Johnstone Auction Mart Ltd. Moose Jaw, Sask. 4 miles West of Moose Jaw on Trans-Canada Highway
FOREWORD Welcome To LaBatte Simmentals 40th Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale, Friday, March 6th, 2020 at Johnstone Auction Mart, four miles west of Moose Jaw, SK on #1 highway. It’s a special one, our 40th annual! We would like to thank all the bidders and buyers from our past forty years for the continued support and effort you make to attend our sales, year after year. We really appreciate it. Lots of our bull and female customers have become good and close friends over the years and that is very important to us as well. Can’t believe it’s forty years that we’ve been making the trip to Johnstone Auction Mart, who have hosted all our sales. And to Transcon Livestock who have managed all our sales. I’m hoping I can make it to the 50th annual sale, time will tell. We’re so lucky my daughter-in-law and grandson are very interested in the purebred cattle and Lynlee, our son, works with the 300 head of commercial cows. As I write this foreword we are in a real cold snap right now. Makes calving a little more difficult but we seem to always get through it. The forecast in the near future looks like a real warming trend coming so that will be greatly appreciated. The calf and cow prices are going up rapidly in January with cow prices already over $.90, unusual for this time of year. And the calf prices have also been going up. The demand for those big, soggy Simmental and Simmental cross calves is bringing a premium and adding extra profit dollars to the commercial people’s pockets. Again this year East Poplar Simmentals, Kyron & Kelsey Manske of Coronach, SK, will be guest consigning approximately 20 bulls. Many are out of the 50 purebred cows they purchased from us in the fall of 2018. They are young, enthusiastic breeders that are a pleasure to work with. They believe in the same values as us, focusing on the commercial industry first, purchasing top bulls and semen packs to better raise quality beef bulls for the commercial industry. As for our bull sale offering we will be selling the first sons off IPU Lieutenant 24E. He was our top selling bull in our 2018 sale, selling for $52,000 to Hoegl Livestock and Bohrson Marketing. Both Kyron and I are very excited about his progeny. He’s so consistent in type and quality. Also in our red division we will have the first progeny off of Black Gold Approval 71E, a calving ease specialist that still maintains some growth and quality. He is mothered by one of the most impressive red cows in the business, RF Certainly Flirtin 532C. Add in the proven herd sires Red Century, Brooks and Red Zone, and we think our red section is as strong as ever. Our black section is headed up by Springcreek Liner 56U. We went back and bred some cows to him again and are we glad we did. Some very impressive, powerful sons are the result. Again some quality Bentley sons and some blaze face Priority bulls that are awesome. This might be the strongest set of black bulls we’ve ever sold. Our fullblood section is headed up by another new bull, Black Gold Elevation 20E. We are so impressed with his calves, both male and female. He sires dark red, goggle eyed, thick, meaty sons and also very good females. This is a bull you’re going to hear a lot more about. In the heifer division we will be selling a few less than usual in quantity but very high in quality. Highlighted by some outstanding Priority daughters, RJY Chip 18E daughters and also outstanding ¾ and ½ blood heifers. If you are unable to attend the sale, give myself or East Poplar Simmentals or any of the sale staff a call to have the sale offering evaluated for you. We can be reached on our cell phones: Barry 306-815-7900 or Kyron 306-267-7530 or Johnstone Auction Mart at 306-693-4715. The sale will also be broadcast live on dlms.ca, so contact Mark Shologan for more information and help getting approved for bidding at 780-699-5082. We welcome your visit to our farms anytime to see the bulls and heifers first hand. Come join us Thursday night at the Heritage Inn in our hospitality room for some socializing and laughs. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, March 6th at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK. Join us for a complimentary dinner prior to the sale and also after the sale for some socializing, refreshments and snacks. Best of luck in 2020 and hope to see you sale day.
P.S. Grandkids all doing great. Brodyn has turned sixteen and is driving legally now. He’s a big help on the farm. The rest are full of energy, growing like weeds and are keeping busy with their sports, girls in basketball and karate, boys in hockey, 4-H and curling. Nice to have them so close so that we are able to watch some of their games.

Homo Polled. Hetero Black. A great baldy bull to start our 2020 Spring Bull & Female Sale. This powerful Limitless son is thick, deep quartered, smooth made and has a beautiful haircoat. He was born unassisted out of a first calf heifer who went on to wean him off at 1010lbs actual weight in mid September. His dam is the $32,000 Deeg Ms Blue Moon 21E that ourselves and Circle 7 purchased as one of their high selling heifers at the 2017 Friday Night Lights Sale. We IVF’d her last spring and have three Liner 56U calves coming this spring off her. Very exciting! This powerful Limitless bull will add pounds and style to your calf crop and his females will be awesome.

The kind you’d like to have a whole herd of. Denali 15G is stout made, deep, has lots of top and muscle and a great haircoat. He would sire a great group of heavy, soggy calves, bulls, steers or replacement females. And as an added bonus he is homo polled and homo black.

He has a great set of EPDs, being above average in 11 of the 13 traits. He’s in the top 3% of the breed for calving ease, top 5% for birth weight and top 1% for maternal calving ease. Homo Polled. Homo Black by parentage. These two baldy, transplant full brothers are mothered by an exceptional cow, LFE BS Sheila 82A, many times champion on the show circuit and a top 10 finalist at Agribition Supreme Championship. Circle 7 and ourselves purchased five embryos from Mader Ranches, Canadian Donors and Rust Mountain, the owners of 82A, at a New Year’s Resolution sale. We were lucky enough to get four calves, these two bulls and two heifers. 125G and 129G would sire some awfully good replacement heifers with a mother like 82A and the exceptional females Hammer 308A is known for. It might be a good time to double down and take them both.

Homo Polled. Homo Black. Again, another true feature black bull. This Bentley sired son has been good since day one. He’s thick quartered, deep bodied, has a great haircoat and has that herdbull look about him. His dam has been a great producer for us, she’s just never missed. Her first calf, a heifer, sold to Rust Mountain View in our 2015 sale for $15,000. Her next calf, a baldy bull, to the Knupps at Weyburn, SK then an excellent, soggy Captain Black son to the Solbergs in Montana, her fourth, a stylish Liner 56U son, went to Casey Scrimbit, Crane Valley, next a high performing El Tigre daughter retained in our herd and now one of our favorites, Bentley 135G. Remember this guy is born February 18 but still has excellent performance. He ranked 2nd for adjusted weaning weight out of 60 other contemporaries. We think he’s the total package and he’s homo polled and homo black and we think homo good.
Homo Polled. Hetero Black. Another really good Priority son born the end of February. He’s a month and a half younger than some of these bulls but you have to appreciate his depth, thickness, hair and correctness. He is mothered by an exceptional Wallbanger cow going back to one of the best 56U daughters you’ll find. Brayden Schmidt of Westway Farms toured our place this summer and I think 70B was his pick of our black cows. She is impressive, very nice fronted, deep, deep bodied and has an excellent udder. 151C’s sire, MRK Priority 3C, is a herdbull that we are appreciating more and more all the time. His EPD profile is excellent, he calves very well, being in the top 2% of the breed for calving ease. Lots of his progeny have the money stripe, he sires both very marketable BW: 92. With his color, great haircoat, muscle and mass and huge top this is just a powerful, powerful bull. He weaned off his mother mid September at a whooping 1005lbs. His mother is a very impressive, polled Eclectic daughter with power and has a very good udder. 35G is polled/scurred which means if you bred 100 horned cows you should still get half polled calves, same as any hetero polled bull. We think this Elevation son is one of the best Fullblood bulls we’ve ever raised. We plan on collecting semen off him ourselves for in herd use, that’s how much we like him. If you’re looking for a powerful, dark red, goggle eyed Fullblood bull, he could be the one.

Am I ever glad we did as his bulls and females are tremendous. He’s moderate framed, thick made, smooth, has a good haircoat and should calve really easy with his 88lb birth weight, nice small head and the way he is nicely made through his shoulders. Peggy 2X has never missed a year calving. This will be her sixth bull to go through our sale. Previous bulls sold to Prairie Sky Land & Cattle, SK; LaCasse Farms, SK; Triple T Ranch, SK; Trevor Jones, SK; and in last year’s sale a Captain Scream son selling to 4S Farms Ltd. She’s also had an excellent Horizon daughter sell through Simmsational to Robb Farms. That’s quite a track record. Buy with confidence in this smooth made potential heifer bull.

Homo Polled. This has been one of our favorite red bulls all along. He’s mothered by an excellent Crosby dam who’s out of the great Pocahontas 68M cow. 140B has a perfect udder, just like her mother did. This is the third progeny in a row to go through this sale off 140B. Her first being a beautiful Red Deputy open female selling to KT Ranches for $15,000. The second, in last year’s sale, was our high selling red open heifer again, a stout Westcott heifer selling to Pheasantdale Simmentals for $9,250. And now this tremendously thick, dark cherry red Lieutenant son. With his eye appeal and pedigree we think this Lieutenant bull has a bright future ahead of him.

Hetero Polled. 73G is a powerful Lieutenant son out of Red Essence 217X going back to her dam the Pocahontas 68M cow family. This is Essence’s fourth bull to go through our sale. Previous bulls have sold to Cockburn Simmentals, Diamond K Cattle Co. and Glen Aldentaler, SD. And also she has produced a daughter that sold to Erixon Simmentals as one of the high sellers at Simmsational and she went on to produce one of their high selling bulls in their bull sale with the resulting calf she carried. This Lieutenant bull is a performance bull with his length, depth of body, smoothness and structure. He would sire a powerful set of heavy weaning steer and heifer calves that would push the scale down and put those extra dollars in your pocket.

We have sold several embryos and progeny of 89W, most notably the super IPU Red Zone daughter that sold in Simmsational to Wilson Stock Farms for $25,000. She is now an elite donor in Quinn’s powerful set of females he has put together and bred. 89W is now 11 years old and still has a picture perfect udder. Their mother, IPU 37A Ms Revlon 90C, has already produced a high seller out of our bull sale. Her first calf, IPU Dillinger 14E, sold for $28,000 to the good people at Lockhart Valley Simmentals. He is an IPU Dillinger 80B son that is cherry red, long as a freight train, had a 78lb birth weight and has turned into a calving ease sire but still his calves maintain some growth and performance. We saw 14E this past summer and he has grown into a very impressive bull. 90C’s second calf was a Captain Scream heifer that we are really high on and she will remain in our herd to carry on the Pocahontas 105L legacy. These two Code Red sons are moderate framed, deep sided, very smooth made and have an excellent set of EPDs, being in the top 50% in 12 of the 13 traits, from calving ease to API. Welcome to the LaBatte Simmentals Bull & Female Sale with East Poplar Simmentals! This is our second year as the guest consignor and it is an honour to be a part of a sale that is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary. That is a true testament to the LaBatte program and the dedication and commitment Barry has made to the breed and his customers. As young producers we are thankful to be able to learn from one of the best and appreciate what well established herds like the LaBatte’s have done for the Simmental breed over the years to make it the top breed in the cattle business today. East Poplar Simmentals may still be a new name and fresh faces to some of you so here is a little introduction. The farm is located east of Coronach, SK and we are strictly a cattle operation. In 2006, after many years of using Simmental bulls on our commercial cows, we decided to get into the purebred business. In 2014, Kyron moved back to the farm and took over the cattle operation. Today we run around 130 cows with about 110 being purebreds and the remainder commercials. Besides the cattle we have some other enterprises on the go. We do custom swathing and haying, are Gallagher and Stockade dealers and Kelsey is the Program Coordinator for the National Young Canadian Simmental Association. 2019 was a big leap forward for our operation with a large group of new females coming into production at our farm and a new sale. As you will see our offering this year is made up of a few different sire groups. With the group of LaBatte cows and our existing cow herd carrying much different services last year it made for a lot of variety. 32 different sire groups were born on our place last year so this explains the large variation in sire groups represented in this year’s sale. We utilize the two-stage weaning process and really love the low stress way of weaning the calves. This year we tried something different with the bull calves at weaning. The pairs were moved onto our multi species cover crop mix about a week before weaning and given a new paddock every 2 days to maximize the trampling effect on the paddocks. Once it came time to wean the calves off, the nose flaps were applied and the pairs were put back into the paddocks for another 5 days. At this time the cows were taken out and put in the pasture next to their calves and the bulls went back onto the cover crop mix for the next 5 weeks with daily moves. The bulls were quieter and spent more time grazing this way instead of being put on feed early in the fall. All the bulls are on our herd health program and will be semen tested and guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, but we do ask that any bulls that come back to our place for wintering are insured. Visitors are always welcome and the bulls are available to be viewed on the farm at any time or give us a call to discuss any of our offering. Videos of the bulls are available at www.eastpoplarsimmentals.com. We have an extensive list of professional sale consultants that can be of service if you are not able to make the sale and the sale will be broadcast live on www.dlms.ca. Hope to see you all March 6th at Johnstone Auction Mart in Moose Jaw, SK! Kyron , Kelsey & Embrie Manske

Homo Polled. This guy is one of my favorites in the pen. You have to love how soft made, massive ribbed, and deep quartered this guy is. He’s as deep as they come and has a puppy dog disposition. I have been a big fan of all of the SVS Brooks cattle that I have seen to date and we ended up purchasing a son, Sunny Valley Pride 36F, from Wayne and Linda last year and his first calves are starting to come now. EPS 921G’s dam is a tank of a cow, like all of the Horizon daughters. Barry sold a daughter off of her in Simmsational 2017 for $12,500 to Anchor D and a son through the sale last year to Cory BW: 89. AdjWW: 768. Homo Polled. A real good, moderate framed Lieutenant son here who is smooth in his lines and a good example of what Lieutenant is producing. We were very impressed with the Lieutenant calves this year. They are moderate framed, long spined and balanced. We feel one of the strengths of Lieutenant will be in his females as well. We have many half sisters in the replacement pen this year and we utilized him heavily again with a majority of our red cows being bred to him last year. EPS 913G will be a well-rounded type of bull with extra performance, but also excellent maternal value. His dam is a beautifully uddered female who comes from one of our most prominent cow families.

Starting from the front, he has a beautiful head and smooth shoulder which goes into a ton of middle and on to a wide and deep hind quarter. To see him on the move is a real treat and when you get a chance to further analyze his feet and leg structure you’ll see he is as sound as they come. He comes out of a nice moderate 56U daughter who has a beautiful udder and stems from the IPU 61R cow who I would say was one of the most underrated cows in Barry’s herd. IPU 61R was a half Fleck cow off the great PRL Houston 005H who did so many great things for Barry’s fullblood program.

His mother, Erixon Lady 38B, was named Grand Champion Simmental Female at the same show back in 2016 and was an RBC Beef Supreme Qualifier. Homo Polled. This guy is a good solid black bull who is straight in his lines, square over the hip, long bodied and athletic in his movement. He is an RF Capacity 742E son who was Rancier Farms high selling bull in 2018 to Deeg Simmentals and Canadian Sires. We have more Capacity calves hitting the ground right now and are excited to see what this young sire does in our herd.

Homo Polled. Hetero Black. Here’s our youngest bull in the sale, but you would never know it to see him. A true performance bull here, with the EPDs to back it up. EPS 980G has a ton of shape to his rib, depth to his quarter and extra length of spine. When you get behind him you have to admire the width through his pins and the way he carries that through his loin and right over his top. For a performance bull you have to appreciate how smooth he is through his shoulders and how he transitions nicely into his front end and into a perfect blaze face. I would love to see a pen of steers that look just like this guy in the feedlot.
FOREWORD LaBatte Simmentals will be consigning 12 open purebred heifers in this year’s sale again, including 7 black and 5 red heifers. This is one of the best sets of heifers we’ve consigned and they’re represented by some of our leading sires – R PLUS RED CENTURY 6200D, RJY CHIP 18E, SVS BROOKS 664D AND MRK PRIORITY 3C. If you have any questions about these heifers before the sale be sure to give us a call and we would be glad to go over them with you. Or, better yet, come and have a look at them before the sale. We would be glad to show you them and their brothers in the bull pen. We will be homo polled testing some of these heifers that we don’t know by parentage.

SALE FEATURE. This beautiful, solid black, blaze face heifer is definitely one of the best heifers we’ve ever sold whether in our heifer consignments at our bull sale or in Simmsational. She has been a star ever since she was born. She’s solid black with a beautiful blaze down her head, is feminine, deep bodied, angular shaped, really nice fronted, has a good haircoat and has an excellent set of EPDs, being well above average in 12 of the 13 traits. Just a brood cow in the making. She’s off a really good, good uddered Lotto daughter going back to the great D Bar C Blk Satin 680S cow who, at 14 years of age, still has a perfect udder. This Priority female is something special. Whether you want a show heifer, donor prospect or just a great front pasture cow she’s the answer. We will have her homo polled tested by sale time.

This is a really neat Priority half blood heifer. Her mother is an amazing young cow, the only purebred Black Angus we own. There’s a little story behind her. I saw a picture of her on Facebook and fell in love with her. She was selling at the Angus Keystone sale in Brandon along with her heifer calf at side. I phoned Gerry Bertholet of Maple Lake Stock Farms as he was consigning to this sale also. In short, we purchased the two year old for quite a bit of money and Gerry asked if he could be my partner and we were quite okay with that. As you can see in her picture she’s one terrific female. This Priority daughter of hers is going to be much like her. She’s just about an end of February calf, moderate, very pear shaped, deep bodied but really nice fronted and broody, broody. She should be homozygous polled and homozygous black as Priority is and 4C should be also.

Another great percentage heifer. She is sired by the 2019 Reserve Grand Champion Simmental Bull at Agribition, a thick made Riddler son shown by Mader Ranches. And we purchased this good heifer’s mother, a Brooking Bank Note half blood from Maders, at the SimmPower sale. This was the calf she was carrying. I gave 144G’s mother to Hayley & Brodyn for all the hard work they do helping around the farm and working with the purebred cattle. They are very excited to offer this beautiful three quarter heifer to you. She is so nice made, again pear shaped, very broody, has a great haircoat and is very stylish. She is going to become an excellent brood cow.
