no. 1137. MacNaughton claimed numerous advantages for the Duval-MacNaughton rifle over the popular Martini Henry action that had been selected as the rifle of the British Army. It appears that relatively few rifles on this action were completed and was rapidly superseded by other falling block designs.

Lot 57 HOLLAND & HOLLAND A SCARCE .300 (.295) DOUBLE BARREL HAMMER ROOK RIFLE, NO. 8025, BUILT FOR LORD RIPON 26-inch barrels, bores re-lined, with flat rib and folding leaf sight and engraved “Winners of All The Field, Rifle Trials, London, 1883”, the rounded frame, rebounding backlocks, hammers and top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining traces of original hardening colour, 14 1/2-inch figured stock with pistol grip and cheekpiece, 6lb. 8oz., nitro re-proof The maker confirms that the rifle was built in 1884 for Lord de Grey, the second Lord Ripon. Lord Ripon, Earl de Grey was born in 1852 and became the second Marquis of Ripon in 1909. He is arguably the greatest game shot of all time with a recorded lifetime’s total of 556,813 head of game. Much of his shooting was conducted with a set of three guns and with great speed of loading is known to have had seven dead birds in the air at one time. He persisted in the use of hammer guns. The unprecedented size of his ‘bag’ has led to his frequent description as the greatest shot of all and his feats are unlikely ever to be repeated. At Studley Royal, his Yorkshire estate, he entertained the royalty and nobility of England and Europe and in turn shot with the greatest sporting estates such as Holkham, Sandringham and Elveden in the heydey of the shooting party. It was his combination of natural ability and total commitment to his chosen sport which raised him above the level of other good shots. In the shooting field, throughout his life, he was repeatedly top scorer and despite increasing age he maintained the highest standard to the end. He died on 22 September 1923 in the field, having killed 51 grouse on his last drive. While the last birds of the day were being picked up, he fell down dead. £5000 - 8000

GAVIN GARDINER LIMITED’S AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE If Gavin Gardiner Limited sells an item of Proper ty which is later shown to be a “Counterfeit”, subject to the terms below Gavin Gardiner Limited will rescind the sale and refund the Buyer the total amount paid by the Buyer to Gavin Gardiner Limited for that Property, up to a maximum of the Purchase Price. The Guarantee lasts for one (1) year after the date of the relevant auction, is for the benefit of the Buyer only and is non-transferable. “Counterfeit” means an item of Proper ty that in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion is an imitation created with the intent to deceive over the authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not included in the catalogue description for the Proper ty. Property shall not be considered Counterfeit solely because of any damage and/or restoration and/or modification work (including, but not limited to, recolouring, refinishing or rebarreling). Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:(i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinions of scholars and exper ts at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or

(ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a Counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical; or likely to have caused damage to or loss in value to the Property (in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion); or (iii) there has been no material loss in value of the Property from its value had it accorded with its catalogue description. To claim under this Guarantee, the Buyer must:(i) notify Gavin Gardiner Limited in writing within one (1) month of receiving any information that causes the Buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the Property, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at which it was purchased and the reasons why it is believed to be Counterfeit; and

Gavin Gardiner Limited has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. Gavin Gardiner Limited may require the Buyer to obtain at the Buyer's cost the repor ts of two independent and recognised exper ts in the relevant field and acceptable to Gavin Gardiner Limited. Gavin Gardiner Limited shall not be bound by any repor ts produced by the Buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional exper t advice at its own expense. In the event Gavin Gardiner Limited decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the Buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent exper t repor ts, provided always that the costs of such repor ts have been approved in advance and in writing by Gavin Gardiner Limited.
