Outreach News

Better Comunication for Outreach Centre Staff Meetings between staff at our Outreach Centres and Ormskirk and Woodlands campuses have now become easier with the installation of webcams on staff PCs. The webcams provide the opportunity to have a meeting and conferencing room in a virtual environment. Outreach staff can all join in and see and hear each other to discuss and exchange views, questions and updates without having to leave the office. Ormskirk, Woodlands, Winsford, Wirral and Shrewsbury centres all have the webcams fitted. The prospect of facilitating and promoting communications with our staff at the centres through using the webcams is an exciting one and one that can only strengthen our team working ethos. They will enable us to have regular meetings without the loss of time spent in travelling to meet together and will at the very least contribute in a small way to Edge Hill’s Green Policy. Learning Technology

New LTD Manager - Dave Brooks I'm new to the University having only started on 1st January but I believe I have joined the University at a very exciting time, particularly with respect to e-learning. There is a growing use of e-learning and recognition of its place as both an on-site and distance learning tool.

Over the coming months the LTD Team will be rolling out Blackboard, the University's new Virtual Learning Environment and various other e-learning initiatives. In the longer term my role will be managing the LTD team in developing and implementing new and innovative e-learning technologies. If you would like to know more about the role of the Learning Technology Development Team and what we do, or about the current e-learning initiatives, please feel free to contact me. dave.brooks@edgehill.ac.uk

Skills Development

Inclusion in Education News The Learning and Skills Advisor post, with responsibility for liaison with Faculty of Education is currently vacant. The person covering the post on a temporary basis will continue until the position is filled.

The referral system implemented for students including those enrolled at Edge Hill’s Off Campus venues has been successful, increasing the number of students and tutors requesting and receiving Academic Writing Workshops and Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties support. Distance support given to students based at Outreach Venues who are not able to access 1:1 or group support, involves using Camstudio, which is software tool used to record all screen and audio activity. This allows a multisensory experience. The Solstice team, based in the new Faculty

Learning Services: Education Focus 2008

of Heath building, has used Camstudio extensively and is providing training for the Skills Development Team. This type of support will then include all the faculties.

Contact Dave Riley on 7817 for availability. QTS Skills Test Centre The QTS Skills Test Centre recently under went a number of improvements including the installation of new exam PC’s. New partitions were also put in place to divide the room into two areas, this reduces the amount of noise and the number of distractions the candidate may experience while taking tests.
