CHRYSOPOEIA

"Fabrication de l'or").

2019 OIL ON LINEN FOUR PARTS EACH 233 X 200 CM The Greek term for alchemy is Chrysopoeia (Gk. "gold making"). Chrysopoeia is the range of philosophical chemistry and metaphysical poetics said to originate in Egypt with Hermes Trismegestus, the author of The Emerald Tablet. Poised as it is between human metamorphosis and the secrets of the elemental energies of nature as they become legible in the visible spectrum, alchemy is analogous to artistic creation-"poeia" and painting. Part of my life-project is to return Poetry to its place as the mother of the arts and nature.

2017 WATERCOLOR & PENCIL ON PAPER TEN PARTS EACH 190 X 140 CM

This aquarelle began as a poem I wrote in Basel, Switzerland, the text of which is inscribed in the first two parts... LE RHIN

Agate of Teuton Resolute unto solemnity You write my heart into the land here; In long letters you write my leavetaking. Indigo of mercy Infinite as citizenry Flow into our fluctuations Like the night when it rains Or the soaring of these silent stars As dawn escorts our constellations

BHUMISPARSHA

Bhumisparsha is a compound Sanskrit word: Bhumi (earth) Sparsha (touch) usually associated with the life of Sakyamuni, the Buddha. In traditional biographies of prince Siddhartha, on the eve of his illumination, he is faced with an army of demons, the chief of whom haughtily demands of the meditating prince, "Who authorized you to attain illumination!?" The reply of Siddhartha was twofold, physical and verbal: with his right hand he reached down and ever so elegantly touched the earth. The Buddha spoke: "The earth is my witness."
