DVSA steps up safeguards to protect learner drivers Jacqui Turland, the DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Registrar, has confirmed that she will treat driving instructors having sexual relationships with 16 and 17-year-old pupils as exploitation, even if it’s consensual. If an instructor is considered a high risk to learners, they face being removed from the ADI register. There are currently around 39,000 driving instructors in Great Britain and the majority of those offer a high standard of tuition and pride themselves on delivering excellent customer service. It’s important that learner drivers get a high-quality service from their instructor. Learners and their parents need to be confident that their instructor will: • act in a professional manner at all times • provide them with the skills they need to drive safely on modern roads To ensure the safety of learner drivers, all driving instructors are subject to enhanced criminal record checks which must be renewed every 4 years. However, from April 2016 to March 2017 there were 109 investigations into instructor misconduct, which includes inappropriate sexual behaviour and other offences. DVSA will investigate serious allegations of improper 8 Small Business Fleet Management
behaviour and refer its findings to the police. These allegations include instructors: • using sexualised language • using unnecessary physical contact • making inappropriate contact with their pupils • sending indecent messages or images to their pupils Andy Rice, DVSA Head of Counter-Fraud and Investigations, said: “DVSA’s priority is to help you through a lifetime of safe driving. We take the safety of learner drivers extremely seriously and will thoroughly investigate any complaints about the conduct of instructors and will involve the police where necessary. Any driving instructors threatening the safety of learner drivers and failing to meet the ‘fit and proper’ criteria will be removed from the ADI register.”
DVSA is also reminding learner drivers that: • it’s illegal for driving instructors to use a handheld phone while the learner is driving • it’s unacceptable for instructors to be impatient, shout or swear at them during their lessons You should also report any contractual issues you have with your instructor to DVSA, such as: • lessons that are shorter than agreed • the instructor arriving late • the instructor cancelling lessons • the instructor failing to provide lessons you’ve paid for in advance DVSA will ask the instructor about the matter on your behalf. However, DVSA can’t help you get any money back.

Volvo Cars reveals new XC60 premium SUV Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has revealed the longawaited new XC60 premium SUV at the Geneva Motor Show. The new car replaces Volvo’s highly successful original XC60, which in the nine years since its launch became the best-selling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, with nearly a million units sold globally. The XC60 today represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales. “We have a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic

As in the 90 series cars, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available. “The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of wellresolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology – all perfectly blended together. Ford maintains sales lead as CV range outpaces market performance UK market leader Ford increased CV sales and share, recording growth in October’s CV market as sales of the all-new Fiesta reinforced its leadership of total vehicle, car and commercial vehicle markets. Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: “Ford continues to carry strong sales momentum as we more to the end of the year. Our CV sales continue to grow and it’s particularly rewarding to see the all-new Fiesta strengthening its leadership position as we continue the launch of the full model range. “Fiesta is being well received and we’ll see the model range joined by Vignale and STLine this year. Fiesta Active and ST are still to come to complete the line-up of our most technologically advanced Fiesta ever.” The official figures released

by the SMMT today show that total car sales in October were down 12.2 per cent to 158,192 units, compared with October 2016. Ford car sales performed better than the market with 19,270 sales as Fiesta was once again the UK best-seller. For the year to date (end October) total UK car sales were 2,224,603, down 4.5 per cent compared with the same period in 2016. Ford car sales for this period were 253,760 some 74,628 registrations ahead of its nearest rival. Ford is the clear leader in retail car sales, which most accurately reflect the preferences of private buyers. At 14.3 per cent, Ford’s October retail car sales share was 4.7 percentage points ahead of its nearest rival, and for the year to date, Ford’s retail car sales share was 11.7 per cent, a lead of 4.1 percentage points.
The Ford Fiesta notched up 7,256 sales in October and with total registrations of 83,070 for the year to date, the Fiesta is the UK best seller by a significant margin – 20,505 sales and 1.1 percentage points of market share ahead of its nearest competitor. The JS SUV segment continued to grow, up 6.3 per cent in October. Kuga registrations in October were 2,493, up 16.9 per cent, compared with October 2016, and sales for the year to date of 33,924 are up 8.2 per cent, compared with the same period in 2016. UK commercial vehicle sales in October were down 7.4 per cent at 24,968, compared with October 2016. At 7,853, total sales of Ford CVs were up 3.0 per cent, compared with October 2016. For the year to date, total UK CV sales were down 3.5 per cent at 318,664, compared with the same period in 2016. Total sales of Ford CVs for the year to date were up 2.1 per cent at 97,767, compared with 2016. Ford commercial vehicle market share continues to increase, standing at 31.2 per cent for October, up from 27.8 per cent in October 2016. For the year to date, Ford CV share increased from 30.6 per cent to 32.1per cent, compared with the same period in 2016.

New T4 petrol engine joins the Volvo S90 and V90 ranges Volvo Car UK has released a new petrol engine in its premium S90 and V90 model ranges, offering greater choice for drivers, particularly company motorists. Drivers who want an alternative to diesel can now opt for the T4 version of the S90 saloon and V90 estate. Powered by a Euro VI four-cylinder petrol engine and mated to an automatic gearbox as standard, it generates 190 hp and offers impressive fuel economy figures – 42.2 mpg in the S90 and 40.9 mpg in the V90, both on the combined cycle. Frugal new Ford Fiesta's double win in MPG marathon The new Ford Fiesta smashed records on the UK’s annual MPG Marathon proving its fuel-sipping credentials within months of going on sale. While the petrol new Fiesta on the 350-mile event was turbocharged and boasted 125PS, smooth driving techniques sealed an average 97mpg – blitzing the previous 84mpg record and crowning it new Petrol Champion. The diesel new Fiesta beat the 108.8mpg benchmark set five years ago by the prior Ford supermini by pushing the record up to 122mpg to take Overall Champion title. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the boot or cabin 4. Remove empty roof racks and keep windows shut, especially before driving at high speeds. This will reduce wind resistance, reducing fuel use by up to 10 per cent 5. Drive smoothly, looking as
far as possible ahead – and behind. Sudden acceleration and braking penalise fuel economy 6. When accelerating, select higher gears as early as possible. Transit Connect and Transit Courier are an important part of the latest four-model Transit family, which has driven Ford to become Europe’s No. 1-selling commercial vehicle brand, with sales exceeding 276,000 in October year-to-date, an increase of eight per cent over 2016. New Volvo XC40 named 2018 European Car of the Year The new Volvo XC40 small SUV has been named the 2018 European Car of the Year ahead of the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. It is the first win of this prestigious award for Volvo Cars, the premium car maker. “Winning this award with our new XC40 is perfect timing,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fastgrowing small SUV segment.” The XC40 win means that the complete line-up of new global Volvo SUVs have each been named Car of the Year in either Europe or North America. Both the large XC90 and mid-size XC60 were awarded the North American Truck/Utility of the Year title in the past two years. The 2018 European Car of the Year award follows other recent recognition for the XC40,

Drive safely through the winter weather with Fiat Fullback Rain, snow, ice, high winds – winter has certainly arrived. But that can’t stop the UK’s tradesmen and professionals from carrying on doing their jobs. And while life, and work, must go on, it’s important that drivers do so in safety.
With that in mind Fiat Professional, which builds the popular Fullback pick-up, has teamed up with leading road safety advisor Paul Ripley to issue a Top 10 list of winter driving tips to help van users stay safe in poor weather.
With or without the extra driver’s assistance offered by the Fiat Fullback – which comes with four wheel drive as standard – the advice makes good sense for all drivers setting out on the road this winter.
PAUL RIPLEY’S TOP 10 WINTER DRIVING TIPS MATCH SPEED TO CONDITIONS: Common sense tells us this is a key safe driving requirement in winter. Your overall safety and survival is enhanced by slowing down and using higher gears to aid traction when necessary. SKIDDING: Too much speed on a slippery surface may result in a skid but with the traction support systems this is easily managed by coming off the accelerator. Generally this will remove the cause. AQUAPLANING: Look for standing surface water and slow down on approach if you can. When aquaplaning, braking has no effect so come off the accelerator, hold the steering wheel tightly and when grip returns, point your wheels in the right direction. DRIVING ON ICE: In this situation the steering feels light. If you slide at 10mph then try to drive at say 4mph. Where possible, use engine braking. The correct use of very low speed is crucial. MAINTAINING TRACTION: 4x4s offer far better grip in snow conditions but it doesn’t make drivers invincible. Respect the need to maintain traction and control by always ensuring a safe speed. 40 Small Business Fleet Management
BRAKING DISTANCES: Braking distances in snow or ice conditions can be far greater than anticipated so extend separation distances greatly. If practical and possible, use engine braking to lose speed smoothly. ARE THE ROADS ICY?: If you’ve had to scrape ice from your vehicle then it’s fair to assume the roads will be in the same condition. Always link ice to lower road speeds. SMOOTH IS SAFER: Never snatch the steering or make abrupt use of the brakes or accelerator – be smooth and gentle with the vehicle’s controls. ABS BRAKES ON ICE: Be aware that using ABS on slick ice / packed snow doesn’t offer the same stopping advantages. Consider using engine braking and always brake much earlier in such treacherous conditions. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT?: To aid safety on wet winter roads, increase following distances by at least twice what is normal and in snow and ice conditions, by at least 10 times. Always try to create a cocoon of safe space.

Volvo XC60 named UK Car of the Year The Volvo XC60 has been crowned overall Car of the Year at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2018. This comes only a month after it was crowned Best Medium Crossover by the same judges. The UK Car of the Year Awards recognise the best new cars on sale in the UK. The awards are judged by 27 leading UK motoring journalists, who all write for influential titles such as The Sunday Times, The Independent, The Telegraph, Top Gear, Auto Express, CAR, Honest John.co.uk, Auto Trader and Motoring.co.uk.
