84* Ashford (Colin James, b.1919). Cody Biplane, Military Trials 1912, watercolour on paper, signed lower right, titled verso, 34.5 x 50cm, mount aperture, framed and glazed with Claude Gallery label to verso The Cody V was single-engined biplane which was built by the American aviation pioneer Samuel Franklin Cody in 1912. It was built from the remains of two of Cody’s earlier aircraft and won the 1912 British Military Aeroplane Competition. (1) £100 - £150

Airopaidia: Containing the Narrative of a Balloon Excursion, the Eighth of September, 1785, Taken from Minutes made during the Voyage: Hints on the Improvement of Balloons, and Mode of Inflation by Steam: Means to Prevent their Descent over Water... , the whole serving as an Introduction to Aerial Navigation: With a Copious Index, first edition, Chester: Printed for the Author, by J. Fletcher, 1786, half-title (old ink inscription, closed tear repair to verso not affecting text, crudely rehinged), four partly-folding engraved plates including two handcoloured, the first plate (‘A View from the Balloon at its Greatest Elevation’) trimmed at outer margin with loss outside of blue circle, a few small tears without loss and paper repairs to versos, some spotting and dust-soiling throughout, old paper repairs to blank inner margins of title-page and neat closed tear repairs to page VIII, upper hinges cracked, contemporary tree calf, rubbed and some edge wear, modern calf reback with leather label, 8vo Provenance: From the ballooning collection of Wilf Woollett. Abbey Life 386. Probably the first book on aviation meteorology and in which Baldwin recounts his flying experiences with Lunardi. It is also probably the first work to produce a ‘real’ aerial view.
