950* A Great War Pair to Major H.W. Gush, D.S.O., M.C., Northumberland Fusiliers British War and Victory Medals (Capt. H.W. Gush.), good very fine M.C. London Gazette 26.9.1916. Temp. Capt. Henry Wood Gush, Norh’d Fus., For ‘conspicuous gallantry during operations. Though severely wounded and unable to move about without assistance, he remained with his company under intense shell fire in order to encourage and steady the men by his presence’. D.S.O. London Gazette 24.9.1918 T./Maj. (A.Lt.Col.) Henry Wood Gush, M.C., North’d Fus., ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty’, His battalion was in reserve at the commencement of operations, and was moved up early in the morning to support the line. This line was maintained till evening, when it was practically surrounded; he then withdrew his command with the utmost skill and coolness from a difficult position. Next day he covered the withdrawal of the brigade, maintaining his position for several hours under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. The steadiness of the men and the tenacity with which they held their positions were largely due to the splendid personal example of this officer, and the stand made by his battalion was of the utmost importance.’, Croix de Guerre, London Gazette 9.12.1916 Temporary Captain Henry Wood Gush, Northumberland Fusiliers. Africa from 1914 commissioned, Captain 3.4.1916, with the 12th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, The 12th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers War Diary records on 26.6.1916, a patrol under Lieutenant Philip and 2nd Lieutenant McArthur raided the trench at Wicket Corner, Fricourt, bringing back six prisoners, this raid drew heavy artillery retaliation on allied trenches for about 10 minutes, killing 3 officers, 4 other ranks and wounding Captain H.W. Torrington (Cardiff), on 8.4.1917 the S.S. Torrington was struck by a U-Boat, 34 crew were lost including Johnson, he is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London 10412 Lance-Corporal Albion Hampton Knight, killed in action whilst serving in H.M.S.
