DS 7 CROSSBACK: the first newgeneration DS Launched on 1st June 2014, DS Automobiles is presently surfing the crest of a wave. Due to bold innovation, cutting-edge technology and the experience enjoyed by our customers, we were determined to re-establish these distinguished initials within the French automobile industry, and the men and women who work for the brand have spent three passionate years turning that vision into reality. Above all, this entailed producing exceptional cars, and the design of the DS 7 CROSSBACK – the first new-generation DS – began immediately after the brand’s creation. Its proportions, refined styling and the technologies it packs are exactly what we want DS to stand for. 4 Small Business Fleet Management

At the same time, the DS 7 CROSSBACK is being marketed via a bespoke, innovative, multi-channel network that is exclusive to DS, our wish being to provide our customers with an exceptional experience, not only in our DS Stores and DS Salons, but also digitally. Our sales outlets have been conceived not as conventional dealerships but as luxury stores where customers can extend their relationship with us that began in virtual form due to DS Virtual Vision. There are some 400 new DS sales points opening up every day around the world and 60 or so of which are in the UK. With our Only You programme offering a comprehensive range of exclusive services, including DS Rent – which provides an

opportunity to discover the range by hiring a model – and the DS Privilege club, with its MyDS app, we are breaking new ground when it comes to delivering an engaging brand experience. The response we have received to the creation of our DS world confirms that we have brought something new to the market. As part of a large group, yet with the flexibility of a startup business, the DS brand has been created, shaped and built by teams who are passionate about their work and these three years of work are now bearing fruit. Our first reward will be to see the first customers join us in writing a fresh chapter in the history of 21st century motoring as they take to the wheel of their DS 7 CROSSBACK.

DVSA steps up safeguards to protect learner drivers Jacqui Turland, the DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Registrar, has confirmed that she will treat driving instructors having sexual relationships with 16 and 17-year-old pupils as exploitation, even if it’s consensual. If an instructor is considered a high risk to learners, they face being removed from the ADI register. There are currently around 39,000 driving instructors in Great Britain and the majority of those offer a high standard of tuition and pride themselves on delivering excellent customer service. It’s important that learner drivers get a high-quality service from their instructor. Learners and their parents need to be confident that their instructor will: • act in a professional manner at all times • provide them with the skills they need to drive safely on modern roads To ensure the safety of learner drivers, all driving instructors are subject to enhanced criminal record checks which must be renewed every 4 years. However, from April 2016 to March 2017 there were 109 investigations into instructor misconduct, which includes inappropriate sexual behaviour and other offences. DVSA will investigate serious allegations of improper 8 Small Business Fleet Management

behaviour and refer its findings to the police. These allegations include instructors: • using sexualised language • using unnecessary physical contact • making inappropriate contact with their pupils • sending indecent messages or images to their pupils Andy Rice, DVSA Head of Counter-Fraud and Investigations, said: “DVSA’s priority is to help you through a lifetime of safe driving. We take the safety of learner drivers extremely seriously and will thoroughly investigate any complaints about the conduct of instructors and will involve the police where necessary. Any driving instructors threatening the safety of learner drivers and failing to meet the ‘fit and proper’ criteria will be removed from the ADI register.”

DVSA is also reminding learner drivers that: • it’s illegal for driving instructors to use a handheld phone while the learner is driving • it’s unacceptable for instructors to be impatient, shout or swear at them during their lessons You should also report any contractual issues you have with your instructor to DVSA, such as: • lessons that are shorter than agreed • the instructor arriving late • the instructor cancelling lessons • the instructor failing to provide lessons you’ve paid for in advance DVSA will ask the instructor about the matter on your behalf. However, DVSA can’t help you get any money back.

Balancing road safety with air quality – a RoSPA Conference

Road and environment professionals from across the private, public and third sectors will meet to discuss how road safety, public health and air quality priorities can support each other. The RoSPA Road Safety Conference 2018 will feature talks and discussions on how to increase walking and cycling, reducing air pollution, speed humps, 20mph limits and zones, policy making and changing road behaviours. Open to any professional working in the road, public health and air quality fields, 10 Small Business Fleet Management

speakers on the day include RoSPA’s head of road safety Kevin Clinton, director of Urban Movement John Dales, Dr Sarah Jones, a consultant in environmental health protection at Public Health Wales, and principal city planner for Transport for London Naomi Baster. There will be breaks for networking, and opportunities to quiz the day’s speakers. Kevin Clinton said: “With growing concerns over the quality of the air we breathe, and a plateau in the number of people being killed and seriously

injured on our roads, it’s vitally important that we work to tackle both of these issues in ways that complement each other. “RoSPA is hoping to facilitate discussions that will meet this aim, by bringing researchers, policy-makers and influencers together under one roof.” The conference, sponsored by Britax Römer, is taking place on Wednesday, March 7 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Volvo Cars reveals new XC60 premium SUV Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has revealed the longawaited new XC60 premium SUV at the Geneva Motor Show. The new car replaces Volvo’s highly successful original XC60, which in the nine years since its launch became the best-selling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, with nearly a million units sold globally. The XC60 today represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales. “We have a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic

Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions. “We have focused on building a car that can deliver pleasure to all of your senses – from a commanding view of the road ahead in a beautifully appointed and calm cabin, to a safe, inspired and confident ride,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Product & Quality at Volvo Car Group. “We’ve paid particular attention to making life easier for

SUVs that offer the latest in technology. The new XC60 will be no exception. It’s the perfect car for an active lifestyle, and it represents the next step in our transformation plan,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive, Volvo Car Group. The new XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the ground-breaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses Steer Assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo’s

The new XC60 offers Volvo’s award-winning T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid at the top of the powertrain range, delivering 407 hp and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds.

“We have a wide range of powertrains. The new XC60 will be launched with the diesel D4 engine at 190 hp and the D5 with PowerPulse technology delivering 235 hp. We also have the petrolpowered T5 delivering 254 hp and the T6 which, with both turbo and superchargers attached, delivers 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque,” added Henrik Green. But it is not just under the bonnet that the new XC60 delivers healthy performance. The new CleanZone four-zone climate control system removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside. Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment and connected services offer, Sensus, and the Volvo On Call app both receive a graphical update with improved usability. As in the 90 series cars, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available. “The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of wellresolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology – all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience, which will make our customers feel special,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group. Citroën Dispatch named Best Large Trades Van in Business Van of the Year 2018

The Citroën Dispatch has added yet another trophy to the growing list of awards that it accumulated in 2017, by winning the Best Large Trades Van category in the Business Van Awards 2018. The latest honour was presented during an awards lunch earlier this week, held at the renowned Scott’s of Mayfair restaurant, where James Bond creator Ian Fleming is said to have discovered the dry Martini, “Shaken, not stirred.” The Best Large Trades Van prize was presented to the Dispatch 1.6 BlueHDi 115 S&S M 1000 Enterprise and the win was shared with the Peugeot Expert, which is powered by the same low emission Euro-6 16 Small Business Fleet Management

diesel engine. Editorial Director of Business Vans, Ralph Morton, said: "The Best Large Trades Van category was inseparable between the Citroën Dispatch and the Peugeot Expert. Both vans are the latest from the PSA Group and offer smart styling, really good running costs and a dealer network that has plenty of offers for the SME sector. So the independent judges have awarded a joint victory in this highly competitive category." “2017 was the first full year of New Dispatch sales”, explains Kris Cholmondeley, Head of Business Sales for Citroën UK. “As a result, Dispatch sales rose by 30%

cent in the UK last year, in a sector where sales fell across the board. Instead, we saw the popularity of the Dispatch with SMEs gain real momentum. Winning this Business Van of the Year accolade shows what a versatile product the Dispatch has become – and an excellent choice for any Large Trades Van user.” This Business Van of the Year win is the seventh top UK honour for the Citroën Dispatch since its launch in 2016. It is also the second of 2018, with a What Van? award already in the Citroën UK trophy cabinet. To arrange a test drive of the latest Citroën LCV models, visit any Citroën Business Centre.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 achieves maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating

The all-new Mazda CX-5 has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. Based on their rigorous independent crash testing, plus evaluation of Mazda’s sophisticated driver assistance systems, Euro NCAP’s fivestar rating is comprehensive endorsement of the all-new CX5’s passive and active safety. Equipped with Mazda’s advanced and innovative i-ACTIVSENSE driver-supporting safety technologies that deliver class-leading active safety performance, the all-new CX-5’s high strength SKYACTIV-BODY also ensures passive safety is exemplary, too. With a body that absorbs and disperses impact force efficiently within the engine compartment to more effectively suppress cabin deformation during a collision, the all-new CX-5 features optimally shaped reinforcement at the base of the A pillars. In addition, the A pillars are now fabricated in 1,180 MPa ultra-high-tensile steel, which combines weight reduction with a 22 Small Business Fleet Management

higher level of collision safety. Enhancing side collision performance, a solid H-shaped ring structure joining the roof and B pillars to the underbody combines with two side impact bars in each front door and one in each rear door to prevent cabin deformation. The use of 980 MPa ultra-high-tensile steel in the B pillars and side sills further improves cabin strength without weight increase penalties. To the rear, side sub-frames efficiently absorb and disperse impact energy, while a frame layout and structure protects the fuel tank and helps prevent fuel leakage in the event of a collision. It comes fitted with six airbags – dual front, side airbags and fulllength curtain, while three-point seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters and ISOFIX child seat anchor points equip the left and right rear seats, completing the standard safety package. With meticulous attention paid to lowering the risk of pedestrian impact injury, the all-new CX5‘s safety reach extends to

other road users, as well. Holes and cutouts within the bonnet reinforcements create an easily crushable structure that helps mitigate injury to a pedestrian‘s head in the event of an accident. In addition, the cowl panel employs an S-shaped structural cross-section that acts like a spring to help better absorb energy. Energy-absorbing foam placed within the front bumper helps limit the degree of injury to a pedestrian‘s legs, while a lower bumper stiffener helps prevent the legs from sliding under the front of the car. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE intelligent active safety technology supports day-to-day use, delivering a level of driver support that’s perfectly aligned to Mazda’s ‘Love of Driving’ approach. Standard across the range Advanced Smart City Brake Support (Advanced SCBS) uses a forward sensing camera to automatically stop or reduce the speed of the car when there is a risk of collision with the vehicle or pedestrian in front. The system alerts the driver using a warning sound and graphic indication, and if it detects a collision is imminent and unavoidable, the system automatically applies the brakes. With robust passive safety and advanced active safety technology, the Euro NCAP fivestar all-new Mazda CX-5 delivers class-leading safety alongside the driver engagement you’d expect from Mazda.

New T4 petrol engine joins the Volvo S90 and V90 ranges Volvo Car UK has released a new petrol engine in its premium S90 and V90 model ranges, offering greater choice for drivers, particularly company motorists. Drivers who want an alternative to diesel can now opt for the T4 version of the S90 saloon and V90 estate. Powered by a Euro VI four-cylinder petrol engine and mated to an automatic gearbox as standard, it generates 190 hp and offers impressive fuel economy figures – 42.2 mpg in the S90 and 40.9 mpg in the V90, both on the combined cycle. The T4 versions are available from entry-level Momentum to luxurious Inscription Pro form, and share the high level of standard features as their existing diesel and petrol-electric hybrid siblings – this includes Volvo’s ground-breaking Sensus nine-inch touch screen control system, satellite navigation with Real Time Traffic Information*, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and leather-faced upholstery. Depending on the trim level, T4 versions are available with wheels ranging from 18 to 21 inches. The T4 engine joins the S90 and V90 ranges alongside the T6 in the V90 Cross Country, 26 Small Business Fleet Management

which was the first V90 variant to be offered as a pure petrol. Volvo Car UK’s Head of Business Sales, Steve Beattie, commented: “Petrol is becoming an increasingly popular choice with motorists,

including business users. It’s imperative we offer the range of engines that our customers demand, and we expect strong interest in the S90 and V90 T4.” The S90 and V90 T4 are available to order now.

Frugal new Ford Fiesta's double win in MPG marathon The new Ford Fiesta smashed records on the UK’s annual MPG Marathon proving its fuel-sipping credentials within months of going on sale. While the petrol new Fiesta on the 350-mile event was turbocharged and boasted 125PS, smooth driving techniques sealed an average 97mpg – blitzing the previous 84mpg record and crowning it new Petrol Champion. The diesel new Fiesta beat the 108.8mpg benchmark set five years ago by the prior Ford supermini by pushing the record up to 122mpg to take Overall Champion title. Ex- works rally team Andy Dawson and Andrew Marriott drove the petrol Fiesta and journalist Paul Clifton with Ian McKean piloted the diesel. Both

six-speed cars were coaxed to exceed their official mpg numbers by 48.3 and 51.2 per cent respectively. They followed six simple Ford eco-driving tips which can help all drivers save fuel – and money: 1. Service your car and check the oil level regularly. Correctly maintained cars operate more efficiently 2. Check tyre pressures monthly. Underinflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to four per cent 3. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the boot or cabin 4. Remove empty roof racks and keep windows shut, especially before driving at high speeds. This will reduce wind resistance, reducing fuel use by up to 10 per cent 5. Drive smoothly, looking as

far as possible ahead – and behind. Sudden acceleration and braking penalise fuel economy 6. When accelerating, select higher gears as early as possible. Ford models have gear-shift indicators to optimise gear selection Andy Dawson, Ford lead driver on the MPG Marathon, said: “Maximising fuel economy not only saves money, but smooth driving can also be fun thanks to the new Fiesta’s brilliant steering and suspension. Using less fuel also means reduced emissions, limiting motorists’ environmental impact.” The all-new Ford Fiesta has been on sale since July, with over 15,000 sold to date. The UK favourite has been Britain’s best seller every year since 2008.

Ford reveals the new Transit Connect and Transit Courier

Ford has revealed the first details of the new Transit Connect and Transit Courier – part of a Ford product revolution that will see the company’s entire commercial line-up in Europe renewed during the next 18 months. Transit Connect and Transit Courier are an important part of the latest four-model Transit family, which has driven Ford to become Europe’s No. 1-selling commercial vehicle brand, with sales exceeding 276,000 in October year-to-date, an increase of eight per cent over 2016. nameplate sales. Featuring stylish new designs, more fuel-efficient powertrains* and advanced new driver assistance technologies, the two new Transit models will be available to order in spring 2018 for customer delivery from the middle of the year. “Ford’s latest Transit family has taken the European market

by storm, and we have no intention of taking our foot off the gas,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe. “We’ve given our two smaller Transits a complete overhaul that makes them even more affordable to run, more stylish to look at, and ready to tackle every job our customers throw at them.”

New Volvo XC40 named 2018 European Car of the Year The new Volvo XC40 small SUV has been named the 2018 European Car of the Year ahead of the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. It is the first win of this prestigious award for Volvo Cars, the premium car maker. “Winning this award with our new XC40 is perfect timing,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fastgrowing small SUV segment.” The XC40 win means that the complete line-up of new global Volvo SUVs have each been named Car of the Year in either Europe or North America. Both the large XC90 and mid-size XC60 were awarded the North American Truck/Utility of the Year title in the past two years. The 2018 European Car of the Year award follows other recent recognition for the XC40,

34 Small Business Fleet Management

including the Car of the Year award by leading UK automotive publication What Car?. The XC40 sets a new standard in its segment in terms of design, connectivity and safety technology. Early orders in excess of 20,000 cars across Europe and the US indicate that this is an appealing combination for customers. The XC40 roll-out will soon extend to China – the world’s biggest car market – where Volvo is expecting similar strong interest. The XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars’ new compact modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all upcoming cars in the 40 series, including fully electrified vehicles. Co-developed together with Geely, CMA provides the company with the necessary economies of scale for this segment. The XC40 is also the first Volvo to come with a car-sharing feature, enabled via Volvo’s digital

key technology and its connected services platform, Volvo On Call. XC40 owners can simply share their car with family and friends without having to hand over a physical key.* In another first, the XC40 launched Volvo Cars’ new subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car access via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a mobile phone. Safety and driver-assistance features on the XC40 include Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road Protection and Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, and the 360° camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces. The XC40 also offers ingenious interior design and storage ideas, with more functional storage space in the doors and under the seats, a special space for phones (including inductive charging), a foldout hook for small bags, plus a removable waste bin in the tunnel console. In 2017, the company announced its commitment to electrify all Volvo Cars launched from 2019. In line with this leadership position in electrification, a hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later. More details will be available in due course.

The JCT600 story – a family business at heart Last year was hugely signifcant as we marked our 70th anniversary. Our story began in 1946 when Edward Tordoff and two other partners established Tordoff Motors Ltd. Following the death of his father, Jack Tordoff bought all the shares and built a new showroom next to the original garage. Having bought a Mercedes 600 bearing the registration plate ‘JCT600’ – Jack’s initials and the car model – he was inspired to create the brand we know today. From those humble beginnings, JCT600 has grown into one of the UK’s largest and most respected motor retailers, representing 18 of the worlds most iconic brands across 50 locations throughout Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and the North East.

Find out more about JCT600’s history by viewing our videos with Chairman Jack Tordoff

People are the key to our success. With around 2,000 colleagues and four generations of the Tordoff family among these, JCT600 remains a proud family business. Yet despite our stature, with annual turnover in excess of £1bn, our vision remains the same as it’s always been – we don’t want to be the biggest, we just want to be the best! We are enormously proud of the support we offer to our annual nominated charity and the numerous others close to our colleagues’ hearts. We are honoured to support our local communities through various sponsorship programmes, both large and small, and actively promote Environmental Awareness through a range of initiatives and investment. JCT600 is not just a business. It has a soul.

Drive safely through the winter weather with Fiat Fullback Rain, snow, ice, high winds – winter has certainly arrived. But that can’t stop the UK’s tradesmen and professionals from carrying on doing their jobs. And while life, and work, must go on, it’s important that drivers do so in safety.

With that in mind Fiat Professional, which builds the popular Fullback pick-up, has teamed up with leading road safety advisor Paul Ripley to issue a Top 10 list of winter driving tips to help van users stay safe in poor weather.

With or without the extra driver’s assistance offered by the Fiat Fullback – which comes with four wheel drive as standard – the advice makes good sense for all drivers setting out on the road this winter.

PAUL RIPLEY’S TOP 10 WINTER DRIVING TIPS MATCH SPEED TO CONDITIONS: Common sense tells us this is a key safe driving requirement in winter. Your overall safety and survival is enhanced by slowing down and using higher gears to aid traction when necessary. SKIDDING: Too much speed on a slippery surface may result in a skid but with the traction support systems this is easily managed by coming off the accelerator. Generally this will remove the cause. AQUAPLANING: Look for standing surface water and slow down on approach if you can. When aquaplaning, braking has no effect so come off the accelerator, hold the steering wheel tightly and when grip returns, point your wheels in the right direction. DRIVING ON ICE: In this situation the steering feels light. If you slide at 10mph then try to drive at say 4mph. Where possible, use engine braking. The correct use of very low speed is crucial. MAINTAINING TRACTION: 4x4s offer far better grip in snow conditions but it doesn’t make drivers invincible. Respect the need to maintain traction and control by always ensuring a safe speed. 40 Small Business Fleet Management

BRAKING DISTANCES: Braking distances in snow or ice conditions can be far greater than anticipated so extend separation distances greatly. If practical and possible, use engine braking to lose speed smoothly. ARE THE ROADS ICY?: If you’ve had to scrape ice from your vehicle then it’s fair to assume the roads will be in the same condition. Always link ice to lower road speeds. SMOOTH IS SAFER: Never snatch the steering or make abrupt use of the brakes or accelerator – be smooth and gentle with the vehicle’s controls. ABS BRAKES ON ICE: Be aware that using ABS on slick ice / packed snow doesn’t offer the same stopping advantages. Consider using engine braking and always brake much earlier in such treacherous conditions. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT?: To aid safety on wet winter roads, increase following distances by at least twice what is normal and in snow and ice conditions, by at least 10 times. Always try to create a cocoon of safe space.

Fuel consumption figures for the Fiat Professional range in mpg (l/100km): Urban 33.6 (8.4) – 60.1 (4.7); Extra Urban 43.5 (6.5) – 80.7 (3.5); Combined 39.2 (7.2) – 72.4 (3.9). CO2 emissions 104 – 189 g/km. Fuel consumption and CO figures based on standard EU tests for comparative purposes and may not reflect real driving results. Factors such as driving style, weather and road conditions may also have a significant effect on 2

Honda to unveil the all-new CR-V at the Geneva Motor Show Honda is set to reveal the European production version of the all-new CR-V at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The new generation of the world’s bestselling SUV* raises the bar in terms of interior quality, refinement and spaciousness – including, for the first time, the option of seven seats on petrol models. The chassis is also the most sophisticated ever created for a CR-V, and ensures the car delivers an engaging driving experience with exemplary ride comfort, as well as genuine offroad capability. The all-new CR-V has a fresh and sophisticated exterior design, with broader, muscular wheel arches, sharper contours on the bonnet and rear quarters, as well as the latest Honda family ‘face’ with its signature headlight graphic.

42 Small Business Fleet Management

Thinner A-pillars, sculpted front and rear bumpers, and underengine and under-floor covers all help to make the new CR-V one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles in its class. It also incorporates Honda’s Active Shutter Grille system, which further improves fuel efficiency. The new interior design incorporates a horizontal emphasis to the dashboard layout to highlight the more spacious cabin, by accentuating the feeling of width and conveying a sense of strength. The dashboard features two 7-inch displays, while the layout of controls has been rationalised with a simple cluster for air-conditioning management located beneath the central touchscreen. The all-new CR-V boasts slightly larger exterior proportions than its predecessor, and the

longer wheelbase and wider stance enable a significantly roomier interior. Best-in-class space efficiency is highlighted by generous accommodation for all occupants, as well as a wider, deeper boot with a longer load bay. A new two-position boot floor enables a flat surface for loading larger items, while a Hands-Free Action power tailgate enables convenient loading access. Clever features make the new CR-V easier to use every day. For example, the height of the tailgate when opened can be programmed to avoid contact with low ceilings, and cabin flexibility is boosted by a threemode centre-console storage. Furthermore, new single-action ‘dive down’ 60:40 split-fold second-row seat backs enable faster, easier loading.

The perfect lifestyle: Volkswagen Amarok picks up another industry accolade The multi-talented Volkswagen Amarok has added to its impressive award collection by driving off with Professional pickup and 4x4 magazine’s Lifestyle Pickup of the Year 2018 title. The reigning International Pickup of the Year comfortably eclipsed its rivals to take top honours. Unlike many other awards, the Professional pick-up and 4x4 awards are judged by professional users rather than journalists or industry experts. This ensures that the feedback and opinion from the judging panel is even more relevant to potential customers. Explaining the criteria for the Lifestyle Pickup of the Year category, Liam Campbell, Editor of Professional pick-up and 4x4 magazine said: “We wanted to find the pickup that best lends itself to the lifestyle market. Our judging panel went in search of comfort and convenience 44 Small Business Fleet Management

features, along with great ride and handling and lots of legroom.” This award is the latest in a series of high-profile industry accolades to be awarded to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2018. The brand came home with no fewer than five trophies from the recent Business Van Awards, with the Amarok named as the best pickup and the Caddy named overall Van of the Year. “The judges cited the excellent driving manners, spacious interior and high levels of specification as the main reasons for the Amarok’s triumph in the ‘Lifestyle’ category,” added Campbell. “Both on and off the road, the Amarok excelled thanks to the powerful 3.0-litre V6 and the faultless permanent 4WD system.” Commenting on the Amarok’s latest award, Alice Halliwell, Amarok Product Manager said: “This is an important award

for us because it is judged by professional users – the kind of people who depend on their vehicle, day-in-day out. The Amarok has proved itself to be a fantastic all-rounder, and this award highlights the fact that it can combine workplace chores with comfort and convenience.” Launched in late 2016, the new Amarok marked a step change in the model’s history. Along with a refreshed external look, it also gained a new 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine, an all-new interior and the latest in in-car infotainment systems, safety and technology. Volvo XC60 named UK Car of the Year The Volvo XC60 has been crowned overall Car of the Year at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2018. This comes only a month after it was crowned Best Medium Crossover by the same judges. The UK Car of the Year Awards recognise the best new cars on sale in the UK. The awards are judged by 27 leading UK motoring journalists, who all write for influential titles such as The Sunday Times, The Independent, The Telegraph, Top Gear, Auto Express, CAR, Honest, Auto Trader and John Challen, Editor and Managing Director of the UK Car of the Year Awards, said: "The XC60 being crowned UK Car of the Year 2018 is very well deserved, at a time when crossovers are becoming increasingly popular. Having been runner-up in 2016 with the XC90, it's fantastic to see Volvo now claim the top spot with its smaller – but every bit as

impressive – stablemate." The XC60 offers classleading connectivity. Volvo's innovative nine-inch touch screen control system is fitted as standard across the range. The intuitive system means the car's important functions and apps are only a swipe or click away. Using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can even access your phone's key functions such as calls, messages and music directly from the interface. UK Car of the Year judge Anthony ffrenchConstant agreed, commenting: "The Volvo takes it for the quality

of its interior and infotainment." Fellow judge Ian Lynas praised the XC60 further, saying: "Amid a sea of crossovers, the new Volvo XC60 has emerged a winner with its build quality, high level of technology and, above all, sheer driving joy." Volvo's semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system is available across the XC60 range. This technologically advanced safety system takes the strain out of long car journeys by assisting the driver with braking, steering and accelerating, while keeping the car a safe distance from any vehicle in front. This system indicates Volvo's clear steps towards fully autonomous cars. The XC60 also features many ground-breaking safety systems, including Steer Assist which helps with the steering to avoid potential collisions, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation which will steer you back into your lane should you inadvertently begin to drift out of it. Both systems are new to the mid-size SUV segment and highlight Volvo's forward-thinking approach to safety.
