I think she was transferred just for me. Martin: Dream on. (Marina enters wearing a plain white shirt, no jewelry, and a pasted smile) Marina: (whispering) Yo susana, nice dress. Where did you get it? Susana: (whispering) Thanks. Joaquin bought it for me after school at the Raza mall. Marina: (whispering) I thought you went home. Susana: (whispering) I did, after the mall. You should have went. Marina: (yelling) what? Why didn’t you tell me? Teacher: Quiet down. Marina: Now that we are a couple, let’s change our wardrobe to have matching clothes, pencils cases, backpacks, and other stuff. I know you can pay for them because Martin told me you have $5,000 in savings. Tito: No way hozay. those are for college and the car I’m buying. Marina: But everyone else is doing it. Tito: I don’t care.
Marina: Fine but at least have a mini party where we just sit in the park and eat and read. I already called everyone last night and they agreed to it. We even created a shopping list and agreed that you are going to pay for them. Tito: AAARRRGGGHHH. (pulls his hair) (Marina hands Tito a tiny piece of paper. Tito grabs it and runs away) Marina: (yelling) remember , it is 4:00 Thursday! Scene 2 At the supermarket... ( Tito is standing behind a shopping cart full to the top with fresh produce looking at his shopping list.) Tito: Drinks, check. sandwiches, check. hamburgers, check. Go to John’s supermarket to pick up some...some what? I’ll just skip that one. Next, hot dog food. Why do we need dog food? Maybe she has a dog. I’ll just buy it. (Tito grabs the dog food and heads to the cashier) Cashier: That would be $50.00 please. Tito: What?!? That’s outrageous! Could I have a discount? Cashier: If you have a coupon, give it to me Tito: There are coupons!?! Where can I get them? Cashier: I see that you don’t have the coupons, so please pay. There is a whole line behind you. Tito: Fine I’ll pay. (At the party, the group sits in front of a fountain eating from a basket of food) Tito: You made me spend $50.00 on food for this so called party and you didn’t ask me before calling everybody. Marina: (pretending not to hear) Why is there dog food? We didn’t order that. Do you have a dog? Tito: No, I thought you have a dog.
Marina: (continueing) and what about the oranges and watermelons I ordered from John’s supermarket? Where are the hot dogs? Tito: What hot dog? What order? the list said to go to John’s supermarket to pick up some and then blank! Marina: Oh, it was supposed to be food but I ran out of room and so it put it on the next line. After hot dog. So that is why you bought dog food! Tito: If I followed you list all the way…(knees shaking) I could’ve spent $20.00 more. (frozen) Freddie: Yo homie. Where is the watermelon? Marina: (glaring at Tito) He forgot to pick them up. Freddie: Ok, then I should be going. I’ll see you at the next party! Tito: (unfreezing) What party? Marina: Oh, I forgot that you don’t know. Well, we scheduled another party and here is the new shopping list. Tito: At this rate, i’m never going to college! Marina: then get a job. It can’t be that hard. Tito: Easy for you to say. Besides, I don’t have the time. Freddie: The Chinese restaurant I am working at is in need of another dishwasher. Marina: C’mon, it will be fun. Remember, your college scholarship is on the line. Tito: Fine Scene 3 (After school, on the yard the next day, Tito glumly sits on the bench while Marina is staring at him) Marina: Well? Tito: (sigh) I made it. Marina: That’s great! Tito: That’s bad!
Marina: That’s great! Tito: That’s bad! Marina: So how much do you make? Tito: $90.00 a day. (Marina fiddles with a calculator) Marina: I calculated how much money we will have in a few years and we are short a few thousand. So you need to get a raise for both of us to get into college. Tito: What? I hate how you plan my whole life for me and I need to work hard to earn money while you party! It just isn’t fair. So…(sticks his finger in the air) I call a divorce or breakup or something like that. Marina: Ok I’ll see you at the coffee shop tomorrow. Tito: I’m not going. (Martin sees Marina leave and then walked to Tito) Martin: Why the frown, homie, you got a job? Tito: Marina broke up with me. I mean I broke up with her. Martin: Why? Does that mean that there are no more parties!?! You have to talk to her! Tito: Nope. Martin: Please, pretty please. Tito: Fine but you owe me. ( The next day at the coffee shop. Marina is sitting at an empty table staring out the window drinking coffee.) Tito: I’m sorry I yelled at you. ( Marina pretends not to hear.)
Tito: (continuing) But I want to live my life. I don’t want somebody to boss me around and take all your earnings just because they want to. Just think about what you might feel when you are in my shoes. Marina: (crying) I’m sorry, I didn’t know what it would be like to be you. I am always eager to use your earnings is because all my other friends have rich boyfriends and goes to gets invited and goes to parties everyday. When I became your girlfriend, I found out you weren’t rich and I like you so I wanted to pretend and show my friends that you are rich. But now I know that being rich doesn’t matter but the person matters. Will you forgive me? Martin: Does that mean that there are no more parties? Marina: If you want a party then you will have to host and pay for it. Martin: Ok.
