I’m James and I’m a Designer. I take work seriously and feel lucky to work in a profession that I love. I have a special interest in Editorial Design, after working for almost a year as a Designer at Inside Industry Magazine I really caught the magazine bug and I am eager to progress in my career and specialise in this area. I am currently Freelancing as an Editorial Designer and in-charge of Graphic Design at Jo Downs Handmade Glass but am looking for more permanent Editorial work. I am a keen cyclist and self-confessed car nut and have an unhealthy design blog and literature habit.

Employment History Waveney Fork Trucks, Lowestoft: Apprentice Plant Fitter July 2002 - August 2003 I went into this job straight from school. I decided after a year that I didn’t want to spend my life working as a mechanic so I decided to leave and go to college and study Graphic Design. Lowestoft Family Bowl, Lowestoft: Bar Person. December 2003 - March 2005 O’Reilly’s Bar: Duty Manager. December 2004 - August 2005 Jo Downs Glass Design, Launceston: Graphic Designer. September 2008 - September 2009 After university and my move to Cornwall, this was the first interview I had and I got the job. I was originally employed to run a small fused glass gallery in Padstow but it progressed into glass making and then, Graphic Design. As this was the first design job I had, it was a great opportunity to ease myself into life as a professional designer. I helped develop a new brand and identity for the company and produced mostly signage, posters and flyers. Proactive Publications (Inside Industry Magazine), Lowestoft: Graphic Designer. October 2009 - August 2010 I beat 50+ applicants to get this job and as the job was in a small seaside town with very few design jobs i was naturally rather pleased! The job required me to produce article layouts for a number of major companies including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Austrian Mint and ABB.This included liaising with the companies via e-mail and phone (tricky as some didn’t speak English!). This job was challenging as I had never worked in editorial design before and huge multinational companies are hard to please sometimes! I learned a great deal about this area of design from this job, as we were a small team I had to rely on my own judgement a lot and I was responisble for my own clients. I also had to learn most aspects of designing a magazine from planning to print. Jo Downs Glass Design, Launceston: Graphic Design Director August 2010 - Present I came back to Cornwall as I was offered this job when I was called out of the blue. I have since created a new website, produced packaging for both the company’s own galleries and their trade customers (including big accounts with World Duty Free, Eden Project National Trust and John Lewis) as well as doing a re-brand of packaging and point of sale material. Currently also Freelancing at JP Publishing, Bath as an Editorial Designer
